Dissection, Positive Use for Euthanized Pets?

According to the HSUS, over six million cats and other small animals are euthanized annually in the U.S. Roughly the same number are dissected each year in high school classrooms.

Many euthanized animals end up on America's dissection tables. But we wanted to know – does dissection help to lessen the impact of euthanasia?

A study by the Student's Animal Guardian Alliance (SAGA) suggests it does not. That's because it found that 86 percent of American students want the option to use alternative methods of learning anatomy.

The study, which is part of an HSUS and Animal Welfare Trust collaborative, showed that 36 percent of teens aged 11-18 have ethical issues with studying dead animals.

Dissection in th U.S. is a multi-million dollar business. According to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) website, the animals used can come from slaughter houses, shelters, animal dealers and thieves.

The SAGA study found that 52 percent of students claim they'd prefer an alternative to using animals.

Those alternatives, the report says, could be better, because they're more cost effective and don't require loss of life. For example, there's software manufacturer Cyber Ed®'s “Dissection Series.”

With the loss of so many unwanted animals, dissection might be the best way to give some meaning to their deaths. Do you agree? Tell us what you think – post comments below this story. Submit video responses on the zootooTV tab. You can email us at news@zootoo.com or call us at 877-777-4204.

If this terriable thing has to happen becasue shelters are over croweded, then what a beautiful thing can come out of it. My cat was very sick, and my vet saved him I think itsbecasue they were able to use euthed cats to help learn about sickness.

It's too bad they have to euthanize any of the animals, but if they do I think this is good use. Let their lives means something even if it's in death.

I didn't care for cutting up frogs but if I were going to a doctor I would like to think he's seen the real thing rather than "saw it on TV once".

It has it's place but I truely think that the animals should not be raised for this purpose.

Dissection when I was in high school was just frogs and fetal pigs. If there had been a cat or dog I could not have done it. Alternative methods that are now available would be much more humane. Perhaps for vet students this is needed and if so using an animal that was killed anyway would be better, but could we not set it up so that people could donate their animals(after they die of natural causes) to science? Also I have heard of students learning surgery by using live animals and putting them to sleep rather than bringing them out from under. I think this should stop if it is really happening.

I agree with this for vet school but NOT for high school students. I was once in high school and I know what dissection in Biology class was like-it was a zoo-and it was not taken serious. Thumbs down on this!

I would definitely rather the animals used in teaching be animals that were euthanized from shelters, etc than have them be produced and then euthanized specifically for teaching purposes.

I find it highly offensive that young people being made to carve up dead animals would give these animals' deaths "meaning". These poor animals deserved to be on this planet as much as the ones in loving homes. That they died without ever knowing a loving home doesn't make their deaths meaningless, it makes their deaths tragic. What's "meaningful" about being carved up??? It's not like they had any choice in the matter. The Cyber Ed software should be used instead.

Asking an average teen where they stand on ethical grounds is like asking a pair of two year olds who deserves the one cookie... While I believe students should have a choice in the matter, providing that they are not going into a field that requires biology, I think that this is a good thing to have regardless. A computer program can only teach you so much. It's much better than getting animals from 'animal farms' where they are raised solely for this purpose.

I agree. I have a Biology degree and used to do field research for the state health department. I would not have chosen to go into this field based off a computer program. The turning moment was when I saw the individual blood cells pulsing through the veins under the microscope and realized how miraculous life is to the submicroscopic level. I never got that feeling even from the "films" of this. The dissection of the real thing is also more valuable than plastic simulations. I always valued life above anything else and don't feel that animals should be raised for this purpose but see nothing wrong in utilizing those who have sacrificed their lives already due to human indifference.

If the subject of study is in pursuit of a veterinary career, I say absolutely dissection is a positive use. For middle and highschool? I don't remember getting anything from it and we dissected quite a few animals (worm, frog, starfish, locust, fish, small shark). There was another class where cats were dissected. I was always very disturbed by it.

