China Kills Thousands of Cats as Olympics Approach

Browse News

BEIJING – In an attempt to clean-up one of the world's most populous cities before thousands of foreigners flock there for the 2008 Olympic Summer Games, China has begun carrying out the round-up, and extermination of thousands of cats.

UK newspaper Daily Mail reported that the animals are being brought to government “death camps” where without food, water or health care they die of starvation and disease.

According to the reports, a Chinese government campaign has told Beijing residents to beware of stray and feral cats, as they may carry disease – even attributing the spread of SARS in 2003 partially to the animals.

One result of the campaign has been mild hysteria, in one case two concerned kindergarten teachers were so afraid of potential illness reaching their students that they killed six stray felines by beating them to death with sticks.

Animal activists say Beijing residents are abandoning their animals in the streets for fear of possible contamination from the diseases the government claims felines carry.

Animal rights groups in the country have begun speaking out against the 'clean-up' but due to fear of reprisal are limited in their ability to protest.

In all, an estimated 500,000 felines are said to have been culled by the government.

Government officials assert that people can adopt the cats they round up from any of the 12 pounds located throughout the city, but animal activists claim the facilities are “almost impossible to get inside.”

One group adopted 30 cats from one such compound, but reported that within days, half the felines died due to diseases.

“These cats are being left to die. It is very humane,” said Yan Qi, founder of the aforementioned rescue group.

According to another rescuer, disease in the pounds spreads quickly because the animals are kept in tiny cages and in very tight proximity to one another.

Since adopting the sick animals, Yan’s group has been banned from entering the pounds.

“We have tried to negotiate with the government to stop the round-ups and to introduce cut-price neutering services so that people can afford to keep their pets but they won’t listen,” she said. “They are not thinking about the cats. They just want to get the quickest results in the quickest way possible, by clearing as many cats from the city as they can.”

According to former doctor and current cat caretaker, 80 year-old Hu Yuan, many of the cats are also being sent to southern Chinese city of Guangzhou – known for serving meat from dogs and cats and other exotic animals.

Cleaning up cats isn’t the government’s only recent tactic to improve the city’s appearance in the days leading up to the games. To ease smog, polluting factories will be shut down, but only for the duration of the events.

Subway fares will be reduced to keep riders off polluting buses, and homeless people are being given rail passes and encouraged to return to their home cities.

Taxi drivers are being taught simple greetings in English as part of a courtesy campaign aimed at teaching Beijing’s notoriously “grumpy” residents to be polite.

I agree with you, I don't understand how the poeple can be so gullible to believe their government officials with the fear they are spreading. They are innocent homeless animals being tortured for nothing more than the freggin Olympics!

Gullibility does not discriminate based on nationality or race. Some of us believe everything we see on television, as long as it's reported by CNN. In my books, that's gullible.

You have to consider that they live in an environment where there is NO free flow of information. Everything the people hear is strictly controlled by the government. In addition, the average citizen lives on a very tight budget, and has no extra money to spend on pets for things like spaying or neutering and extra veterinary care. We live in such a different environment that it seems inconceivable to us that such government propaganda would be believed, but we are allowed and encouraged to question the government. We can't criticize so harshly unless we understand what life is really like in China. Condemnation does not help anything; working to increase our understanding of the world and having compassion for all people will be a start to making the world a better place for all living beings.

China is such a big powerful country. Why can't they find loving homes for their stray cats? There are a lot of people who live in China. Can't someone find it in their hearts to help these cats?

There have been individual citizens coming forth and hoarding these cats to save them from extermination. So to answer your question, yes, there are good-hearted Chinese people out there who love animals.

It is a big country, but the average citizen has very little extra income. Two thirds of Chinese people live on less than $1 a day. That really doesn't leave any extra money to care for a pet.

Thanks, Bill G. for sharing the e-mail you wrote. If we would all take some action, it would go a long way to being "the change you want to see in the world". This story continues to haunt me & the only way I can sleep is to tell myself that I did something for these, and other, innocent animals.

This disturbs me. While I realize that China may not have the mean to provide the city with a proper animal control system, this has gotten way out of hand. I find it especially concerning that the government will not provided cheap spay and neuter facilaties like we have here in the States and that they are not allowing recsue groups to attempt to save the poor animals from disease. I think that the visiting Olympic athletes, coachs, and their family will be horrified to learn that this is how China prepares for their visitors.

Thank you for providing constructive criticism! Rather than railing against the Chinese, everyone should focus on coming up with a long-term solution to this problem. I personally think animal welfare groups should go to China and assist the local groups in massive S&N programs.

part of the bleakness has to do with the media portrayal of China. Another part has to do with the fact that this is a country that is on the cusp of change, and the international community is very impatient to see things turn around overnight. Change takes time. Be patient and supportive.

This was an awful story to read about. With that many feral / stray cats running around for this long, I know that the majority of these cats were probably too sick to save to begin with. That doesn't give any one the right to beat them to death with boards,or expire their lives in an inhumane way.And by the way,it's unreal how they can ship some of these sick cats out to other places for "food" After this massacre is over,do they plan on solving the original problems that started it all,or are they going to continue to let it happen all over again? It's not right to "kill" the animals, shut down dirty factories, and hide all the problems of their country, etc, just so they look good for the Olympics.
