ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- When her parents went to purchase their new Papillon puppy, Maya, in March 2007, Ren Dylewicz fell in love with another available dog, a 4-month-old Cocker Spaniel.
Dylewicz wound up taking the puppy, Emmy, home and dreaded parting ways when her third year of college year commenced this fall -- but, in the end, she didn't have to.
Dylewicz's school, Eckerd College, a liberal arts school in St.Petersburg, Fla., permitted Emmy, and other pets, to reside on campus, too.
"It's nice to have something always here to come home to, especially with homesickness," Dylewicz said. "She's my home now."
Eckerd is one of fewer than a dozen colleges that allow dorm dwellers to keep larger pets on campus. Some of the 40-plus registered pets here include dogs, cats, rabbits and ferrets.
"We have a lot of students who come from the Northeast, the Midwest ... out in the west. They've come a long distance and we want them to feel like they're at home," Mike Robilotto, Eckerd's director of Residence Life explained.

I think that pets should be allowed at college. I'm college age and I don't know what I would do without my animals. I take very good care of them and they get overloaded on love and attention. It just depends on the person really.