If they are doing some sort of scientif research, then I think that is ok, but as far as Jr. High and High diection goes, I don't think it is necessary. I remember disecting a frog and a squid in jr. high--but I don't recall that I "learned" anything from it.

I do agree. This is why many people want to "give their body to science" after death. It would made using them for dissection more acceptable, I think. I am a nurse. In hisgh school we used a rat-that was OK with me. In college we had a cat. Not so good. I still would have been very sad, but knowing that the animal had not dies "in vain" might have helped. It is still much harder to dissect a pet-type animal then a rat (not a pet for the majority of folks.)

frog dissection was part of the curriculum in my middle school. fortunately, we were in groups, so not everyone had to work with the frog. i didn't see the point in why we needed to cut open the frog when there are MANY other ways we could learn about it

I remember the day my 8th grade class dissected pigs, I didn't do it, I couldn't. I don't really understand what you learn from this unless you are going into the animal medical field. Kids don't like to cut up fee-fee or fido... Find other ways to teach them about the insides of animals... if they really need it.

I refused to take biology lab classes in college because they dissected pregnant cats. There is no real educational value in slicing up a cat. To me, it is a moral issue. Dissecting animals would be a convenient excuse for allowing over population. This practice is unacceptable.

Can you imagine a family taking a terminally ill cat to a shelter to be euthanized then one of the kids sees the cat in a biology class. STOP TREATING ANIMALS AS IF THEY ARE INANIMATE OBJECTS.

I am sooooooooooo not in the favor of this....I remember in hight school when we had some animal to disect and I was just totally grossed out by it. I did not want to touch it. As an educator in todays society some kids may take it as an opportunity to think well if I do see a dead cat on the side of the road I will disect it..you just never know about how they think sometimes.

What a nice thought...give meaning to the euthanized animals' deaths. Or give someone an excuse to euthanize animals.

I think with as fa4ras technology has come, isn't there a better way to teach teenagers anatomy? Save dissection for responsible adults going into a medical profession.

I find that dissection in high school is totally unnecessary. I certainly didn't learn anything from it and was totally freaked out by having to cut up a cat. Reserve this for college when someone is specializing in a field which makes it necessary.

I think for adult medical training you need the real thing and this would be so much better then killing just for dissection, but do kids need the real thing, i think kids can do just as well with programs or plastic models as they are getting the basic idea not training for a medical treatment.

I personally have no problem with them using euthanized animals for dissection and study purposes.

At least their death has served to help future animals. As long as the animals were not put down just to be dissected.

In the past, our shelter donated some of the cats we put down for vet students to learn to do dentals. Those cats were put down because they were feline Leuk + and we had no where for felines with that disease. So at least their death will help future animals.

This did make the shelter staff feel a little better about putting the animals down.

Now if we can very get to the point of not putting down unwanted animals, then we might have to look at a different approach to dissecting.

this is a little different than having young people in high school disecting them..the vets were learning something pertaining to their trade and they should have access to euthanized animals for their vocation but for most people it is an impractical thing to learn

I have mixed feelings on this one.I saw films, books digital images, etc., for RVT training, but until I saw the real anatomy of an animal did I get the true understanding of everything.I do not approve of an animal being killed for this reason,we were told that the animals in our class where animals from pounds or animals that die at vet clinics due to disease..,I hope all that was true.

I have a low opinion of opinion polls anyway. But asking teens about ethics is especially useless - until someone is out in the world with experience balancing hard choices on their own, you're really just asking them about ideals that they got from parents, peer groups, and slanted educational material. That said, I'd make dissection optional for all students. Until tools are better, it's probably the best way to teach anatomy for some purposes. Especially if you're training to cut open animals or people for a living. But most students aren't working toward those goals.

I don't think this is a real good idea. It just makes it easier to justify the euthanasia of unwanted animals, when our efforts should be going toward finding a solution for the pet overpopulation problem.
