China Kills Thousands of Cats as Olympics Approach

Browse News

BEIJING – In an attempt to clean-up one of the world's most populous cities before thousands of foreigners flock there for the 2008 Olympic Summer Games, China has begun carrying out the round-up, and extermination of thousands of cats.

UK newspaper Daily Mail reported that the animals are being brought to government “death camps” where without food, water or health care they die of starvation and disease.

According to the reports, a Chinese government campaign has told Beijing residents to beware of stray and feral cats, as they may carry disease – even attributing the spread of SARS in 2003 partially to the animals.

One result of the campaign has been mild hysteria, in one case two concerned kindergarten teachers were so afraid of potential illness reaching their students that they killed six stray felines by beating them to death with sticks.

Animal activists say Beijing residents are abandoning their animals in the streets for fear of possible contamination from the diseases the government claims felines carry.

Animal rights groups in the country have begun speaking out against the 'clean-up' but due to fear of reprisal are limited in their ability to protest.

In all, an estimated 500,000 felines are said to have been culled by the government.

Government officials assert that people can adopt the cats they round up from any of the 12 pounds located throughout the city, but animal activists claim the facilities are “almost impossible to get inside.”

One group adopted 30 cats from one such compound, but reported that within days, half the felines died due to diseases.

“These cats are being left to die. It is very humane,” said Yan Qi, founder of the aforementioned rescue group.

According to another rescuer, disease in the pounds spreads quickly because the animals are kept in tiny cages and in very tight proximity to one another.

Since adopting the sick animals, Yan’s group has been banned from entering the pounds.

“We have tried to negotiate with the government to stop the round-ups and to introduce cut-price neutering services so that people can afford to keep their pets but they won’t listen,” she said. “They are not thinking about the cats. They just want to get the quickest results in the quickest way possible, by clearing as many cats from the city as they can.”

According to former doctor and current cat caretaker, 80 year-old Hu Yuan, many of the cats are also being sent to southern Chinese city of Guangzhou – known for serving meat from dogs and cats and other exotic animals.

Cleaning up cats isn’t the government’s only recent tactic to improve the city’s appearance in the days leading up to the games. To ease smog, polluting factories will be shut down, but only for the duration of the events.

Subway fares will be reduced to keep riders off polluting buses, and homeless people are being given rail passes and encouraged to return to their home cities.

Taxi drivers are being taught simple greetings in English as part of a courtesy campaign aimed at teaching Beijing’s notoriously “grumpy” residents to be polite.

I am surprised China is starving them, instead of feeding them the deadly food they sent here to the US. China needs boycotted. I hope the Olympic committee is aware of the lengths China is going to for the games. This is absolutely sick and disgusting.

Just one more mark against China. First the food for pets, then the toys for kids and now they are killing cats. I agree, why are we having the olympics there? Is the Olympic committee turning another blind eye like the pair skaters?

I can't even finish reading this article. It's probably the people who are carrying the diseases than the cats. Heaven is probably a better place than China!

How cruel and senseless. This is just plain ignorance. I hope everyone boycots the olympics. Could the olympic committee try to do something about this? They are the ones that chose this city. I agree that China has had a bad track record when it comes to humane treatment of their dogs and cats.

China has never been known as a humane country...there are videos on the skinning of animals alive in the market place, cooking animals before they are dead, packing cats and dogs in cages so tight that they can't move or breathe and then drop them off trucks from heights such as 10 feet in the air before they are executed. For a culture that holds honor high, I have yet to see any of it exemplified except when it comes to celebrations and the major news media. As it appears to me, in China, appearance is everything and anything else is expendable.

Of course the US will watch all of this and never think of simply boycotting the Olympics. China is too powerful in the oil and commodities markets and owns too much US debt. Keep your eye on China. This is a country to fear and it has become more powerful than we ever expected -- and twice as ruthless. It treats its humans no better than the desperate dogs and cats.

This is what happens when pet populations are aloud to get out of control. Without spay and neuter programs readily available or the irreponsibility of pet owners. I just wish there was some other way they could handle this situation. Very sad.

Well, I think that the sick cats are a problem and should be exterminated. I do not, however, think that leaving them to die without food or water is very humane. starvation and dehydration is no way to die. I think that possibly shooting them would be the best way to go. At 3 cents a bullet, those cats could be exterminated instantly, humanely, and realitively cheap. I would rather die from a bullet to the brain than starvation, dehydration, or desiese.

China is just horrible in its abuses to its poeple and animals. That si just horrible. There are more humane ways to kill the cats - too - starvation - that is just horrible. I have no idea how a country like this can be allowed to host the Olympics at all in the first place. Here in NY there is a huge movement to protest and ignore the Olympics that will be take place in China - mostly from the Chinese that have come here to escape the opression and poverty they had in China.

Unbelievable!!! Why don't countries (like ours) speak up about this condition???
When spaying and neutering has been offered as an alternative this just seems
crazy. This really blows my mind.

Unfortunately, boycotting the Olympics punishes more than China. What about all of those international athletes who have trained their entire lives for this one moment? They might never have the chance to compete at another Olympics ever again. I don't know if this is a good solution.

I think the athletes should still compete, I just don't think tourists should attend. That's the form of boycott I had in mind. But I also believe we shouldn't just stand by and accept this for the sake of the olympic games, either.

This is a terrible story! I guess the lives of 500,000 cats (potentially many more to perish) are worth less than making the city look 'presentable' for the Olympics.

What is really sad here is that no matter what kind of publicity they get over this it won't stop. Their government doesn't see anything wrong with doing this and their purpose is to make people think that they are a society that is much like our Western societies. Out of sight, out of mind seems to be what they are aiming for. Several comments have been made about not buying Chinese goods. You might want to just take a look around and consider where a large portion of the everyday products in your home were made. Go to the CPSC website and sign up for the recall list and then when it starts coming you can tell what country the recalled products come from. One name stands way above the rest - China.

This breaks my heart and there has to be a better solution. Obviously, they've got a huge problem with feral and generally homeless cats to begin with, but to sentence them to a horrible death because you want to put on a "good face" for visitors is disgusting. I think we should start a boycott and encourage people not to go and support the games when they are being held in a country that would allow this. If they are so concerned about the spread of disease, they shouldn't even have the games there. Killing these animals will not prevent it. This makes me sick.

Pathetic the lengths they'll go to for the Olympics but not at all surprising. I don't think this is really affecting them as much as the article claims. It is an every day occurence for them to buy dogs, cats, snakes, monkeys, etc., etc. at markets for consumption. It's disgusting but they have no empathy for animals.

I remember when my Dad would tell me stories about when he was in the service. He said overseas that some of the countries are in horrible shape and we are talking over 55 years or more ago. And he would tell me that is it not much better now. (Daddy has been gone a few years now), but he was a well educated man and kept up on world events.

He told me the food was so bad, that most of the sailers came back to the ship to eat.

What a vicious, cruel campaign. I don't even want to watch the olympics now! I realize other cultures don't love animals the way ours does, but--come on! This type of cruelty is inexcusable. Why didn't the government there do something about the burgeoning cat population to begin with. They control everything and everybody else over there!
