Dog Attacked by Gator May Be Euthanized

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. - Authorities say a dog that bit an animal control worker after it was attacked by an alligator may have to be euthanized.

Witness accounts paint a frightening picture. Three dogs, one presumed to be the mother, all believed to be strays, were walking near a Delray Beach, Florida lake.

The pups were standing near the water as their mom swam out. Passersby say the swimming dog turned around to head back to shore, but was soon after pulled under.

Residents living in the area say an 8-foot alligator that frequents the shore is to blame. A search took place, but was unsuccessful. The animal is now presumed dead.

One of the puppies ran away after the attack, but the third was caught. Animal service workers say the dog suffered an alligator bite and was in shock when they found it.

But the dog later bit an animal control worker that was called to the scene. Authorities are now saying it may have to be put down. They also say that since the dog doesn't have a collar or microchip, it is probably a stray, and may not have had a rabies vaccination.

The dog is estimated to be about four-months-old and some mix of hound.

Hopefully the dog is rabies free and can be saved. Hopefully the officer understands that shock could have been the reasoning behind the bite.

what a very sad story.I hope that it is not rabied and that it doesn't have to be put down.I also hope the animal control person is well and doesn't have to go through all those shots,I heard they are very painful

How could they even think about doing that to the dog,it is like this strange man coming over to you and a human did not ever touch you if I were the dog I would have bit him.We had a stray dog but she was the sweetest dog you could meet.I say they give the dog raby shots.

JUST BECAUSE IT IS A STRAY DOESN'T MEAN IT SHOULD NOT BE QUARANTINED FOR THE GESTATION TIME OF RABIES AND THEN GIVEN A CHANCE TO BE ADOPTED, NOT DESTROYED.

An injured dog WILL bite someone out of fear and pain. The dog shoudl NOT be put down just for this reason. It should be given a chance.

Excuse me but don't you think the dog was scared and just struck out. Give it a chance for christ sake. What you do if you were attacked. I've seen women attack officers after they had been attacked. Not realizing they were officers.

Hey!! we are talking about a 4 month old puppy for gosh sakes. I am hoping they can treat the poor little puppy and not euthanize it. I doubt very seriously that the puppy has rabies. It was scared when bitten by the alligator, of course he was scared. Why not treat his injuries and watch him. I don't think the bite of the animal control officer could have been to bad.

I hope this puppy is being euthanized due to the extent of it's injuries & not because it bit animal control. I would be a little cranky if I were being chased by a human after being bit by an alligator & watched by mom being drowned & eaten by an alligator. If it is medically treated & held to see what it's temperment is after adjusting from the trauma & it is still aggressive I can understand euthanasia.

I agree with that. Of course the puppy was scared to death after seeing what happened to his mother and was hurt. How much damage can a 4 month old puppy do.

THise poor pups, loosing their mother then they were probably frightened by the people trying to catch them, they were just defending themseves. I hope they didn't have to put the pup down. It probably just needed to be handled and gotten use to people

I just don't get this! Of course a dog who just survived an alligator attack, lost its mother and is in shock is going to bite! Gee - I might bite too if I had been through all that. Give the puppy a break!

Test the dog and then make the next decision. Rabies is scary and can be fatal.

Test the dog for rabies. That is what you have to do! Next if the dog was rabid, then the guy has to take shots, lots of them. If the dog wasn't rabid, well, it was just a frightened pup that bit the man because it was scared and it was killed in vain.

rabies is almost always fatal in humans and animals. the safest thing to do is to test the dog. It's tragic, but it is the reality of this deadly virus. the treatment for rabies exposure is both painful and expensive; no one should go through that unless they have been exposed to the rabies virus itself.

I hate to see this happen. First of all, no wonder the dog bit the animal control officer - it was scared and in shock. Shouldn't some precaution have been taken to prevent being bitten. Can they observe the puppy's behavior for a while - I just hate to see this dog's life end so soon.

Why don't they just hold the dog the required number of days to see if rabies develops? Why put it down. It had just been attacked by an alligator. What did the animal control officer expect?

I see no reason why the dog must be euthanized. Animal Control should search for the remaining puppy and both should be placed for adoption. According to reports they are approximately 4 months of age. Poor mother dog.

Get rid of the alligator! After being attacked like that, i am sure the dog was traumatized! If they know there is an alligator there, the next thing it eats will be a human. Don't punish the dog for being scared. Dang! I might bite someone too if i was just almost eaten by a reptile!

If the dog gets put down, then I would think it only fair that they hunt the alligtor down and kill it as well...since that was the root of the problem. The dog was probably in shock and it's instinct was to protect itself.

what has been done about the gator? sounds like a dangerous situation for people as well as animals...extenuating circumstances should have given the injured pup another chance, not a death sentence.

I'm sure the dog was frightened and may have reacted that way because of the situation at the time. It should be given a though evaluation before a final decision is made.

I think the dog should be given another chance to prove that it's not a danger. You can't use the worst day of that pups life to judge it's character.

This is human error, not the dogs fault. We all know to take precautions when handling injured animals, even our own as they may bite due to fear or pain. If the animal control officer was bitten they made an error in judgement. Why put down the pup? Treatment is not the same shot in the stomache painful treatment it used to be although it still is a series of treatments.
