Czech Scientists: New Vaccine for Lyme's Disease in Dogs

Browse News

OSTRAVA, Czech Republic – Researchers working at the Czech company Bioveta have made a breakthrough that's likely to positively affect thousands of dogs who suffer from Lyme's disease.

Lyme's disease is transmitted by deer ticks; small cousins of the spider. The blood-born bacteria they carry can have a number of effects or show no signs at all. They include flu-like symptoms, joint damage, heart complications and kidney problems. On some occasions, kidney issues can lead to death.

Statistics on the number of dogs infected each year were unavailable at the time of this article, but the CDC reports that in 2006, 20,000 Americans were infected. It's estimated that only 5-10 percent of dogs found with deer ticks will develop the clinical form of Lyme's disease, but they can still carry it and show milder symptoms like fever, loss of appetite and lethargy. The vaccine in development by Bioveta is in the testing phase and should be on the market within a year.

Deer ticks can be found in heavily wooded areas and grasslands. They're roughly the size of a pinhead, and can easily bury themselves deep within a dog's fur. A telltale “bulls-eye” rash forms around the area of the bite after the tick has had time to attach itself to the skin.

Removing ticks is tricky. They burrow their heads into the skin, and if the body is tugged off the head can be left under the skin, causing infection. It is recommended that the tick be pulled off with a fine-tipped forceps. Do not try to burn, smother in Vaseline or squash the tick.

I f*cking hate ticks more than anything else on this planet. *SHUDDER* I am glad that there may be a cure for lyme disease now. I actually knew of a gentlemand that suffured from it for many years and it went undiagnosed until right before his death.

I know other areas have a bigger problem with Lyme disease but in my county we really don't. Glad something is being done for those that have a bigger problem with it.

I hope that they get this off to a good start and wonder how long it will take for it to reach the United States. If I don't keep my frontline on my dogs they have come in the house with ticks on them.

There already is a vaccine to prevent Lyme in the US. This vaccine here they are talking about is to help cure it should the dog get it.

Talk to your vet about getting the Lyme Prevention vaccine.

Very interesting article. I did not know ticks were related to spiders...my dogs are having allergies to something...I suspected spieders. I know ticks give them hot spots but we don't have ticks when it gets cold. Now, spiders on the other hand...Good luck to the Czech scientists...

We learned in school that Revolution is not very good for ticks. It is only labled against one tick-the American Dog Tick (Dermacenter variables) which transmitt Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. When you buy Revolution you can ask for a tick collar that the company is suppose to provide for free.

This is one of the best things I have heard. A vaccine for Lyme's disease. I hope it pans out. Maybe can be applied to humans and other animals. Would be one less disease we would have to worry about.

I don't understand this story. There already is a vaccine for Lyme disease on the market for dogs. It's been out for years. I wonder if this is for a different strain or something. I worked at an animal hospital for the last 7 years, and we had been using the LymeVax vaccine the whole time. We always recommended it for people traveling up north and to wooded or mountainous areas where ticks are most prevalent.

I think this is what is confusing people here. Unfortuantely is sounds like many people are unaware that a current preventative vaccine is avialble - mayber that should be the follow up news story.

I agree. This prevetative isn't needed in all areas of the country, but anyone who is interested or wants more information should talk to their vet tech or vet.

This article is confusing. You say the vaccine would treat dogs already infected with Lymes. That is not the purpose of a vaccine, it is to prevent the disease. There is already a vaccine for prevention, which I have given to my dogs since we live in a tick-laden rural area. Once a dog has Lymes, it can be treated with a regimen of antibiotics. Sounds like Zootoo is just regurgitating a press release from the manufacturer of this new product.

Interesting point. Perhaps the term vaccine was what was misleading. i am reading it with the hope that it is a treatment for the disease once the animal has it. I too have had my dogs vaccinated against this disease.
