City Seeks to Evict Bicycle-Riding Rooster

City Seeks to Evict Bicycle-Riding Rooster: Mr. Clucky is a hit among tourists and locals on Miami Beach, but now his ways of early-dawn crowing have landed him in the hot seat. He's been served an eviction notice by the city.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- The plucky Mr. Clucky was just another site in the long line of Miami Beach eccentricities, but now the bicycle-riding rooster has gone from a famed tourist attraction to an infamous nuisance.

Thanks to Mr. Clucky's habit of 6 a.m. crowing, owner Mark Buckley was ticketed by a code enforcement officer on May 27 for keeping a farm animal.

"People seem to love Mr. Clucky. They love to hear him crow," Buckley said in an April ZT Pet News interview. "It's kinda something different for them, kinda bringing a little nature to the beach."

That public sentiment might have changed since the city received a complaint and went to investigate. Now Buckley faces a $50 fine, as well as an order to get rid of the famous fowl.

Mr. Clucky draws a crowd not only because of his ability to perch on a bike's handlebars while cruising through popular outdoor retail areas, but also due to his activism.

Mr. Clucky was named Miami Beach's "Activist of the Year" by MetroMix Magazine in 2008.

Watch the Zootoo Pet News video above for a better look into Mr. Clucky's life prior to the city's eviction notice.

The honor comes after Mr. Clucky's involvement with several animal welfare causes, such as leading the "Walk for the Farm Animals," joining a local eighth grader's protest against Kentucky Fried Chicken's alleged torture of animals and being the mascot for Critical Mass, Miami's Earth-friendly activist and bike riding enthusiast group.

The celebrity bird was also grand marshal of last fall's King Mango Strut in nearby Coconut Grove.

But the work Mr. Clucky and Buckley do in volunteering -- with organizations such as EarthSave and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals -- is something near and dear to their hearts.

"I found Mr. Clucky in my neighborhood in Miami Beach," Buckley previously told ZT Pet News. "He was hurt in the bushes, his beak was cut off to his face and he had a cut on his head."

Buckley says he believes the rooster escaped from some sort of religious ceremony. He nursed him to recovery and the pair have been best friends for the past three years.

Now their friendship hangs in the balance. Buckley could receive repeated citations and higher fines if he doesn't comply with taking Mr. Clucky out of the city. But officials say an arrest is not likely.

Ironically, Buckley joked with ZT Pet News in April that he wished he could train Mr. Clucky to "stop screaming early in the morning and sleep a little later."

Although Buckley could not be reach as of press time, his Web site indicates the duo plan to fight city hall for Mr. Buckley's right to remain a Miami Beach resident.

I really cannot imagine the rooster crowing is worse than cars honking their horns and the late-night partying--it is Miami Beach after all, not exactly a sleepy little town.

Miami people need to grow up and get over it. A chicken is no worse than having a neighbor's dog barking day and night!

There are complaints about barking dogs, too and people end up having to move or get rid of their dog. If you can't control your animals behavior for the neighborhood you live in you shouldn't have it.

Well, if I lived next door to the rooster, I might not appreciate his early alarm, but in the city people should be used to noise and I am sure there are worse noises in Miami.

Too bad because the rooster seems like a cool thing. If people are partying into the early morning hours and a rooster crows it could be a pain in the neck. People and animals can´t seem to live in harmony. Humans have their own agenda and it is sad to see how the world/earth is turning out because of it.

if theres no evidence of abuse, get over it. There are far more pressing crimes in the animal community than this.

If it is a consistent nuisance it would irritate me, too. Not everybody is on the same work schedule. I get up at 5:30 so this wouldn't bother me, but seriously take other people into consideration. Even though I'm up doesn't mean I'm going to let my dog bark and bother other people.

I guess I could see if it was constant but it sounds like a lot of fussing over something so little. Guess we can't really say how we feel till we experience the situation for ourselves.

They should spend the time it took for a citation to get more evidence on a dog fighting or cock fighting group. There has to be some loop hole for Mr. Clucky!

I wish this news story had an added link to sign a petition to allow him to stay. Here is an animal that survived abuse, was rescued, cared for and brings a lot of joy to people. I think city hall probably has bigger battles to fight....

Just a warning that emails sent to city hall becomes public record, so if you go that route, everyone has access to your personal email.

So, the City of Miami Beach doesn't have anything better to do than harass a man and his chicken. Mr. Buckley and Mr. Clucky perform volunteer work. How horrible is that? How many complaints have they received and from who? If they got complaints from people that lived two blocks away, Mr. Clucky's crowing couldn't be bothering them. Next, the City of Miami will be going after people that use alarm clocks with loud bells. Leave this man and Mr. Clucky alone. Find something else to pick on.

I wonder what the crime rate is in Miami Beach and the amount of time someone is spending to try and force Mr.Clucky out? They should spend that time protecting Miami's citizens.

Higher than the national average according to all the web sites. Looks like they'd have better things to do than pick on a rooster that crows at 6 am.
