Delta Imposes Higher Fees on Animal Travelers

NEW YORK – To combat the record cost of fuel, the airline industry has been upping the ante for travelers -- and that includes jet-setting animal companions.

Delta Air Lines, as a prelude to its merger with Northwest Airlines, implemented several new luggage fees, including a jump from $75 to $100 for carrying a pet in the cabin.

A Delta representative told Pet Pulse, the April 1 fee change makes Delta’s fee structure more competitive with those of other airlines.

While Delta did not reveal how much revenue it could gain from the fee increase -- the first since September 2007 – it came as a result of previous attempts failing to counter rising costs.

“(Raising fares) have not been successful because there’s also a need for Delta to be competitive,” said Betsy Talton, a spokeswoman for Delta Air Lines Inc., in an interview with The Associated Press.

When pets travel with the airline, owners have a couple options generally available for flight accommodations – either as carry-on or checked baggage. However, choice of pet air travel accomodations is contingent upon weather, temperatures and breed as noted in Delta’s Summer Restrictions policy, which is in effect May 15 to September 15.

According to Delta, in 2007 more than 55,000 pets took advantage of traveling in the cabin on the floorboards in front of their owners – a recently added option -- while more than 64,000 flew as checked baggage.

That’s just a drop in the bucket when compared to the roughly two million pets which fly commercially each year, as estimated by the Department of Transportation.

But Delta could see an increase of furry travelers in the wake of its April 14 announcement -- the long-speculated acquisition of Northwest Airlines. At the cost of about $3.1 billion, the deal creates the world’s largest airline, which could trigger a series of copy cat buyouts to reshape the U.S. airlines industry.

For now it’s just expert forecasting, but in other airline news, Northwest Airlines revealed on Monday its new online feature which now allows customers traveling with carry-on pets to book flights at its Web site. This reservation feature applies to certain domestic dogs, cats or household birds traveling in a kennel for an $80 one-way fare.

This seems fair to me, $25 is really not all that much. You still have the option of sending the pet as cargo

I'd prefer buying a seat for my cat if we had to fly. She would definitely fly in the cabin and not with luggage. I'd have the vet knock her out for the trip too so she wouldn't stroke out from nerves or cry the whole time. I just hope I never need to consider flying with my pets.

Just drive, have fun at rest stops ROAD TRIPPPPPP!!!!!!

I think I would be more likly to travel and pay a higher ticket if pets flew free. Charge a deposit for possible messes. I personally would buy a seat if they would letme take my pet with me. Wait I have9 dogs... Maybe I should chater a plane. :o)

Seriously gouging pet lovers will only hurt the airline in the future!

I don't think that $25 is very much to charge for pets to fly in the cabin with people, although I think its not cool that they are trying to make up for gas money by gouging the pet travelers. -I never thought the recent pet traveler laws were fair anyway, because recently I heard that you were not allowed to travel with your pets unless you have a doctor's note.

I agree! with you!

I can understand the extra fee if the animal is taking space that a person could be paying for. But I think it is more about grabbing as much money as possible while the cost of fuel can be used as an excuse.

I think its great the pets can ride in the cabin and if my pets travelled with me thats where they would be, I couldn't ever send them to the cargo hold, its to dangerous and having them with, makes it easier on them it would be worth the cost.
Face it, EVERYTHING costs MORE these days, its an aweful truth.

I hate sending my lugage I cant imagine sending my dog!

Again, I would have to ask, 'why the extra charge.' They don't cost the airline any more money than if you were to take on a carry-on of the same size and weight. Just a way to make money.

That's exactly it, don't you think? It is a way to make money. Which airline *hasn't* filed bankruptcy in the last ten years? The airlines are in trouble; it IS a way to make money. Perhaps they are taking cues from the banking industry which is very creative with fees, charges, annual renewals, hidden costs, etc. Really, does it cost the banks $4 for one ATM transaction? Why does it cost anything to refinance your mortgage to a lower interest rate? Or maybe they're taking cues from the health care industry. Let's see, one bandaid costs $12 in a hospital. For heaven's sake, take that cheap box of kleenex with you because it's cost you through the nose (pun intended). Or maybe they're listening to the clever contractors and suppliers to the U.S. military. Wow, they really know how to make easy money! Some vets could give excellent financial tips. My cat experienced struvite crystals recently. Just to see that he hadn't escaped cost $54 for two one-minute checks PER day. When all was said and done, I spent close to $850. I couldn't afford the follow-up appointment since the first appointment that included an urine analysis cost $211. I could have easily reached that $1,000 mark. In fact, they were going to run even more tests, but when I asked if those tests were necessary, the vet admitted that they weren't. Talk about padding the bill. Finally, if you have ever had a loved one die, you know how ruthless the funeral industry can be. I paid $2,000 for an urn for my daughter's ashes. It took me six months to even open up the box that contained the urn. When I did, I found a tin can resembling a Folgers coffee can! Now that is taking advantage of people at their most desperate, vulnerable time. Comparably, the airline industry doesn't sound SO bad, do they? They're certainly not doing as well as British Petroleum or Shell.

