Cops Bust Wrong House, Kill Dog

Browse News

MARYLAND – An Accokeek Maryland family is mourning the loss of their boxer after sheriff's deputies shot and killed the dog during a botched raid.

Prince George County police were supposed to be serving a warrant to a man living two houses down from Pam and Frank Myers.

But the couple says as they sat in their home last Friday, officers busted in – apparently not having checked the numbers on the front of the house.

Frank Myers says the cops immediately realized their mistake upon entering – they had been searching for a suspected drug dealer. But officers in the back of the house found the family dog, Pearl – a five year-old boxer.

The shooting cop says he thought his life was in danger from the dog, so he killed her.

When Pam Myers found out her dog had been killed, she says she asked to go hold it. But the officers refused, and instead held the couple hostage for 45 minutes while they tried to clear things up.

Frank Myers says soon after, they left – without so much as apologizing or acknowledging they had killed the animal. Now the couple says they just want that apology. Sheriff's office officials say they're investigating the situation.

Incidentally, the man they intended to arrest has since been apprehended.

I never did understand the police practice of just "shooting" the dog/dogs...I know they have to keep them quiet so it doesn't alarm the owners, but why in the world don't they use a fast acting tranquilizer dart? Instead of killing innocent animals caught up in the violence?!?

It would really worry me that those people are the ones supposed to be keeping people safe and they can't even think to check the house numbers? Not very smart.

isn't this the same area where the mayor was also the innocent victim of a botched bust and both his labradors shot and killed - while running AWAY from the "peace officers"

why can't professionals just admit to the fault and apologize! What kind of world do we live in where others can't just say, "I'm sorry"?

I would be livid if my local law enforcement made that sort of mistake. Hopefully, the sheriff's department was held responsible for the situation and had to make some form of restitution to Pearl's family.

The least these stupid cops could have done was acknowledge their mistake and apoligized for being idiots. They probably didn't get any kind of reprimand and the whole thing just got covered up as usual.

I remember reading about this when it happened and never heard another word. I wonder if there were any repercussions for the officers and if anything was done for the family. Probably still hung up in the courts.

Is that a typo...clear or clean things up? And to be held hostage in your own home by the police, wow, these people need to take some action against this sheriffs department!

I'm sorry, but I just don't get these killings. If they feel their life is in danger, then by all means, you are entitled to defend yourself, but does it have to get to the point of killing? Why not an injury?

I understand mistakes happen in this world, but not to try to make any amends in this case is just mind boggling. There was no apology, financial restitution, or even offering to replace the dog. That's just down right pathetic.

I can never understand these 'mix ups' with addresses, just unbelievable! I feel so badly for this family that they lost their dog and were held back by the police and not apologized to! They deserve compensation for the loss of their dog and the pain and suffering they endured!

Another trigger-happy irresponsible police officer! This is just inexcusable and the kind of mixup that we hear about on tv and read in the newspapers so many times. How much trouble would it be to actually pay attention and make sure the house number is the correct one? I can't imagine the horror that this family went through and I can't understand why the police wouldn't let her comfort her dying dog. Internal affairs or private investigators need to find some answers here and hopefully prevent this type of action in the future.

The officer that did this should be fired! And the idiot who made the mistake of going into the wrong house needs to be fired as well.

Most dogs will defend their home although most really aren't going to bite only bark. I think cops sometimes use their authority and power to be able to shoot a dog too quickly. I know that if someone came into our home our dogs would literally go nuts. I have to really watch our female Lab when strangers come around she was abused early on in her life and does not trust strangers unless I am right there with her. She would definately be upset with cops in our house.
RIP you innocent Boxer.

Horrible. I've noticed officers often shoot harmless dogs because apparently they were "in danger". Somehow I doubt that, yet I can't explain the other reason...

I would imagine the officer could have done something to restrain the dog other than shooting. He needs to pay for the dog, take some extra gun training, be suspended for some time, and APOLOGIZE!!! They also need an apology from the rest of the force for hitting the wrong house. Good grief.

These kinds of mistakes sure don't make the police look like protectors. Shooting the
dog was awful and then not to let the owners go to the dog was really wrong.
I hope the police department did a full investigation on themselves and the poor quality of work.
