A Transcontinental Rescue

Browse News

When most of us return from vacation, we share stories of exotic and relaxing trips. But when one Boulder, Colo., woman brought back stories of animal cruelty to her workplace, everyone got involved in what became a transcontinental rescue.

Boulder, Colo. – Tanya is a Beagle mix who is afraid of new people, probably because of what happened to her when she was a pup.

“Tanya was dropped off at a shelter in Patras when she was just weeks old,” said Janet Forgrieve, owner of a one of the Greek pups, called Greekies. “It’s a shelter where dogs get dropped off or tied to trees in the middle of the night.”

Tanya is one of 17 dogs rescued last year by the Boulder Colo. Organization called the Bow Wow Buddies Foundation.

“Our in-house counsel went on a vacation to Greece and came back with stories on how horrible people treat their dogs there,” said Heidi Flammang, president of the Bow Wow Buddies Foundation. “And it’s really more of a cultural thing than money issue. Dogs are treated like pigeons here in the US. It’s sad.”

Flammang said that what she and her group found when they went to Greece to see things for themselves was startling.

“Dogs are chained to trees -- that’s their idea of a shelter,” she said. “And left there with water and stale bread for years. They never get off those chains.”

Greece is a country that hasn’t implemented spay or neuter practices. To manage stray canine populations, Flammang said the animals are poisoned or fed broken glass.

So once she heard about the atrocities facing Greek dogs, she utilized the power of her foundation to help with rescue efforts there.

“That being said, our first focus is in the US and supporting efforts here” she said. “But if there’s a way we can help the folks in Greece make a difference with a little bit of effort and financial support, then we’re all for it.”

Enter Tanya, who was at first fostered at Janet Forgrieve’s house, but never left.

“I actually had to sneak her in cuz I have a cat and technically, I’m only supposed to have one pet,” said Forgrieve. “It didn’t take long after that to bond with her. She’s a momma’s girl.”

Bow Wow Buddies’ goal is to promote health, humane treatment and homes for dogs in need. To date, they’ve placed about 2,000 animals in loving homes. Tanya is one of the lucky ones.

“She just fit into my life and got into my heart,” said Forgrieve. “And I firmly believe our animals choose us rather than the other way around. I don’t think she chose my cat, but she chose me.”

All 17 Greekies that Bow Wow Buddies has brought stateside have been rescued. The group’s partners in Greece plan to brnig an additional eight dogs to Denver and Boulder within the next month.

What a great thing for this organization to do. It's hard enough for groups to find the funds to do their work here, but this group decided to take on another countries troubles. Good for them!

Doesn't matter where you are in the world when you witness some form of abuse at least the person did something about it. She has a heart!

I hope that soon, the whole world will follow good animal rights laws-it really upsets me to hear of how certain countries treat animals like refuse. But, what wamrs my heart are the people who do what they can to try to make the situation better for those poor, suffering animals.

It's unfortunate how different culture treat animals but I'm glad a few so far have been "rescued" and hopefully will find caring parents.

It is so hard to decide what should be done in a situation like this. Dogs are treated very differently all over the world. We, in the US, have huge problems of our own with dogs that don't have homes.

An admirable group, but don't we have enough homeless and abused animals here that need to be rescued?

Feeding dogs broken glass to get rid of them??!??!! What kind of people are they? Funny how in other countries dogs are nothing but to us, they are sometimes our kids and always our best friends.

Imagine being sentenced to solitary and not even have committed a crime! These poor dogs will never get to be man's best friend just because they were born in countries that don't treat their animals well, or can't afford to. It's a shame for humanity in general.

I'm torn - it is heartbreaking what is happening to these animals, but unfortunately it happens to a lot of animals through out the world that we cannot control. there are still a lot of animals here in the US that get that treatment as well that we could help and have more of an impact on.

I am very happy they did their part to rescue these Greekies, but there is plenty of animal rescue work to do in our own country every day. But I guess this was i their face and they had to do something about it. Great job.

Some cultures think us strange for the way we treat our animals and value them. This was a wonderful solution to the situation. Hope the collaboration between the two countries can bring about a better solution to the plight of the Greek dogs.

Strange how different cultures react to different living things. A lot could be read into that. Maybe the ASPCA should send a team to Greece to teach them just how wonderful and valuable dogs can be.

I hope this will start a new thing in Greece so that they will take car of their pets better. America seems to like to try to take care other's problems even when we have those of our own.

wow that is sad and pathetic. I'm glad that animal rescue groups like this one go to different parts of the world and check out animal shelters and animal care. I think they should try to get some funding for animal programs over in greece that way they don't have more problems like these.

I think educating the human populace of Greece would be a more effective method of helping out the canine population. Concentrate on the disease, not the symptom! But, nonetheless, kudos to their efforts.

I can't believe that there are no spay & neuter programs or animal rescues groups to help the animals in Greece. What a tragedy that stray dogs are fed chards of glass- that is inhumane.

Why not get some of the Greek residents interested in neutering for starters??
It's wonderful to help where you can.... but really, let's start in our own back yard.
Many many mistreated, abused, abandoned animals in the USA.

I am happy to hear that these animals are being rescued. However, I wonder how useful it is to bring dogs across the Atlantic Ocean in order to find a new home. That trip must be difficult on the dogs.

people don't view animals the same way we do in other countries. They let them roam the streets free, feed them scraps or don't feed them at all. I have a pothound from grenada...great dog but behavioral issues from his past. the more we educate people, the better we tend to treat our pets.
