China Kills Thousands of Cats as Olympics Approach

Browse News

BEIJING – In an attempt to clean-up one of the world's most populous cities before thousands of foreigners flock there for the 2008 Olympic Summer Games, China has begun carrying out the round-up, and extermination of thousands of cats.

UK newspaper Daily Mail reported that the animals are being brought to government “death camps” where without food, water or health care they die of starvation and disease.

According to the reports, a Chinese government campaign has told Beijing residents to beware of stray and feral cats, as they may carry disease – even attributing the spread of SARS in 2003 partially to the animals.

One result of the campaign has been mild hysteria, in one case two concerned kindergarten teachers were so afraid of potential illness reaching their students that they killed six stray felines by beating them to death with sticks.

Animal activists say Beijing residents are abandoning their animals in the streets for fear of possible contamination from the diseases the government claims felines carry.

Animal rights groups in the country have begun speaking out against the 'clean-up' but due to fear of reprisal are limited in their ability to protest.

In all, an estimated 500,000 felines are said to have been culled by the government.

Government officials assert that people can adopt the cats they round up from any of the 12 pounds located throughout the city, but animal activists claim the facilities are “almost impossible to get inside.”

One group adopted 30 cats from one such compound, but reported that within days, half the felines died due to diseases.

“These cats are being left to die. It is very humane,” said Yan Qi, founder of the aforementioned rescue group.

According to another rescuer, disease in the pounds spreads quickly because the animals are kept in tiny cages and in very tight proximity to one another.

Since adopting the sick animals, Yan’s group has been banned from entering the pounds.

“We have tried to negotiate with the government to stop the round-ups and to introduce cut-price neutering services so that people can afford to keep their pets but they won’t listen,” she said. “They are not thinking about the cats. They just want to get the quickest results in the quickest way possible, by clearing as many cats from the city as they can.”

According to former doctor and current cat caretaker, 80 year-old Hu Yuan, many of the cats are also being sent to southern Chinese city of Guangzhou – known for serving meat from dogs and cats and other exotic animals.

Cleaning up cats isn’t the government’s only recent tactic to improve the city’s appearance in the days leading up to the games. To ease smog, polluting factories will be shut down, but only for the duration of the events.

Subway fares will be reduced to keep riders off polluting buses, and homeless people are being given rail passes and encouraged to return to their home cities.

Taxi drivers are being taught simple greetings in English as part of a courtesy campaign aimed at teaching Beijing’s notoriously “grumpy” residents to be polite.

So incredibly sad. Maybe the government should be a bit more responsibility and alter their animals to avoid the population getting out of control rather than killing them once it's too late. That's a disgrace.

This is disgusting..and totally ineffective! China doesn't help it's international reputation by behaving this way. Anyone who deals with rescue knows that "extermination" isn't a solution! Also, the fact that they aren't even being humane, they're just allowing the animals to starve...AHHHH!!! What is wrong with people?! How can so many people in one spot be okay with this?! I think this is why I try NOT to read the news...AHHH!!!!

Killing cats, hiring a "cuter" kid to lip sync during opening ceremonies, and allegedly falsifying passports of minor gymnasts. I'm really glad to know that China did all this to "help" the image of their country during the Olympics.

They came out looking beautiful, didn't they?

I'm currently an American living in China as an expat. After seeing this article for the first time today, I talked to my local Chinese friends about this. They were all unaware of this, as well as unaware of the dog killings last year, as well as unaware of a lot of things regarding the Tiananmen massacre. They are aware that there are media discrepancies in China controlled by the government and ashamed of this event. I comforted them and confided that I was ashamed of America too, waterboarding, tortures, corruption, and more. But that as the level of the awareness and the people slowly improve, as the country right now doesn't even value human life, much less any other life, things will change with progress. Thanks for mentioning Alley Cat Allies, I didn't know of that site and will go there to see how I can help, and how I can adopt a cat in China. And if I leave, apply for American kitty citizenship for it, or whatever paperwork/funds is necessary to keep it with me.

I am so glad that you are letting people of China know what is going on one by one. Education is the key. Animal abuse is going on in every part of the world, and we as animal lovers need to act and not just talk about it. Alley Cat Allies is a wonderful organization which is trying to help cats , also you can also go to PETA to sign their petitions to help animals everywhere and not just in China. The more animal lovers adopt animals in China the faster the outlook on animal abuse will change. The more people look at animals as the pet they love, the more people will be outraged with the abuse, and will not stand for it. You can also check out story on dogs in China here on zootoo it has even more info. Like I said before education is the key, and more people you let know about the what is going on, the more people will act to help.

