China Kills Thousands of Cats as Olympics Approach

Browse News

BEIJING – In an attempt to clean-up one of the world's most populous cities before thousands of foreigners flock there for the 2008 Olympic Summer Games, China has begun carrying out the round-up, and extermination of thousands of cats.

UK newspaper Daily Mail reported that the animals are being brought to government “death camps” where without food, water or health care they die of starvation and disease.

According to the reports, a Chinese government campaign has told Beijing residents to beware of stray and feral cats, as they may carry disease – even attributing the spread of SARS in 2003 partially to the animals.

One result of the campaign has been mild hysteria, in one case two concerned kindergarten teachers were so afraid of potential illness reaching their students that they killed six stray felines by beating them to death with sticks.

Animal activists say Beijing residents are abandoning their animals in the streets for fear of possible contamination from the diseases the government claims felines carry.

Animal rights groups in the country have begun speaking out against the 'clean-up' but due to fear of reprisal are limited in their ability to protest.

In all, an estimated 500,000 felines are said to have been culled by the government.

Government officials assert that people can adopt the cats they round up from any of the 12 pounds located throughout the city, but animal activists claim the facilities are “almost impossible to get inside.”

One group adopted 30 cats from one such compound, but reported that within days, half the felines died due to diseases.

“These cats are being left to die. It is very humane,” said Yan Qi, founder of the aforementioned rescue group.

According to another rescuer, disease in the pounds spreads quickly because the animals are kept in tiny cages and in very tight proximity to one another.

Since adopting the sick animals, Yan’s group has been banned from entering the pounds.

“We have tried to negotiate with the government to stop the round-ups and to introduce cut-price neutering services so that people can afford to keep their pets but they won’t listen,” she said. “They are not thinking about the cats. They just want to get the quickest results in the quickest way possible, by clearing as many cats from the city as they can.”

According to former doctor and current cat caretaker, 80 year-old Hu Yuan, many of the cats are also being sent to southern Chinese city of Guangzhou – known for serving meat from dogs and cats and other exotic animals.

Cleaning up cats isn’t the government’s only recent tactic to improve the city’s appearance in the days leading up to the games. To ease smog, polluting factories will be shut down, but only for the duration of the events.

Subway fares will be reduced to keep riders off polluting buses, and homeless people are being given rail passes and encouraged to return to their home cities.

Taxi drivers are being taught simple greetings in English as part of a courtesy campaign aimed at teaching Beijing’s notoriously “grumpy” residents to be polite.

This happens every time there is an Olympics. In Athens they used powdered glass to kill the stray cats and dogs. Olympics is bad news for animals regardless of where it is held. Would be nice if these countries thought about these things before they became a problem.

Well, if I had ever had any intention of attending the Olympic games in China, this would certainly have stopped me. If only they would take a clue from India and abandon this insanity in favor of a spay/neuter program. By confining all these cats up together, they're merely *encouraging* the spread of disease, not to mention, of course, being grossly inhumane.

I hope that international attention and pressure on China will make it rethink its stance on animals. It will take awhile, but if the pressure if kept up, hopefully these types of events won't happen again.

And what is the U.S. stance in this? This is not only inhumane but disgusting. It really goes to show you how lucky we are to live in the USA. How uninformed the Chinese people are.

The more we hear about China, it makes us wonder how they were chosen to host the Olympics in the first place. All the products recalled lately in the United States have been made in China, will it be safe for our Olympiads to travel over there? As far as the killing of the cats, it does not surprise me, many foreign countries have no regard for animals, they treat them as food, leave them without food or water in little cages to sell in open air markets like they aren't even living, breathing creatures. It's pathetic!

Maybe you're right, but I think the IOC has other criteria besides money by which they choose the host city. I do hope that with the Olympics coming, something good will come of all of this for Beijing, whether it is a better awareness of cat overpopulation problems and sound solutions for this, or other issues.

Agreed, but the Olympic commitee has a responsibility to monitor the actions of an Olympic host site and hold them higher standards. The Olympics are supposed to represent the best of what the world has to offer.

It's a no win situation for China. Leave the cats and all of the tourists will be freaking out and saying how disgusting the Chinese people are for having so many strays. Kill the cats and the international community is in an uproar over their extermination. I wish there were a simpler solution to this problem.

The more I hear about China in the news recently regarding Tibet, it seems not surprising the country would have this policy towards animals. I am becoming more and more convinced that their record on their treatment on humans, animals, and the enviroment is more than reason enough for there to be a widespread boycott of the Olympics.

And yet another reason why the Olympics or any other event should not be held in China. Could they at the VERY least humanely euthanize the cats rather than allowing them to starve to death? Or would that be too costly for a government that is all about it's own self promotion.

"Take money from the government"??? This policy was instated BY the government. I agree that it is cruel to leave the cats to starve, but remember that it is the actions of the government, and the government allows no dissention. We need to understand the situation better before passing judgment.

I've been to China and was really surprised at the lack of concern or care for companion animals. I was in Beijing and there weren't even birds around. I assumed they were all killed because they compete for foood. There are a lot of people in China and feeding them is no doubt the first concern. I'm pretty surprised that they would wipe out cats though. Imagine the rat and mouse problem they are creating by doing so.

I was also in China (Shanghai and Anhui Province) and was surprised by the same things. It is certainly a very different culture. While I respect that their culture is not the same as mine, I do wish they would change some of their policies regarding human rights, the environment, as well as their approach to animals.

What can one say. China is not an open society & does what it chooses. People have reacted the way they have because they are controlled. As we become a global society we see more events that are not consistent with our philosophies. There are those in society less morally developed & more morally developed than we are. We must, temporarily, accept the things we cannot change & change the things we can.

Ugh! China is probably the most evil country. They treat animals horrrrrribly. How can you eat a dog? They always go around the country beating animals, dogs, with sticks. They will take someone's dog from them right on the street and do it. It's sick. They kills thousands and thousands of sharks evey year (70,000) for shark fin soup every year! They grab a shark from the water, cut off all its fins and throw it back in the water! Hohw sick are you!? They have Fur Farms which are they most disgusting things in the world. They will beat the animals on the ground, using their tails to throw them around, step on their neck until blood comes out their nose, and SKIN THEM ALIVE! They are insane.

While it's true that SOME people in China are very cruel towards animals, it is by far not all. To over generalize like that only serves to spread racism and hatred. To be clear, the practices you talked about are very unacceptable- I agree. I just don't want to see an entire nation of individual people lumped in to one category of "evil". Our government and many people in our country do things for which we would never want to be blamed, and in that, the people of China are no different. There re MANY good people in China- Yan Qi and the people in his rescue group, for example, who are taking actions to help these cats despite the likely repercussions. Stereotypical thinking and generalized anger will not help the situation. Channel your anger into positive actions, and work on increasing your compassion for all living beings. Compassion and understand will go a lot father to improve the world.