I realize gas has gone up but does it really take more gas to fly a animal instead of a suitcase?? If I choose to take my dog with me and leave the extra bag of clothes behind that should be my choice!!

I mean we are all affected by rising fuel prices. I know a friend of mine couldnt go with her husband to AZ to see his mom who had just had a heartattack because it was too expensive to take their 3 cats and chinchilla. And the cost of boarding them was even worse.

Well I am glad that Delta allows pets to travel int he cabin - a lot of carriers do not. And I don't care how much I would have to pay - my pet would never fly as luggage. It is dangerous and I could tell you many. mnay stories of escapes since I know someone who has worked at the major airlines for 30 plus years.

And no matter what - airline fares will go up with oil going up. And now since the merger and the fact that Delta has the most lavishly paid pilots in the WORLD - that cost has to be passed on to the customers too.

I say Fly Jet Blue! : - ) (Not sure what there policy on pets is - never flew with my pets)

Ridiculous, stupid fee! We were in Florida last week and I wanted to bring back a snail from a pet store to put in my marine fish tank at home. Upon checking with Delta, I found that they would tack that $100 "pet fee" for carrying my $2.99 snail on board!! Needless to say, the snail went back to the store.

I have never agreed with the added fee for a pet....if one wants to carry on a piece of luggage, a lap top or a child in your lap - there is no added fee.....but a pet that is placed in the same place you would put your carry on laptop carries a fee when your laptop doesn't......sounds like they have the traveler over a barrel!

Its already hard enough to travel with pets. My pets' plane tickets were more expensive than my own! I wish someone would make it easier and less pricey. Its not like you can drive 1500 miles with your pet in the back seat and all of your belongings... The airlines take such advantage of people who have no alternatives.

The airlines are shakier than we know. I guess fees can be tacked into everything to combat that. Hopefully, their treatment of flying animals will improve too. I guess they will be forced to stay on a parked plane for 12 hours like human passengers are. Equality can suck!

As with most corporations the airlines have to squeeze every nickel they can out of everyone who flies, including the animals. The officers of the company have such inflated salaries and perks that they have to have a solution for that.
The employees have taken pay cuts but that does not seem to apply to the officers who make the most money!
After 911 the CEO of Delta was praised for giving a quarter's salary back - it was in excess of 4 mil and that was for 3 monts. I could live happily on 16 mil for one year's work. And then I would have all my perks also!

Honestly, why??? Other than for the airline to make more money, if you choose to use a kennel (particularly if it is the size of a personal bag as denoted by the airline) as one of your carry-ons, why should you be charged an additional fee? If there are not special and costly procedures/accomodations made to take a pet, why are they charging these high fees? If my animal was going to travel and I took them in lieu of one of my bags, fees should not be an issue.

My son is moving from Az. to Mi, he has two dogs and a cat. The dogs will be driving with him, which will take 3 days. I will be flying down and bringing the cat back on the plane with me. They gave me a price of $80.00 and he has to be less than 15 pounds and in a soft carrier. There are temp restrictions (to hot) for the cargo area and won't be lifted until Oct. Three days in a u-haul truck or 3 1/2 hrs. on the plane. We'll take the plane.

it greatly upsets me to hear that animals have to shipped by cargo, especially over long distance. when i travel with my cats only 3 hours away by car they will not eat or drink, which is fine b/c it's such a short distance. they are too freaked out to eat or drink, let alone a breeder animal that is shipped in a cargo hold with many other animals freaking out. i'm not sure where i stand on this as i do not have a large dog that i need to travel by air with. i don't have a solution for that one.

