China Kills Thousands of Cats as Olympics Approach

Browse News

BEIJING – In an attempt to clean-up one of the world's most populous cities before thousands of foreigners flock there for the 2008 Olympic Summer Games, China has begun carrying out the round-up, and extermination of thousands of cats.

UK newspaper Daily Mail reported that the animals are being brought to government “death camps” where without food, water or health care they die of starvation and disease.

According to the reports, a Chinese government campaign has told Beijing residents to beware of stray and feral cats, as they may carry disease – even attributing the spread of SARS in 2003 partially to the animals.

One result of the campaign has been mild hysteria, in one case two concerned kindergarten teachers were so afraid of potential illness reaching their students that they killed six stray felines by beating them to death with sticks.

Animal activists say Beijing residents are abandoning their animals in the streets for fear of possible contamination from the diseases the government claims felines carry.

Animal rights groups in the country have begun speaking out against the 'clean-up' but due to fear of reprisal are limited in their ability to protest.

In all, an estimated 500,000 felines are said to have been culled by the government.

Government officials assert that people can adopt the cats they round up from any of the 12 pounds located throughout the city, but animal activists claim the facilities are “almost impossible to get inside.”

One group adopted 30 cats from one such compound, but reported that within days, half the felines died due to diseases.

“These cats are being left to die. It is very humane,” said Yan Qi, founder of the aforementioned rescue group.

According to another rescuer, disease in the pounds spreads quickly because the animals are kept in tiny cages and in very tight proximity to one another.

Since adopting the sick animals, Yan’s group has been banned from entering the pounds.

“We have tried to negotiate with the government to stop the round-ups and to introduce cut-price neutering services so that people can afford to keep their pets but they won’t listen,” she said. “They are not thinking about the cats. They just want to get the quickest results in the quickest way possible, by clearing as many cats from the city as they can.”

According to former doctor and current cat caretaker, 80 year-old Hu Yuan, many of the cats are also being sent to southern Chinese city of Guangzhou – known for serving meat from dogs and cats and other exotic animals.

Cleaning up cats isn’t the government’s only recent tactic to improve the city’s appearance in the days leading up to the games. To ease smog, polluting factories will be shut down, but only for the duration of the events.

Subway fares will be reduced to keep riders off polluting buses, and homeless people are being given rail passes and encouraged to return to their home cities.

Taxi drivers are being taught simple greetings in English as part of a courtesy campaign aimed at teaching Beijing’s notoriously “grumpy” residents to be polite.

As of right now, there have been 2066 comments posted. If everyone who commented would spread the word of this inhumane practice or e-mail a sponsor or the IOC, it would help the animals more. There are a lot of resources in these comments & a rudimentary search on the internet would find many more. Actions speak louder.

Well - I sent Coca-Cola an email regarding their sponsorship of the Olympics - here it is - Folks:

I am certain that this is not the first nor will it be the last communication that you will receive on the subject of the upcoming Olympics. I personally take great offense to the fact that you choose to support a government that is involved with so many human rights violations in the world today and a country that also engages in the inhumane treatment of animals by among other things rounding up cats and feeding them ground glass. The atrocities in Darfur and now Tibet are beyond comprehension for any person who believes in freedom.

I have been a Coke drinker for many years but will decline to purchase any more Coke products nor the products of any other manufacturer who continues with support of this government. I urge you to give serious consideration to your continued support of a government that has no regard for human or animal rights.

I do realize that the loss of one persons business will have basically no impact on your bottom line but I believe that you will find that the business that you loose will be more than just mine.

Thank you for the opportunity to express my views and I do hope that you reconsider your decision. It would be nice for once to see something more than the almighty dollar drive a business decision.

And - here is their response. Thank you for contacting The Coca-Cola Company. We appreciate the opportunity to respond.

The Coca-Cola Company joins others in expressing deep concern for the situation on the ground in Tibet. We know that all parties involved hope for a peaceful resolution.

While it would be an inappropriate role for sponsors to comment on the political situation of individual nations, as the longest-standing sponsor of the Olympic Movement, we firmly believe that the Olympics are a force for good. Since 1928, we have supported the Olympic Games wherever they’ve been held, and have witnessed first-hand the cultural, economic and social benefits they bring to the host city and country.

We remain committed to supporting the Torch Relay, which provides a unique opportunity to share the Olympic values of unity, pride and inspiration with people all over the world.