I’m sorry some of you were confused by what I was trying to say. Lets get it on record that I do not blame the whole country of China for what is going on with the cats there. I do blame The Government and the people involved. When I said they are capable of educating them self’s I was talking again about finding better way of controlling the cat population in general, by the government. What is being done to the poor animals is inhumane. Those cats and kittens did not ask to be born there, nor did they ask to be tortured. I think the whole story was blown out of proportion by some that assumed that everyone was blaming all the people in China, and I found this not to be true. By rereading all the posts I found no one blaming all of the people, just the ones involved.
We cannot be so quick judge other countries and its citizens, just because their way of life is different from the one we live. Someone said in their post that she stands up for the people that have no voice, no matter where someone lives – THEY HAVE VOICE, it just depends how they use it. We also have to be careful when we say that they are suppressed people. Suppressed according to whom? The only people that can say that is the people that lived there, we cannot voice our opinion on something we don’t know. We all blame the government of China, for the way they treat their citizens, animals, and so on, yet we all will be shopping sometime this week, and buying items made in China, which in fact is supporting the gov. we are so against. Is there something wrong with this picture, or is it me?
The next remark I found foolish is that someone said that most people in China only make $1 per day. We cannot compare what we make to what they make – it’s a different country. Their way of life is different, different prices, different expenses. Now let take look at our way of life. Yes we make more per month, but we also spend more, we have to pay for mortgage, car payment, health ins. life ins., this tax and that tax, I think most of you get the point. Its not what someone makes, it’s what is left at the end of the month. We think we have freedom, yet we are prisoners of our own depth, and the growing depth of out gov.

I understand having to clean up the city, but leaving cats to die by starvation is not the answer. If they NEED to clean up the city (which I understand the number of stray felines is enormous there), then at least do it in a humane method like the US does with stray, unwanted pets.

China does not believe in human rights for its citizens, why should we expect it to care about animals. Plus in some areas of China they eat dogs and cats. Also they use their fur on clothing for export.
In a better world, people would be allowed to adopt spayed/neuter cats. Those cats that were ill to begin with or unadoptable would be given a painless injection to send them to the Rainbow Bridge.
But we are talking about China, where what the bureaucrats want come ahead of everything, including people and animals. The people have no rights.

There has been such an uproar over so many things about this yrs olympics. I dont know that I care to watch or have any part of it. Poor, poor animals. Life is so dispensable to some people and it is very sad. Starving and being sick has to be the worst way to die. How very sad.

I think it's fair to say that the government is lacking comon sense to control the cat population here. Why they would treat them so inhumanely is somthing I can't answer but am appalled by. They want a quick fix to their problem the cheapest way possible. Wish everyone would boycott the Olympics but I don't see that happeneing. With the money they will more than likely bring in hosting the games you would think they would have been able to spend a little to spay/neuter and shelter or find shelter, till the games are over. Greed on the governments part.

Comments like yours really display ignorance. First of all, this is a governmental policy in one city. By far, the vast majority of Chinese citizens have no culpability in this, yet your comment seems to condemn them all. Secondly, you need to understand that people like the teachers mentioned in this story have lived in a repressive, highly controlled environment, where they are not encouraged or even allowed to question the government, and have no free flow of information. It is not like in the US, where we are allowed, and encouraged to think for ourselves. It is not surprising that they believe the government when they are told that cats pose a serious health risk to them, their families and children in their classes. While their actions are certainly not right, the government is far more culpable in this matter. And we should also remember that while it is fine to condemn the actions, we should refrain from condemning the people themselves. Until you have a real understanding of them and their lives and culture, you are not in a position to fairly stand in judgment of the Chinese citizens.
And lastly, while the government is certainly in the wrong for the stray cat policy, they are doing an admirable job in the extremely difficult circumstances of the wake of the devastating earthquake. Let's remember how poorly our own government did in the face of natural disasters within our borders. Far more people were affected in this disaster than in Katrina, and the survivors are scattered over a vast area covering remote, rural, hard to reach communities. Rather than criticizing, maybe you could do something positive and support an aid organization such as World Vision.
Try taking some positive action rather than simply judging an entire country. Hatred, ignorance and disgust never result in positive changes in the world; however, compassion, understanding and empathy can make our world a much better place for us all.

I never knew "communist" was a "dirty" word, only a term to refer to a socioeconomic ideology. The way in which it was used in your sentence made me think of the crazy witch hunts of the McCarthy era in the 1950s all over again.

But seriously, if you are an avid reader of Gini's posts and have followed them through the months, you will realize that she is one of the least harsh ZooTooers--she is one of the very few who stand up for everyone and everything, even people who are "different" from her and have absolutely no connection to her. You don't have to look like her (ie., white Caucasian), hold the same passport/citizenship as her (ie., American), speak the same language as her, even have to have met her for her to come in defence of you for the simple fact that you are another fellow HUMAN BEING. She has strongly and consistently tried to make other ZooTooers feel compassion where there is none. Kudos to Gini for having the bravery to stand up to the pack mentality that is ZooToo and defend people who aren't even present on this messageboard to defend themselves!!!