I can see both sides of this. On one hand, you are paying for the convenience of keeping your pet with you. On the other hand, it's taking up the space of your leg room/carry-on bag, and you aren't charged for that, are you?

I know many breeders will ship their puppies/kittens via airline to buyers, and those are virtually all sent via cargo (in the belly of the plane with luggage). Imagine how many of these animals are shipped annually, versus how many are traveling with their people in the cabin. I think that if the airlines are looking to make extra money, they should be charging the cargo-shippers more, not the dedicated pet lovers who travel with their pets. When I say this, I mean that people who are flying with their pets in cargo (due to size restrictions) should not be charged extra for using the cargo, as the airline requires them to do so - only those who ship animals unattended.

My only other complaint (as alluded to above) is that the restrictions make it impossible for any pet to travel in the cabin with their owners if they don't fit into a tiny cage that can be crammed under a seat. Great for people who own 5-pound dogs; not so great for people who want to bring their cocker spaniel, lab, or great dane along for a trip. Also, if you have an overly large cat, it may not fit under the seat.

A few years ago I had an adopter come on airplane to pick up one of my rescue dogs (an Italian greyhound). She brought a soft kennel and took her new baby home in the cabin with her. We both agreed that it wouldn't happen any other way. :)

I agree that I would never travel with a pet placed in cargo. I don't think it's any surprise that any airline would take advantage of every chance they get to raise prices, especially with the mess the U.S. is in with gas prices. (Thanks to GW!) But I can't see why they would charge: 1) if it's "my" leg room, and 2) if I have no other carry on luggage, which they allow to a certain limit, without charging.

air prices are rising while their customer service is sinking and there is no food unless you buy it.... meanwhile they are charging us to lose our footroom because we want our pet with us... I wouldn't trust them with my pet in cargo... how many pets died this year because of airline negligence or accidents?

It's always about screwing the customer out of more money with these money hungry Airlines, I mean really, if your Pet is under the seat in front of you, why so much money? It's getting cheaper to drive and take the furry babies with you.

If your pet is going as your carry-on then there should be no fee at all, same if your child travels in your lap. No way would I every put my furkids in with the luggage. Airlines might find more customers if they actually catered to fliers with pets.

I never knew it was an option to carry on a pet w/ you. I thought they all had to be put w/ luggage. I always felt it would be horrible to be in the belly of the plane by themselves in really cold or hot temps so I never took an animal anywhere. Still don't think there is need for me to. Some people who need to though have the carry on & have them @ your feet option. That is awesome to have your pet right there w/ you! I am not suprised by the price going up. Everything is going up now days. Its a bad time for alot of business & families. Gas prices affect everyone. Sad but its true. If the airline has to raise their price to stay in business then that's what they have to do. I wouldn't want to have it get where American's aren't able to fly because our airlines are shut down due to high gas charges!

We have seen so much change in the airline industry since 9/11. As I do not agree with the surcharge for having your pet in the cabin at your feet, I can understand, with the rising fuel costs (which we are all effected by) that any business would jump on the band wagon and use whatever means they can to raise their revenue. Personally, I would never have my pet travel in the cargo or baggage area. If I was to travel with my pet, yes I would pay the extra money to have him with me. And, do not think that the airlines does not know, that anyone who travels with a pet, will feel the same way.

I'm just glad we CAN bring our small pets with us on board. Sure we can b*!# about the price, and sure, it is pretty ridiculous - most of us do not have money like that to spare. But I look at it this way: if bringing pets into the cabin with us was not an option (regardless of if there is a fee) I would never consider checking them in as baggage. And THAT would be sad.

The airlines are out of control charging these crazy fees/prices. They are making a very large profit on these kind of charges. It use to be you would get a very small bag of prezels but you don't even get that. Yet they charge (ONE WAY) $80. or more for what? They don't give you any better service for your pet, no extra accomidations. That pet is considered a carry one and that's it. They get away with it because all of us with pets would pay any price to have our pets with us. How dare any airlines put a price on our love for our babies, just so they can make an extra buck! And I have never flown my big dogs in the cargo, because I can only imagine how horrible that is. I agree with those that say don't do it, don't put your pets in the cargo, if you can't carry on, then just leave them with someone you trust.

Another price going up. It seems to me that the cost of flying is already high enough but I guess it is to be expected.
