China Kills Thousands of Cats as Olympics Approach

Browse News

BEIJING – In an attempt to clean-up one of the world's most populous cities before thousands of foreigners flock there for the 2008 Olympic Summer Games, China has begun carrying out the round-up, and extermination of thousands of cats.

UK newspaper Daily Mail reported that the animals are being brought to government “death camps” where without food, water or health care they die of starvation and disease.

According to the reports, a Chinese government campaign has told Beijing residents to beware of stray and feral cats, as they may carry disease – even attributing the spread of SARS in 2003 partially to the animals.

One result of the campaign has been mild hysteria, in one case two concerned kindergarten teachers were so afraid of potential illness reaching their students that they killed six stray felines by beating them to death with sticks.

Animal activists say Beijing residents are abandoning their animals in the streets for fear of possible contamination from the diseases the government claims felines carry.

Animal rights groups in the country have begun speaking out against the 'clean-up' but due to fear of reprisal are limited in their ability to protest.

In all, an estimated 500,000 felines are said to have been culled by the government.

Government officials assert that people can adopt the cats they round up from any of the 12 pounds located throughout the city, but animal activists claim the facilities are “almost impossible to get inside.”

One group adopted 30 cats from one such compound, but reported that within days, half the felines died due to diseases.

“These cats are being left to die. It is very humane,” said Yan Qi, founder of the aforementioned rescue group.

According to another rescuer, disease in the pounds spreads quickly because the animals are kept in tiny cages and in very tight proximity to one another.

Since adopting the sick animals, Yan’s group has been banned from entering the pounds.

“We have tried to negotiate with the government to stop the round-ups and to introduce cut-price neutering services so that people can afford to keep their pets but they won’t listen,” she said. “They are not thinking about the cats. They just want to get the quickest results in the quickest way possible, by clearing as many cats from the city as they can.”

According to former doctor and current cat caretaker, 80 year-old Hu Yuan, many of the cats are also being sent to southern Chinese city of Guangzhou – known for serving meat from dogs and cats and other exotic animals.

Cleaning up cats isn’t the government’s only recent tactic to improve the city’s appearance in the days leading up to the games. To ease smog, polluting factories will be shut down, but only for the duration of the events.

Subway fares will be reduced to keep riders off polluting buses, and homeless people are being given rail passes and encouraged to return to their home cities.

Taxi drivers are being taught simple greetings in English as part of a courtesy campaign aimed at teaching Beijing’s notoriously “grumpy” residents to be polite.

I hope this will never happens again. the cats need help to recover from those sickness. if they are left to die more will die to the next cats because they are not controlling the disease. the only way they are going to get rid of the cats sickness is to treats them as soon as possible. leaving them to die will not solve the problems.

I think that these animals should be caught in cages and found good homes, even if it means shipping them to other states. of course after they would be giving their needed shots.
Maybe they should be more responsible and have their pets fixed to not keep producing.
I just hope they can find a better way to handle this situation.

God Bless
Kim

Shipping them elsewhere- to other countries or other provinces in China- may sound like a good idea, but even in the US, where animals are treated better than almost anywhere else in the world, we have far too many cats that already need homes without importing more. I wish all cats could find a loving home, but that is not the reality of the world we live in. Spaying and neutering is very important- I agree. However, in a country where most people make less than $1 a day, it's not likely they have disposable income for spaying. That's why international animal welfare groups are so important, and supporting them is one positive action we can take in response to this heartbreaking story.

I say that they should all be trapped in small cages and left to die without food or water, and then they will see just how humane this process really is.

That is a terrible thing to say!!! What does it say about *your* humanity when you wish that kind of cruelty on another human being? Your solution to the problem does nothing to help the cats, and only creates even more problems. Why don't you channel some of that zeal to more constructive endeavours, like supporting international animal welfare groups, such as IFAW, that can effectively lobby for change? Hatred is not the answer.

If you really mean what you said, how is your inhumanity any worse than theirs? Furthermore, it is important to take in any information with a filter of critical thinking. I assume you are referring to where the story "quoted" Yan Qi as saying “These cats are being left to die. It is very humane.” If you read this article with an engaged mind, it doesn't take a lot to realize that this is likely a misquote or typo- Yan Qi is from the rescue group who is opposed to this action by the government, and undoubtedly said it is very INhumane. It's important to think before you act, or before you speak (or type). People should be accountable not only for their actions, as the the government officials who enacted this abhorrent policy are accountable for it, but also for your words. Words have power, and especially when posting a comment where anybody can read it, you need to think about what you're saying, and the implications thereof. In general, people need need to talk less, think more, and strive for understanding in all things.

That's sick, wrong, and inhumane on sooooo many levels. It's just so sad that the government there is basically saying that they don't have time for them, so off with their heads. They are also treating them like they're inanimate objects without feelings and cleaning them up off the streets like they're used gum.

OMG! i started bawling when i read this.....how could they be so cruel? leave innocent cats to starve to death or by diesease. what is their problem? the government has sick minds. and kindergarten-emphasis on KINDERGARTEN teachers beating six cats to death? some example for five year olds. why can't they remove the cats humanely? like spaying or neutering or maybe even exporting them to another place? is there any other way of putting them down then STARVING them and keeping them in tight, cramped cages that spread disease? but then again, i would rather die than have to experience that.

