when our dog was hurt in an accident State Farm paid the bill. It was considered damage to owners property. Of course this was many years ago.

While $500 is really only a token amount should the animal need medical care for a serious injury, it's a nice acknowledgment of the value of companion animals.

I guess I never thought about this before. I usually don't take my pets in the car but it is a good thing to think about. I know that if you are getting paid to transfer people, etc, your insurance may not cover that. The companies try to find any loop hole so they don't have to pay.

I never considered this when having the dog jump in a car with me. If we wanted to go to the park or were going to visit friends, the dog would join us. At least one company is now helping out those hurt in accidents.

I have seen some commericals where a insurance company says that they cover your animal in case of a accident. I bet they have been getting a lot of calls since it has been on television.

Homeowner insurance does not cover pets either last I checked, so I think this is a great update in todays insurance given one of the other articles that indicated how many households have pets.

I work in insurance and one of the frequently asked questions after an accident is if there is coverage for their animal that was in the vehicle during the accident.

this brings up a good point. Always have your animal in a carrier and the carrier strapped in or fixed in while driving to prevent serious injury in case of sudden stop or accident.

Wow - this is great. Especially as it is without additional cost to the insured persons. Would love to see this trend extend to other companies.

As the years pass, general lifestyles change, and nowadays (in the country) we include our pets much more often, taking them more places.