I understand what you are saying but on the other hand as humans we should be able to distinguish right from wrong, right? No matter what country or culture someone lives in I am sure they understand inflicting suffering if to animal or human is wrong. Not providing food, water, or medical help to any living thing is inhumane. This is 2008 I'm sure this people don't live in caves, they have TVs, internet, books and they are more that capable to educate them self's. THERE IS NO EXCUSE, and the nice way does not always work. All I know I will not support a country that inflicts suffering on animals. I personally will NOT buy anything that is made in China.

"While their actions are certainly not right..."; "...it is fine to condemn the actions..."
Does that sound like I am approving of animal cruelty? I have repeatedly said that the treatment of these cats is WRONG. It's a long way to go, however, from condemning the actions of a small percentage of China to condemning the every one of the 1.3 billion person population. And I even say that we should not condemn every one of those who did take wrong actions (like the teachers) with out understanding the circumstances leading to their actions, and the mindset they in which they have been encompassed their whole lives. You said "they have TVs, internet, books and they are more that capable to educate them self's", but as people who have lived in Communist countries would tell you, the government controls even these outlets of information. And many do not have access to these outlets. Perhaps it is you who needs to educate yourself.
When it comes to compassion for our fellow human beings, even the ones who have taken wrong actions, (and who hasn't take a wrong action), there is no reasoning away our obligation to try to understand their motivation. No actions take place in a void; there is always a context. We must see that context because when it comes to compassion, there is no "other hand". It is always the right thing.

After what China did to Tibet this year and what they continue to do to our endangered species and animals in general just makes me sick.

Leaving cats to die is HUMANE??????????????? No living creature human or animal deserves to die in that fashion. I hate to use the analogy, but this sounds an awful lot like the reasoning behind genocide during many of the conflicts throughout history. They are not human so it is ok. That is faulty reasoning.

When you read the article thoughtfully, it doesn't take much to realize that Yan Qi, who is the head of the rescue group trying to save these cats, may have been quoted HERE as saying "These cats are being left to die. It is very humane", undoubtedly has been misquoted, as he is doing everything he can- even risking severe consequences to speaking out against the government, to stop this action. In other articles on this story, he is quoted as saying it is very INhumane. I am sure he would be absolutely horrified to read this article and know that so many people believe he said it is humane.
You are right, though- no living thing deserves such a terribly cruel death. It is appalling that the Chinese government is trying to take care of its problem in this way, and there is no excuse. But you are probably hesitant to draw the genocide analogy because you know in your heart that there is a difference between this and genocide, and know instinctively how insensitive that analogy really is.
This is a terrible situation- I am not downplaying that at all. I am fine with you calling it mass murder. Genocide, however, rises to an entirely separate level of horror.

In China the citizens are not allowed to have any "outside" influences on their culture. What they read and watch are mandated by the government. It is sad that they are driven to "hysteria" due to lack of knowledge. Does this surprise you? Coming from a country where the number of children a person can have is limited???

Seems like they have some major issues over there and the only reason they want to do anything about it now is because they are hosting the Olympics. Maybe if China wouldn't have allowed this in the first place, they would have an easier time with relocating the animals and getting them spayed or nutered.

If China's oppressive government thinks they are showcasing their country for the Olympics in a positive light, they are sadly mistaken. More and more stories are coming out about their serious internal problems, such as their nasty air pollution, treatment of Tibetans, treatment of factory employees, and now this story about cat genocide. Remember when the Chinese government only allowed dog owners to have one dog, and that dog had to no bigger than a certain size. The people were trying to hide their bigger dogs for fear that they would be killed too. The trouble is now China is controlling our economy and the value of the dollar, and also the world's economy. That's probably why Bush is still planning to go there during the Olympics to kiss up to them.

I agree completely that the government of China is extremely repressive, and this action is absolutely abhorrent. However, it really bothers me when people call actions such as this "genocide". Even if you include animals in the definition, the government is not trying to wipe all cats out of existence, and that is what it takes to be genocide. Especially in April, the anniversary of the genocide on Rwanda, it is very insensitive to use the word inappropriately. Using "genocide" to describe this only serves to cheapen the word, to lessen it's impact, and to desensitize people to horror that should flood over people upon hearing it. It lessens the horror of the fact that true genocide is real, it has happened, and IS happening TODAY, and we all must never loose the utter horror of that, or cheapen it by applying the word to a situation that is certainly mass murder, but clearly NOT genocide.

Yes, loosing these lives is horrible, but it is still NOT genocide! Call it mass murder- that's applicable. But this situation does not rise to the appalling level of genocide. You could only make that comparison if you have no real experience with the true utter horror genocide. Please understand that it is very insensitive to make that comparison.