Just another reason to boycot the Olympics this year. They shouldn't be held in China for many reasons and this is just another. Why don't they try PROPERLy educating their citizens and have spay/neuter clinics. At the very least humanely euthanize these strays

I am so disapointed in our world today where a government can get away with treating animals this way and that its citizens will let there government do it. They can afford to host the olympics but can 't afford to find a humane way to fix the over populas of felines? I am shocked that Americans support the olympics being held in a country that is so cruel to its animals. This is disturbing and so very sad.

This is not a government of, for and by the people, like we have. It's a very controlling, harsh government that allows no dissention with out serious repercussions. The people don't "let" the government do anything; they have no say. And, frankly, life is hard enough for the average citizen who lives on less than $1 a day with out taking the very big risk of standing up to the government. Even so, Yan Qi and his rescue group are doing what they can, and we should recognize them as true animal heroes.
I, too, am surprised that the Olympics are being held there, but the Olympics are an International event, not an American one. By participating rather than boycotting, perhaps our representatives can have a positive influence on the people they encounter, and encourage small changes that are the start to much needed wide spread changes. Let's look for the positive possibilities in this far from perfect Olympic setting.

This is horrible! Starvation/dehydration is a horrible death, not to mention dying from disease that could have been prevented.

Spay & neuter is the answer but unfortunately in a country where animals are not valued - I fear that this will not be considered as it takes money and time.

I agree that it is disheartening to realize that the Chinese government is making no serious attempt to realistically deal with their stray pet over-population. If China truly wants to be considered part of the global economy and not just another "third world" country, then the government had better start providing low-cost government-subsidized spay/neuter programs, instead of merely trying to hide their problems with inhumane and ultimately futile tactics. I hope every foreign visitor to the 2008 Olympics has a close encounter with a four-footed rat or two. Maybe then the two-footed rats in the Chinese government will "re-think" this cruel and heartless program.

They've never heard of capturing/ spaying/ neutering, then re-releasing these cats? If they are diseased, it's too bad they have to be put down. But mostly this sounds like mass paranoia. Teachers beating cats to death with clubs??!! What the heck kind of example is that for their young, impressionable students?

I can't believe that the Olympics are being held there. I think that we should write and boycot the businesses that are Olympic sponsors. This certainly illustrates tht you can judge a society by the way that it treats its children and its animals. China's disregard of the pain of its people from oppression is linked to its disregard for the torture of its animals. These actions come as no surprise.

China's views to this problem is very different from our western views. To them, a cat is no different to a duck or a fish. For the Olympics, they are going to win at all costs, no matter what the world thinks of them.
With all the cats gone, the rats are going to come out to play. :)

What can I say ... this is one of the most shocking stories I've read in awhile. My suggestion is that we all forward this article to fellow animal lovers and become a collective voice of opposition to the inhumane treatment of cats by the Chinese government. Perhaps if they are aware of the bad PR they are getting in the states and the impact that will have on American tourism at the Olympics, they may change their tune.

I'm sorry but china is stupid, the only reason why the cats are get illness is because people are not taking care of them and getting their shots. And if u abandon the cats and put them in one area with out food and water they are bound to die of illness because they are getting sick and causes them to get diseases. Duh!!! china they need to be taught how to take care of the over populated cats by getting them fixed and getting their shots. DUH!!! I hope this gets taken care of very quickly.

Yes, we should be very glad we live in country that allows the free flow of information, unlike in China where everything the people hear is strictly controlled by the government. In addition, the average citizen lives on less than $1 a day, and has no extra money to spend on pets for things like spaying or neutering and extra veterinary care. We live in such a different environment that it seems inconceivable to us that such government propaganda would be believed, but we are allowed and encouraged to question the government. We can't criticize all of the people of China for the government's action unless we understand what life is really like in China. Condemnation does not help anything; working to increase our understanding of the world and having compassion for all people will be a start to making the world a better place for all living beings. The Chinese government certainly has many problems and is very wrong in many areas, but let's not blame the all Chinese citizens for what they cannot control.

I don't know if it's so much education as a matter of economics. A lot of people just don't have expendable money, and while they may want the companionship of a dog/cat, they may not have the means to afford everything that WE can afford and provide to our pets. I doubt very much that the government offers low-cost S&N programs to pet owners.

This is horrible that they are rounding up cats and performing mass exterminations!! Instead of simply finding a "quick fix" to make things appear a little nicer for the Olymipics, perhaps they should try to find a permanent more humane solution to the problem. I'm sure visitors for the Olympic Games won't appreciate knowing that cats were exterminated on their behalf just to make the city cleaner. I don't agree with this at all.

Income from the Olympics is not "ours" to loose. The Olympics, contrary to seeming popular belief around here, is not an American thing- it is an international event. Also, the government is to blame, not the entire country. There are many many good, conscientious citizens of China who we must not condemn along with the government that allows no dissention from the citizens.
If you feel strongly about boycotting the Olympics, that's fine- but send a letter to the IOC and Olympic sponsor to let them know of your decision, or it will be a futile act. And try not to blame all Chinese citizens for the wrongs of their oppressive government.
