China Kills Thousands of Cats as Olympics Approach

Browse News

BEIJING – In an attempt to clean-up one of the world's most populous cities before thousands of foreigners flock there for the 2008 Olympic Summer Games, China has begun carrying out the round-up, and extermination of thousands of cats.

UK newspaper Daily Mail reported that the animals are being brought to government “death camps” where without food, water or health care they die of starvation and disease.

According to the reports, a Chinese government campaign has told Beijing residents to beware of stray and feral cats, as they may carry disease – even attributing the spread of SARS in 2003 partially to the animals.

One result of the campaign has been mild hysteria, in one case two concerned kindergarten teachers were so afraid of potential illness reaching their students that they killed six stray felines by beating them to death with sticks.

Animal activists say Beijing residents are abandoning their animals in the streets for fear of possible contamination from the diseases the government claims felines carry.

Animal rights groups in the country have begun speaking out against the 'clean-up' but due to fear of reprisal are limited in their ability to protest.

In all, an estimated 500,000 felines are said to have been culled by the government.

Government officials assert that people can adopt the cats they round up from any of the 12 pounds located throughout the city, but animal activists claim the facilities are “almost impossible to get inside.”

One group adopted 30 cats from one such compound, but reported that within days, half the felines died due to diseases.

“These cats are being left to die. It is very humane,” said Yan Qi, founder of the aforementioned rescue group.

According to another rescuer, disease in the pounds spreads quickly because the animals are kept in tiny cages and in very tight proximity to one another.

Since adopting the sick animals, Yan’s group has been banned from entering the pounds.

“We have tried to negotiate with the government to stop the round-ups and to introduce cut-price neutering services so that people can afford to keep their pets but they won’t listen,” she said. “They are not thinking about the cats. They just want to get the quickest results in the quickest way possible, by clearing as many cats from the city as they can.”

According to former doctor and current cat caretaker, 80 year-old Hu Yuan, many of the cats are also being sent to southern Chinese city of Guangzhou – known for serving meat from dogs and cats and other exotic animals.

Cleaning up cats isn’t the government’s only recent tactic to improve the city’s appearance in the days leading up to the games. To ease smog, polluting factories will be shut down, but only for the duration of the events.

Subway fares will be reduced to keep riders off polluting buses, and homeless people are being given rail passes and encouraged to return to their home cities.

Taxi drivers are being taught simple greetings in English as part of a courtesy campaign aimed at teaching Beijing’s notoriously “grumpy” residents to be polite.

Considering China's Human Rights record I don't know how we could expect them to treat their animals better than their people?

Not only does China not care about their animals (Aug, 2006 killing over 50,000 dogs) and now the cats, but they also took farm land from farmers to develope the area for the Olympics. We are talking thousands of farmers whose livelihood now gone. And the China Government does not care.

The China Gov does care about image. They want folks to see Beijing as a city that is developing in society, democracy and human rights.

Personally, I think they are just full of it.

I know it is too late for the Olympic Committee to pull the games from there. However, I say boycott the sponsors, boycott China, but do try and support the athletics. They work so hard for this chance and for some it will be their one and only chance. China does not have to get our money even if we support our teams.

China is trying very hard to join the largest players on the world stage like the US, Canada and the EU. They seem compelled to run roughshod over who or what ever gets in their way. Their 3 gorges dam is destroying habitat, displacing ancient peoples and destroying archaeological sites. These poor feral cats and the farmers in your example are just in the way.

Terrible that they couldn't spay/neuter years ago to prevent so many homeless cats. I'm sure this will mean a lot of pets get killed by "accident". So tragic.

This is just horrible. Is there even any real threat to cats giving people SARS? That is not mentioned. If there is, would there not be a simple shot for these cats so they won't? Or is this just a horrible way to scare people into thinking the best they can do for their family is to get rit of all the cats?
And WHY why not put these cats down right away instead of putting them in shelters if they don't want to adopt them out? That would just be a lot more humane. NO, I don't understand this story, I have more questions that they don't answer in that article. Does no one there ask? Just sounds like a lot of ignorant people taking charge and more ignorant people just following orders. There is NO WAY I would give up my cats!

Another case where spay and nueter is so important. however, you would think that if the health of the animals and the people is in jeopardy due to so many feral cats that the government would have figured out a solution before now - just because the Olympics are coming, what about their own people and animals?

this isn't surprising coming from the #1 HUMAN rights violator in the world. if they (meaning the government) don't hold human life in high regard, why would they care about even humanely euthanizing animals? there's apparently also a push in beijing to get people to stop defecating on the streets. if that doesn't spread disease, i don't know what does.

The only way to effect change in China is to stop buying Chinese products and then to e-mail the Chinese Embassy and tell them you are doing that. If enough people do that then it will effect their economy.

This is horrible. Yet given the relatively low value placed on human life in China, it isn't a big leap to see that the value of animal life could be this low. As an animal welfare volunteer who has been affiliated with the Save-A-Sato Foundation in Puerto Rico, I can say this kind of treatment is rampant in certain parts of the world. Let's raise our voices in protest and continue to save the animals that we can reach, both inside and outside of the United States.

At least the gov in India listened when people became upset over a plan to poison stray dogs... the Chinese govt. will never listen to their people or other nations.. they are an over populated country that is actually having alot of problems.. I think an animals life is so far down the totem pole that they will go with the easy solution..

however I never buy anything that is made in China.

This is such horror. I cannot believe how their govenment handles these types of situations. The animals are being brought to government “death camps” where without food, water or health care they die of starvation and disease. Can they get away with this?

Ummm... the reason why they drown baby girls is because they're only limited to one child and so if their first born is a girl, some Chinese people will drown them so they will have another chance to have a baby boy. Some! Not all...

This is appalling. Although with the way they treat humans and all the tainted products being sent to the US why should anyone be surprised they would do this. There needs to be sanctions against China for a lot of reasons, this is just one to be added to that. And another reason we should NOT be getting products form that country.
