China Kills Thousands of Cats as Olympics Approach

Browse News

BEIJING – In an attempt to clean-up one of the world's most populous cities before thousands of foreigners flock there for the 2008 Olympic Summer Games, China has begun carrying out the round-up, and extermination of thousands of cats.

UK newspaper Daily Mail reported that the animals are being brought to government “death camps” where without food, water or health care they die of starvation and disease.

According to the reports, a Chinese government campaign has told Beijing residents to beware of stray and feral cats, as they may carry disease – even attributing the spread of SARS in 2003 partially to the animals.

One result of the campaign has been mild hysteria, in one case two concerned kindergarten teachers were so afraid of potential illness reaching their students that they killed six stray felines by beating them to death with sticks.

Animal activists say Beijing residents are abandoning their animals in the streets for fear of possible contamination from the diseases the government claims felines carry.

Animal rights groups in the country have begun speaking out against the 'clean-up' but due to fear of reprisal are limited in their ability to protest.

In all, an estimated 500,000 felines are said to have been culled by the government.

Government officials assert that people can adopt the cats they round up from any of the 12 pounds located throughout the city, but animal activists claim the facilities are “almost impossible to get inside.”

One group adopted 30 cats from one such compound, but reported that within days, half the felines died due to diseases.

“These cats are being left to die. It is very humane,” said Yan Qi, founder of the aforementioned rescue group.

According to another rescuer, disease in the pounds spreads quickly because the animals are kept in tiny cages and in very tight proximity to one another.

Since adopting the sick animals, Yan’s group has been banned from entering the pounds.

“We have tried to negotiate with the government to stop the round-ups and to introduce cut-price neutering services so that people can afford to keep their pets but they won’t listen,” she said. “They are not thinking about the cats. They just want to get the quickest results in the quickest way possible, by clearing as many cats from the city as they can.”

According to former doctor and current cat caretaker, 80 year-old Hu Yuan, many of the cats are also being sent to southern Chinese city of Guangzhou – known for serving meat from dogs and cats and other exotic animals.

Cleaning up cats isn’t the government’s only recent tactic to improve the city’s appearance in the days leading up to the games. To ease smog, polluting factories will be shut down, but only for the duration of the events.

Subway fares will be reduced to keep riders off polluting buses, and homeless people are being given rail passes and encouraged to return to their home cities.

Taxi drivers are being taught simple greetings in English as part of a courtesy campaign aimed at teaching Beijing’s notoriously “grumpy” residents to be polite.

How can they claim these cats were responsible for spreading disease...then turn around and eat them? This makes no sense!

Finally a government took action against the stray cat problem. Stray and feral cats cause massive ecological damage and should be eradicated. If only people in other countries do this many poor critters that cats kill can be saved. People are too soft on certain animals, protecting them while those cute animals they protect are causing others to go extinct. We need more of those round ups to protect the ecosystems.

THese people are horrible. Why anyone would respect their culture is beyond me. Many animals were lost and that is completely unexceptable.

I just read that China is struggling because we aren't buying their products, that they lost money on the Olympics and they grow such sick fish for our consu, ption (black water) that hey have to give them antibiotics to get them to our table. Can yuou think of a more disgusting country on earth. Why should I be surprised that they not only haven't figured out that spying.neutering and vaccionations are the way to go. If they would only spay and neuter homeless cats and release them with their shots, eventually they wouldn't be overrun. Or would this possibly limit their Food Source. Ugh.

I heard a commentary about how humans are the only species that take on the care of another species purely for the pleasure of their company. It seems like these Chinese rulings are reverting to the less than human version.

What a great country. With all the human rights violations why be surprised at how they treat animals? We're limited in our criticism considering the financial situation between our two countries.

The cats were the least of their worries in Beijing. When I was there the air was so dirty when you washed your face the washcloth was black. That is a bigger problem than the cats (I honestly don't recall seeing cats ever). But this isn't a complete surprise coming from the country that mowed over students with a tank during the protests.

This is so sad and although I think the Chinese people are good people, their government is just crazy. They seem to do everything for show. Don't they know people see through this kind of crapola? Well, I guess it's not that much different in Washington DC.

As if they couldn't give me another reason to dislike these people! What are we in this country suppose to think about a people and government such as this? If 90 percent of the junk we buy didn't come from there....we could just cut them off and let them do without our money, but now our government is borrowing money from them also. Another reason why I don't like our current administration either.

It's obvious Bejing knew they had a problem prior to the Olympics. So why did they wait so long to "take care" of the issue? The local shelters' say they will adopt to those who are interested, yet the Chinese govt. will make it as hard as possible for one to adopt. And they do that on purpose. No, I don't agree with their tactics, but who are we, the US, to tell them what and how to do it. If you don't like their ways, boycott their goods (which can be impossible) or don't go there.
