Cuddly Knut Turns into 'Animal Psychopath'

Browse News

BERLIN –- Having turned into an international darling, Knut -- the polar bear cub abandoned by his mother –has started showing the world a less endearing side.

Knut is seemingly self-obsessed and addicted to public attention, said one of his keepers at the Berlin Zoo.

Born December 2006, he has become a major attraction at the zoo, pulling in millions of dollars so far. But it has come at a cost.

His keeper, Markus Roebke, warns that Knut’s mental health is deteriorating.

“Knut must go and the sooner the better,” said Roebke, who believes the bear should be sent to an animal park where he would receive less attention.

“He actually is addicted to the whole show, the human adulation -– It is not healthy,” said Roebke who has watched the bear cry out and whimper if there is not a spectator outside his enclosure “ready to ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ at him.”

When black ice shut down the zoo recently, “he howled until staff members stood before him and calmed him down.”

The trouble stems from Knut identifying himself as a human, and not as a polar bear, Roebke added.

“And as long as he is with us, he will always think of Thomas Doerflein, the keeper who brought him up when he was a baby, as his father,” Roebke said. “Knut needs publicity and that must change.”

When Knut’s mother abandoned him after his birth – an act of natural selection seen in the wild –- the zoo came under fire for the decision to raise the polar cub.

Animal activists protested the decision, saying it would be better for the cub to die than to be weaned by man.

Now, the larger Knut grows so does the base of his admirers and it’s increasingly evident the toll it’s taking on the polar bear.

In January, Knut’s sanity was also questioned by a prominent animal conservationist who branded him “an animal psychopath.”

In the wake of his maturity and growing ails, Knut’s keepers are no longer “allowed to have contact with him and have received letters that if we breach this order our jobs are on the line,” said Roebke.

“He is too unpredictable to play with now,” he added.

The poor bear. Maybe he needs another companion. It seems cruel to not allow his keepers any contact with him, without replacing that interaction with something else.
I also wonder if the cub's mother abandoned him, because she sensed there was something wrong with him right from the start.

The poor thing. His human keepers created this (although meaning well) and now what will happen to him. I hate to think of him being so lonely without people.

I worried about this poor bear when the media started their frenzy. All those cameras and faces looking at you every day are sure to cause some mental issues. I hope this guy can get some help and possibly find a nice mate.

Poor Knut. He got use to always having company and just didn't want to be alone. I hope they got him a companion bear. Hopefully he is doing okay now.

I don't know that I agree with the comment that it's better for a cub to die than be weaned by man. If we don't help keep them alive they, too, will become extinct.

Good intentions gone awry. It's a pretty bizarre situation for a wild animal to be in.

A case of the road to hell, for the bear, being paved with good intentions. The mother abandoned him for reasons we humans can't always fathom. I used to think Nature could be cruel, but I've come to see it's merely indifferent.

Seems like the name has started to fit in more ways than one... I hope the solution doesn't degrade his mental health any more than it is.

I have to agree with the concerns about Knut's mental health, but it's not going to be good for him to have all of his "family" removed from him entirely. As Meryl stated below, he's probably going to be moved to a zoo in Scandanavia, so, hopefully, Knut will be able to to be introduced to other polar bears there.

It would be hard to develop a relationship with an animal and then no longer be allowed to interact with him.

They never mention what the bear has done to determine he is a psychopath? But again, her is man interfering in nature for money. They got their millions of dollars, it's time to let the animal live a normal life in a safe environment; if possible.

I am just sorry for Knut. I can't believe that the Germans don't have the ability to act quickly and place him where he needs to be. They have "used" him and now just want to abandon him.

Hmm, I would have thought the Zoo would have tried to make his raising as natural as possible, and not give him human attention to the extent where he'll beg for it. But, perhaps it isn't their fault, the article doesn't specify.
I hope he can live happily in a sanctuary with less attention.

I think it is a bit much to label him " an animal psychopath ". Geez, just like some people to want to be a part of all the glitz & glamour than when it gets out of hand ~ thanks to human involvement ~ we place blame on the animal. Spare me! Now that they received all the publicity/monetary donations & the pedestal moment is over it is ok to toss the poor knut aside. Love how they use the guise to send it to a facility for his best interest. Hypocrites! They should be ashamed.
I think it is best for the knut to be away from the vultures anyway.

You know what this reminds me of- FREE WILLY- you know Oregon got the whale and kept in in our Coast Aquarium. He had shows and he simply loved people, he would splash and have so much fun. Then WE ( humans ) decided we would free him to the wild so he could live a productive and free life. He had NEVER had to fend for himself and no matter how many pods they tried to get him into he would always return. He got so sad and withdrawn when WE ( humans ) no longer allowed him to entertain. I think we all know the end result is that he died. In a case like this when this Bear has never known anything but human contact how can you label him with such a horrid name. I love and adore our Oregon Zoo- hundreds of thousands of dollars are spent in the various habitat to insure the animals are as close to their natural surroundings as they can get.
Give this guy a break- what is wrong with wanting to please people....

The damage is done. I'm not sure moving him is going to be healthy. If he crys out when he doesn't get attention isn't moving him going to make him depressed. Maybe we should move the zoo keeper to suclusion away from people and see how he does.

theres nothing wrong with him liking the attention. He was in the zoo, obviously he would get alot of it. Why not just let him enjoy it. It might be a problem if he crys though

I hope this poor baby can get some help from this. And the keepers at the zoo now have to understand the problems that being too close in raiseing a wild animal can bring. Train these people better!
