China Kills Thousands of Cats as Olympics Approach

Browse News

BEIJING – In an attempt to clean-up one of the world's most populous cities before thousands of foreigners flock there for the 2008 Olympic Summer Games, China has begun carrying out the round-up, and extermination of thousands of cats.

UK newspaper Daily Mail reported that the animals are being brought to government “death camps” where without food, water or health care they die of starvation and disease.

According to the reports, a Chinese government campaign has told Beijing residents to beware of stray and feral cats, as they may carry disease – even attributing the spread of SARS in 2003 partially to the animals.

One result of the campaign has been mild hysteria, in one case two concerned kindergarten teachers were so afraid of potential illness reaching their students that they killed six stray felines by beating them to death with sticks.

Animal activists say Beijing residents are abandoning their animals in the streets for fear of possible contamination from the diseases the government claims felines carry.

Animal rights groups in the country have begun speaking out against the 'clean-up' but due to fear of reprisal are limited in their ability to protest.

In all, an estimated 500,000 felines are said to have been culled by the government.

Government officials assert that people can adopt the cats they round up from any of the 12 pounds located throughout the city, but animal activists claim the facilities are “almost impossible to get inside.”

One group adopted 30 cats from one such compound, but reported that within days, half the felines died due to diseases.

“These cats are being left to die. It is very humane,” said Yan Qi, founder of the aforementioned rescue group.

According to another rescuer, disease in the pounds spreads quickly because the animals are kept in tiny cages and in very tight proximity to one another.

Since adopting the sick animals, Yan’s group has been banned from entering the pounds.

“We have tried to negotiate with the government to stop the round-ups and to introduce cut-price neutering services so that people can afford to keep their pets but they won’t listen,” she said. “They are not thinking about the cats. They just want to get the quickest results in the quickest way possible, by clearing as many cats from the city as they can.”

According to former doctor and current cat caretaker, 80 year-old Hu Yuan, many of the cats are also being sent to southern Chinese city of Guangzhou – known for serving meat from dogs and cats and other exotic animals.

Cleaning up cats isn’t the government’s only recent tactic to improve the city’s appearance in the days leading up to the games. To ease smog, polluting factories will be shut down, but only for the duration of the events.

Subway fares will be reduced to keep riders off polluting buses, and homeless people are being given rail passes and encouraged to return to their home cities.

Taxi drivers are being taught simple greetings in English as part of a courtesy campaign aimed at teaching Beijing’s notoriously “grumpy” residents to be polite.

as bad as it is, the Chinese will refuse any interference from other countries, telling us to mind our own business.... and they will be successfull as long as there biggest trading partner are the US......
We want things inexpensive/cheap, we get them from China, and that is what we get for it...

The USA Government implicitly approves of this because of their involvement. Any Chinese abuses are aided and abetted by the USA.

They should have at least killed the cats humanely, by euthination. Instead they are making these poor animals suffer. I can't stand this story. It is just horable.

im sitting literally in tears,im a huge animal lover and the chinese govt, makes me sich how could they do this to innocent creatures, who by the way have just as much right to live as we do,as the late great gandhi once said
the greatness of a nation, and its moral progress, can be judged,by the way its animals are treated
to me this quote says it all

cats are not companion animals over there. They are food in some cases. I don't like it either but we can't change how another country does things. Its out of our control. Our politicians will continue being buddies with these people regardless of how the anmerican citizens feel.

Just because they treat their animals likes crap, doesn't mean its undeveloped. It's the government. They have people there that want to end this, they're just afraid because the government will put them in jail if they speak their opinion.

The Olympic Committee is dealing with something huge. It expects countries to build all kinds of infrastructures for its games. I would love to know in what way the Olympics helps countries in the end. Don't many of them go into debt?

And this is where we've sent our industry, and from where we import heaven only knows how many billions of dollars in goods!! Their culture is cruel to animals across the board, and as far as I'm concerned, our government has sold their soul to the devil. (And sold all of us out as well!)

This is really sad and shows the need for humane animal shelters, pet adoption programs, and neutering programs there. They want the Olympics to be a spectacular showcase for their country, but instead their preparations for the Olympics are showcasing a lot of social problems that need to be properly addressed.

I'll be boycotting the Olympics this time 'round, thank you. The only good thing that came of Beijing being the host is the fact that the cruel and money-mongering ways of it's government has become apparrent to anyone who cares to read the international news. To any American Olympist reading: I hope you carefully consider the health of your soul and your conscience before you present our colors on Chinese soil. We're no better than they are in several ways, but we have the RIGHT to speak and the RIGHT to boycott. Use yours.

I understand where the government is coming from and trying to help lower the stay cat population and prevent the spread of illness. But there is so many other ways of helping the problem. Now they have created panic. Its just really sad.

But here's a question for you. WHY did they wait until the Olympics were coming to their country to do this? Did this problem just happen overnite? Obviously if they were concerned about the pet population they would of had programs in place long before it was ever decided that the olympics would be held there.

They didn't wait until the Olympics to inhumanely kill these cats. They've been doing this for a very, very long time. They're just enforcing it on a greater level because of the Olympics. If you want to see the true horror of it, then search it on youtube.com, but if you're faint in heart, I would avoid looking it up then.

and why are we having the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing??! This is just wrong on so may counts - first they are creating chaos when it is not needed by telling people that these cats "could have" SARS, second by allowing people to just toss their cats out and third (the worst) they are basically starving these animals to death by not taking care of them...someone somewhere really needs to step up the plate..

Once again, this country displays it's ignorance of rights. Control of the human population in various aspects of everyday life is well known. Now, faced with the international spotlight soon to be focused on them, China again reacts by taking away the right of a living thing to survive.

that is terrible. the chinese government is clearly not the smartest because they're just creating the diseases cats spread to each other by placing them in those pounds. If they really wanted to "humanely" dispose of them, they should euthanize them; not leave them to starve and die of disease. idiots.

Somehow, I think they are missing out on something. If they want a cleaner city, what will the increase in rat and mouse population do? Cats really to serve a purpose. if each cat caught just one mouse a day--500,000 cats would mean millions of vermin.