As always, feel free to contact us again to share comments or concerns in the future.

Please allow me to translate - We're greedy, this is a huge money making opportunity and there is no way that we will pass that up.

The Chinese government's treatment of cats is sad and very disturbing. However, it does not seem out of character in a country known for killing female infants because male children are considered more valuable. Also, there is the conflict with Tibet. The Chinese government could use some education on humane treatment of animals and people.

An earlier comment summed it up pretty well....life is cheap in China. Look at how they have treated the Tibetans for so many years. Maybe the Olympics will draw attention to the destruction that they cause to their own and others. The US should completely boycott.

Horrible. but this is the same country that nearly annhilated the Shar Pei during Mao's cultural revolution. Factories spew out enough poison to cause high cancer rates, people are even encouraged to smoke in an effort to reduce the human population. Life is cheap, China has no regard for humans or animals.

This is horrible. I can understand that they want to exterminate cats with illnesses and who are going to die or spread deseases, as long as it is a merciful way and painless for the cats. However, what the residents of the city are doing is absolutely chaotic. Those kindergarten teachers were in the wrong BIG time for battering those cats, and the families throughing their pets out without even trying to be able to keep them are completely selfish and are acting on impulse. They need to go about this a whole different way.

I have alot of respect for the athletes who are choosing to boycott. I still can't believe that Bejing was considered a respectable choice. I was already sick about the Tibetans being so inhumanely treated, and this makes it yet worse. My only hope is that the Olympics will help to make human rights violations by China(and inhumane treatment of animals) an issue that can no longer be swept under the rug. What a sick and cruel culture.

Just one further note and that is to say that organizations such as PETA are working with animal rights organizations in China to help improve the lives of all animals there; however, it is a long-term effort and will not produce results instantly. I applaud the Chinese animal activists who are trying to do what they can and do not mean to denigrate their feelings or their efforts. I am profoundly grateful for all that is being done on the ground by the people of China who care about this and there are many, many who do.

Any society, any nation, is judged on the basis of how it treats its weakest members -- the last, the least, the littlest."
~Cardinal Roger Mahony, In a 1998 letter, Creating a Culture of Life; Mahatma Gandhi is credited with saying the same thing. This kind of mass roundup of stray animals to improve its public image is appalling and inhumane. If they are going to the effort of rounding them up, couldn't they feed them and shelter them somehow and even alter them to prevent even MORE strays? I understand they are rounding them up and leaving them to die. P.S. China - the world is watching and many of us are crying. The angels weep.

This is wrong way to do things!!!!! I know this for a fact!! Don't just kill an animal if it's overpopulating just try to do something other than that!!! That isn't the right way to do things it never will be just what if that was dogs? I dont care if it was the presidant coming in for some meating YOU STILL SHOULDN'T KILL ANY ANIMAL!! I know if that they should get rid of some but not by killing them!!!! That is just sicking and heart breaking!! What if the govener jsut decided "oh well this country is too over populated lets just kill some people to get rid of them!" Well that is wrong too!! Just put it in another perspective and you will understand!

I think everyone on Zootoo is in agreement that this policy is very wrong. It's important to take it to the next level and find a positive action that you can do in response. Blind fury by itself accomplishes nothing. And generalizing that anger to all Chinese people is wrong, so be careful where you go with your anger. Anger itself is fine, just be sure to channel it into a positive outlet.

Exactly, hymcheng- people say they did it on purpose to kill our pets, but also say all they care about is money. Well, if they want money, there has to be pets to need their product, or they go out of business. And considering the workers who make the food probably are only paid about $0.40 an hour, it isn't like they're being greedy and getting rich from it. It's just a matter of poor quality control because they have to make it as cheaply as possible so Americans will buy the cheaper product- it's a small profit margin with out much room for quality control. It was a terrible thing to happen, but hardly a malicious act.

It's unfortunate, but sick & diseased animals that are overrunning a city or area must often be euthanized to control the population and spread of disease. Sick animals should be euthanized in the correct way though- not left to starve to death.

It looks like China has waited too long though to deal with this problem- had they started the effort to curb the cat population when they either started bidding for the games or when the received confirmation, they may have been able to do this more humanely.

Inhumane treatment by inhumane people. Their lack of concern and care for humans isn't much better if you think about it. Little girls are disposable in China, why wouldn't their cats be merely "trash" to get rid of?
