China Kills Thousands of Cats as Olympics Approach

Browse News

BEIJING – In an attempt to clean-up one of the world's most populous cities before thousands of foreigners flock there for the 2008 Olympic Summer Games, China has begun carrying out the round-up, and extermination of thousands of cats.

UK newspaper Daily Mail reported that the animals are being brought to government “death camps” where without food, water or health care they die of starvation and disease.

According to the reports, a Chinese government campaign has told Beijing residents to beware of stray and feral cats, as they may carry disease – even attributing the spread of SARS in 2003 partially to the animals.

One result of the campaign has been mild hysteria, in one case two concerned kindergarten teachers were so afraid of potential illness reaching their students that they killed six stray felines by beating them to death with sticks.

Animal activists say Beijing residents are abandoning their animals in the streets for fear of possible contamination from the diseases the government claims felines carry.

Animal rights groups in the country have begun speaking out against the 'clean-up' but due to fear of reprisal are limited in their ability to protest.

In all, an estimated 500,000 felines are said to have been culled by the government.

Government officials assert that people can adopt the cats they round up from any of the 12 pounds located throughout the city, but animal activists claim the facilities are “almost impossible to get inside.”

One group adopted 30 cats from one such compound, but reported that within days, half the felines died due to diseases.

“These cats are being left to die. It is very humane,” said Yan Qi, founder of the aforementioned rescue group.

According to another rescuer, disease in the pounds spreads quickly because the animals are kept in tiny cages and in very tight proximity to one another.

Since adopting the sick animals, Yan’s group has been banned from entering the pounds.

“We have tried to negotiate with the government to stop the round-ups and to introduce cut-price neutering services so that people can afford to keep their pets but they won’t listen,” she said. “They are not thinking about the cats. They just want to get the quickest results in the quickest way possible, by clearing as many cats from the city as they can.”

According to former doctor and current cat caretaker, 80 year-old Hu Yuan, many of the cats are also being sent to southern Chinese city of Guangzhou – known for serving meat from dogs and cats and other exotic animals.

Cleaning up cats isn’t the government’s only recent tactic to improve the city’s appearance in the days leading up to the games. To ease smog, polluting factories will be shut down, but only for the duration of the events.

Subway fares will be reduced to keep riders off polluting buses, and homeless people are being given rail passes and encouraged to return to their home cities.

Taxi drivers are being taught simple greetings in English as part of a courtesy campaign aimed at teaching Beijing’s notoriously “grumpy” residents to be polite.

I think they have to do something about the overpopulation but starving them is just not right!

Bad, bad, bad. The government should have thought about this problem much sooner and not only because the Olympics are approacing. Hopefully, the animal rights groups are going to save as many of these poor things as they can. Somebody should educate the Chinease government about how to control cat overpopulation. Ever heard about spay/neuter?:)

This is horrible and probably the least of the horrors the poor things endure in China. Not known for their human or animals rights.

It just goes to show that a country that has a hard time with human rights issues certainly has no compunction in doing things like this to the animal residents. I still wonder about the Olympic committee's choice of Beijing for a Winter Olympics.

Really a tough article to read since the animals weren't even dealt with in a humane manner. This clean-up measure to put on a good face for the Olympics was pretty disgusting.

I am still disgusted that this happened but even more disgusted that Chinese routinely eat dogs and cats -- and usually the death of these animals is incredibly cruel.

Idiots! They can spend 450million dollars to build a stadium that seats 91,000 people but couldn't build any descent shelters to help homeless animals. Now not presently being used they will begin construction of this site for stores, and shops.People were put out of their homes for this stadium to be built so why would they care about an animal? These people are as fake as their fireworks display!

This is not the first time this has happened in history. Don't we ever learn? In the middle ages, cats were considered evil or from the devil. To own a cat could get one killed for being a witch. That is, until the rodent and rat population started to grow and spread disease and plagues.

What comes around goes around eventually.

I remember hearing about all this stuff China was doing to try and appear to be a more presentable country in light of hosting the olympics.... I don't buy into any of it. I'd wager things have gone back to the way they were before and all of that was just a facade. They're not fooling anyone.

Is this a misquote?? "“These cats are being left to die. It is very humane,” said Yan Qi, founder of the aforementioned rescue group. "

They are being brought to buildings and left to starve to death? WOW. It's insane to think in some countries declawing is illegal and then in others, basically torturing animals to death is routine. So very sad.

Since China is concerned with its world image, I'm hopeful its government will get the message that it must clean up its act regarding animal treatment. Most diseases the officials are concerned about are due to people's unhealthy, crowded confining of animals, whatever the species.

Here we go again. The olympics should have been boycotted being in China. They need education on treating people humanely and animals. I try not to buy anything made there, probably by a 10 year old in a sweat shop.

We are all outraged by this story and many others-about China, yet many of us all go to places like Wal-Mart and buy "Made in China". We need to wake up and say no to "Made in China" even if it means we pay a little more for "Made in USA".

Should we expect anything else from a country that aborts baby girls in favor of boys, they need to control the population of animals by spaying an neutering, not starving them to death.

Wow. This is extreme. I can't believe something like this could happen. It is so easy to do such terrible things. Causing hysteria is insane and whoever thought of this shouldn't be in an authoritative position. The public doesn't need to go through things like this. It cause obviously more harm than good. All in the name of the great "Dog and Pony Show" Ridiculous.
