Chicken Problems

Browse News

PENNSYLVANIA – A young girl in North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania might have to give up her nine pet chickens, depending on how a town board rules. Melissa Hensler found out she'd have to give up the birds when a neighbor complained about them – citing town zoning that says chickens can't be kept on residential property.

The chicken problem gained national attention last month, and since then 70 people in the Huntingdon neighborhood said they disagree with the township's ruling – as do hundreds of online supporters who signed a petition backing the Henslers.

The birds have names like Lobster, Cocoa, and Steak - a fact the Henslers say helps prove they are pets.

During a contest held in the township last year one of Melissa's birds, named Sundae, was named Huntingdon's most unusual pet. The Henslers say if the town didn't have a problem then, they shouldn't now.

The case went before the town zoning board, but that resulted in a tie vote since one board member wasn't present. The group will vote again in December.

Are there any updates on this story? I'd like to know what complaints the neighbor had.

You ask: "Do you think Melissa's chickens should be considered pets?"

If the chickens do not bite the postman, it they do not defecate on the neighbor's yard, if they do not terrorize the younger children, then they should be allowed to stay. She's received positive reinforcement in the past about them.

I think she's showing maturity and responsibility and it would be cruel for the "adult" world to nay-say her.

yes they are pets! For those who have never taken the time to get to know them they are actually very individualistic........

Rediculous...receiving a recognition then being taken to court. Are they healthy, well fed, take those things into consideration.

She is taking good care of them and definitely treating them like pets, giving them names and entering them in a town contest. I hope they allow her to keep the chickens.

I've had chickens for about 5 years now, and YES, they are my pets and have names, ok, not all of them! My good fortune is that I live on 50 rural acres.

It would be heartbreaking for her to not be able to keep her chickens. Are they causing big problems?

I don't think it should be such a big problem but I can also see that if exceptions are made it is hard to tell what others will try.

Whether an animal is a pet depends a lot on how a person treats it.

As long as the little girl only has hens (female chickens) they would be fine in a residential area. Roosters tend to crow really loudly all day long when they are happy!

Chickens can absolutely be pets!!!! Some chickens(not all) have terrific personalities. We have pet chickens and they are great! Some will help you garden...they love it when you pull weeds they like the fresh dirt and bugs. Others just love to be petted and held like cats and dogs.

Absolutely they should be considered pets! Although they deserve better names than "lobster" and "steak" . . .

I had several chickens as pets when I was a child. One little bantam used to help with gardening - whenever I moved to a new spot to weed she would come running along with me.

my parents live one mile from town so it wasn't a problem but the chickens they had were definately their pets, they each had names and different personalities, and they were a lot of fun to watch and care for.

My mom once took a chicken to the vet because it was sick. As she sat in the waiting room she noticed a million tiny red bugs crawling up her arms--- chicken mites! Yikes!

I think she should get to keep them but at the same time I can see how making an exception would open up a whole other can of worms.

I must disagree. My cousins tried numerous times to train chickens and were unsuccessful. I would have to see a trained chicken to believe it.
