City Seeks to Evict Bicycle-Riding Rooster

City Seeks to Evict Bicycle-Riding Rooster: Mr. Clucky is a hit among tourists and locals on Miami Beach, but now his ways of early-dawn crowing have landed him in the hot seat. He's been served an eviction notice by the city.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- The plucky Mr. Clucky was just another site in the long line of Miami Beach eccentricities, but now the bicycle-riding rooster has gone from a famed tourist attraction to an infamous nuisance.

Thanks to Mr. Clucky's habit of 6 a.m. crowing, owner Mark Buckley was ticketed by a code enforcement officer on May 27 for keeping a farm animal.

"People seem to love Mr. Clucky. They love to hear him crow," Buckley said in an April ZT Pet News interview. "It's kinda something different for them, kinda bringing a little nature to the beach."

That public sentiment might have changed since the city received a complaint and went to investigate. Now Buckley faces a $50 fine, as well as an order to get rid of the famous fowl.

Mr. Clucky draws a crowd not only because of his ability to perch on a bike's handlebars while cruising through popular outdoor retail areas, but also due to his activism.

Mr. Clucky was named Miami Beach's "Activist of the Year" by MetroMix Magazine in 2008.

Watch the Zootoo Pet News video above for a better look into Mr. Clucky's life prior to the city's eviction notice.

The honor comes after Mr. Clucky's involvement with several animal welfare causes, such as leading the "Walk for the Farm Animals," joining a local eighth grader's protest against Kentucky Fried Chicken's alleged torture of animals and being the mascot for Critical Mass, Miami's Earth-friendly activist and bike riding enthusiast group.

The celebrity bird was also grand marshal of last fall's King Mango Strut in nearby Coconut Grove.

But the work Mr. Clucky and Buckley do in volunteering -- with organizations such as EarthSave and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals -- is something near and dear to their hearts.

"I found Mr. Clucky in my neighborhood in Miami Beach," Buckley previously told ZT Pet News. "He was hurt in the bushes, his beak was cut off to his face and he had a cut on his head."

Buckley says he believes the rooster escaped from some sort of religious ceremony. He nursed him to recovery and the pair have been best friends for the past three years.

Now their friendship hangs in the balance. Buckley could receive repeated citations and higher fines if he doesn't comply with taking Mr. Clucky out of the city. But officials say an arrest is not likely.

Ironically, Buckley joked with ZT Pet News in April that he wished he could train Mr. Clucky to "stop screaming early in the morning and sleep a little later."

Although Buckley could not be reach as of press time, his Web site indicates the duo plan to fight city hall for Mr. Buckley's right to remain a Miami Beach resident.

For more information on Mr. Clucky and Buckley's petition to the city of Miami Beach, visit www.MrClucky.com

We quickly brought our rooster to a petting farm once we discovered that she was a he. While I love the sound of a rooster crowing, it's not something you want to experience at 5 in the morning if it's not your rooster. Considering all of the notoriety that this particular rooster has received, you'd think that someone could figure something out. Just keeping it in a darkened room won't work until their body clock is reset. There are tips on Backyard Chickens' website, but the only real solution is to have his vocal cords cut, something I personally wouldn't want to see happen.

Seriously... ppl are so annoying. I had a rooster and i had to get rid of him because of noise. My neighbors were complaining. which i could have cared less for there complaints but my nana and papa made me.... a rooster is pretty much out numbered by the noise of the city. I doubt if I would find the rooster crowing at dawn as cute as the rooster riding around in the middle of the day.

Roosters can be really loud they can start as early as 4 in the morning! But in the city there is a lot more noise than a Rooster Crowing.

if this man wants a rooster i dont see a problem with it... i know people that have bigger and louder mouths then a rooster call. miami has too many rules they need to worry more about crime and how nasty parts of the city are then a man and a rooster and how loud the rooster is.. heck its a free alarm clock tell whoever is complaining they need to get there lazy butts out of bed anyway.

We live on a farm. Our roosters crow every morning (afternoon and evening also!) but what's the big deal? Personally, i find the sound of engine noise (trucks, motocycles, horns) a horrible intrusive noise. And lawn mowers. And basketballs bouncing on pavement. And babies crying......all the noise that goes with masses of humanity...i find THAT obnoxious. So, i'm here with the roosters crowing away all day long and very happy about that kind of noise.

Ok. So you don't want to hear the chicken crowing
at 6:00 in the morning. Well, how about our birds who
chirp and wake us up at that hour. I find it relaxing myself.
But if it bothers those who hear the rooster maybe his
owner could take him on the bicycle ride at 7:00 instead.

Can't believe the police would ticket such a scenario of a
person being this kind to a "Chicken" because it is a "Farm
Animal." If I could get my Bailey (cat) to ride on the handle
bars of a bike more power to both of us. I think the neighbors
would get a real "kick" out of it.

Why don't the police find better things to do like catching
a robber, murderer, rapist than worry about a "damn"
chicken on a bicycle who isn't harming anyone and others
are enjoying the pleasure of his company.

What a thing to crow about. That same area has had cats being killed and strange things done to them. There has also been horses slaughtered in their own pastures. What's going on down their? Leave the chicken alone and go after the people committing crimes.

I would hope the Miami Beach police have better things to do than ticked a man for his rooster. Please, people go to bed at all hours, and the noise on the beach and the general area is always there. Are they saying a rooster is the only thing making noise at 6:00 am on Miami Beach?

I don't see a valid reason behind the rule against keeping farm animals in the city. What harm could a pet chicken do? Those rules are archaic and should adapt to the growing interest in non traditional pets.

What a beautiful Rooster, and very intelligent. Smarter than alot of people, and doing more as an activist than alot of people. Maybe City Hall is afraid that he might show to many people up! Spring break, crimes little more time spent on these subjects wouldn't hurt don't you think?

There has to be a better way. What about a dark covering over the place he sleeps? That's what some people do to have a little control over when their birds sleep and when they awake. At least they could try it. It seems to me that they do so much good they shouldn't be split up!

When I was first married, we lived in a double triplex that was next door to a small chicken ranch that we didn't see when we took the apt. At first I could hear the rooster but it didn't take long to get used to it and sleep in! Guess some have more sensitive hearing than others.

This wrong on so many levels, this bird is honored as an Animal Activists, how cool is that,we have more pressing issues on animal abuse, torture, vivisection, experimentation,BSL and so many more and they want to make Mr.Clucky's owner give him up and I'm sorry but a rooster should not be labeled as a barn animal, there ar latino's in Los Angeles city limmits that have chickens and roosters and they not hounded by the city to get rid of them,Miami needs to follow suit.
