Czech Scientists: New Vaccine for Lyme's Disease in Dogs

Browse News

OSTRAVA, Czech Republic – Researchers working at the Czech company Bioveta have made a breakthrough that's likely to positively affect thousands of dogs who suffer from Lyme's disease.

Lyme's disease is transmitted by deer ticks; small cousins of the spider. The blood-born bacteria they carry can have a number of effects or show no signs at all. They include flu-like symptoms, joint damage, heart complications and kidney problems. On some occasions, kidney issues can lead to death.

Statistics on the number of dogs infected each year were unavailable at the time of this article, but the CDC reports that in 2006, 20,000 Americans were infected. It's estimated that only 5-10 percent of dogs found with deer ticks will develop the clinical form of Lyme's disease, but they can still carry it and show milder symptoms like fever, loss of appetite and lethargy. The vaccine in development by Bioveta is in the testing phase and should be on the market within a year.

Deer ticks can be found in heavily wooded areas and grasslands. They're roughly the size of a pinhead, and can easily bury themselves deep within a dog's fur. A telltale “bulls-eye” rash forms around the area of the bite after the tick has had time to attach itself to the skin.

Removing ticks is tricky. They burrow their heads into the skin, and if the body is tugged off the head can be left under the skin, causing infection. It is recommended that the tick be pulled off with a fine-tipped forceps. Do not try to burn, smother in Vaseline or squash the tick.

This is huge for Wisconsin where deer ticks are everywhere and hunting is very popular. We are always on the lookout for them.

Hopefully the tests will show it to be beneficial and it will be given to all the animals that need it.

I hope this all works out. A Lyme vaccine for humans would also be good - since so many people fall ill to this terrible disease as well.

Try the Tick Twister for removal. We use these in the Veterinary Clinic and they are great. Also, consider using Advantix to repel ticks and keep them from attaching. This will keep the dog from getting ALL tick borne illnesses, not just protection from Lyme disease.

So let's channel that information towards the two-legged species now! Glad to hear there's been progress towards this disease in animals though!

I've seen a couple of dogs at my vet's that contracted Lymes disease. It was so horrible that I do what it takes to make sure it doesn't happen to my crew.

I think I will stick to Frontline for now. I have to use it anyway for fleas and I am a big believer in less medication is better. It will be good for dogs whose owners don't use Frontline. And it would be nice if they adapted it for humans.

Glad to hear that the vaccine will be available soon. Now all they have to do is get owners to want to vaccinate their dogs. Heck, most of the dogs that come into the shelter aren't vaccinated anyways.

Ticks carrying lyme discease have been a problem for at least 20 years (if my memory serves me right). I am very glad to hear that a postive step has been made.

Informative, interesting and a wonderful medical discovery to help combat limes disease.
If people don't know how to properly remove a tick they should take their pet to a veterinarian rather than risk more damage or infection.
