Czech Scientists: New Vaccine for Lyme's Disease in Dogs

Browse News

OSTRAVA, Czech Republic – Researchers working at the Czech company Bioveta have made a breakthrough that's likely to positively affect thousands of dogs who suffer from Lyme's disease.

Lyme's disease is transmitted by deer ticks; small cousins of the spider. The blood-born bacteria they carry can have a number of effects or show no signs at all. They include flu-like symptoms, joint damage, heart complications and kidney problems. On some occasions, kidney issues can lead to death.

Statistics on the number of dogs infected each year were unavailable at the time of this article, but the CDC reports that in 2006, 20,000 Americans were infected. It's estimated that only 5-10 percent of dogs found with deer ticks will develop the clinical form of Lyme's disease, but they can still carry it and show milder symptoms like fever, loss of appetite and lethargy. The vaccine in development by Bioveta is in the testing phase and should be on the market within a year.

Deer ticks can be found in heavily wooded areas and grasslands. They're roughly the size of a pinhead, and can easily bury themselves deep within a dog's fur. A telltale “bulls-eye” rash forms around the area of the bite after the tick has had time to attach itself to the skin.

Removing ticks is tricky. They burrow their heads into the skin, and if the body is tugged off the head can be left under the skin, causing infection. It is recommended that the tick be pulled off with a fine-tipped forceps. Do not try to burn, smother in Vaseline or squash the tick.

What a wonderful breakthrough if something comes of this. In the woods that I enjoy hiking with my dog in, there are deer ticks everywhere.

This is good news. We see a lot of this in the northern parts of the midwest and it's a real problem for animals and people alike.

We don't have a problem with ticks where Mochi is concerned, but I do hope this can help a lot of dogs when it finally comes out.

Maybe this vaccine will be better than the one currently on the market. I know too many dogs that have gotten Lymes disease even though that were vaccinated. Worse yet, I know too many dogs that have had bad reaction to the one currently on the market and died from the vaccine itself.

Huh? Okay...my dogs are all vaccinated for Lyme already, been something for that for a few years, now is this one new to what we are getting already? For dogs that already suffer with having it, to avoid getting it....did I not read the article well enough or is there really not a whole lot of information in it.

Ok - I'm thinking they are talking about treating dogs who are infected, I thought dogs were already put on a series of medications for that and...still confused, wish there was more information on the vaccine in this article. (having a conversation with self here.)

I was confused about this at first as well. But after reading it over a couple of times I think this vaccination may be aimed not so much at preventing it, but curing (at least the symptoms) of dogs that have already contracted it.

I live in an area that we have to always think about ticks. It is very bothersome. My grandfather actually contracted this lyme disease. He is okay from that though. I hope that this is all good with the vaccine for the dogs.

We do too around our house, and also do a lot of camping and hiking, we get the Lyme preventative shots already, so hopefully we won't need something to cure Lyme. We also get testing each year for the diseases that ticks (more than Lyme) can transmit to our hounds.

What great news. However it should not stop us from applying preventatives to keep the ticks off our dogs. A cure is not a reason to relax. This is still a very dangerous situation for our pets and for that matter for ourselves.

This would be great for dogs with Lyme disease (which is common in our area) and may even lead to a breakthrough in treatment for humans. (Unfortuantely Lyme is also common in people in this area and can be very difficult to treat.)

Yuck! I hate ticks. I'm sure most of us do. They freak me out. I just my dogs everynight for these little blood suckers. My husband heats the tweezers and then removes the ticks. We heard that that makes them remove their bite. I hope this is the right thing to do.
