Chicago Woman Challenges State Definition of Companion Animal

Browse News

CHICAGO – Sara Tinsley faces felony animal cruelty charges for stabbing her ex-husband's lizards during an argument. She faces felony charges, but says lizards are not companion animals like cats and dogs; an assertion she's basing her case on.

It all started the day after Tinsley's then husband, Harry Tinsley, reportedly choked her. During a phone argument the following day, Tinsley threw her husband's bearded-dragon lizards Ethel and Fred against the wall before repeatedly stabbing them.

The 37-year-old faces two felony counts of animal cruelty. She hopes to get the animal cruelty charge reduced to a misdemeanor based on the state's companion animal definition.

Tinsley's defense attorney, Timothy Mahoney, says reptiles don't provide the same kind of companionship as traditional pets.

However, as far as lizards go, bearded-dragons are friendly. They can be held and walked short distances, and people are known to treat them like children.

State law defines a companion animal as one that's considered a pet by it's owner. The two pets in this case certainly were. Unfortunately, Ethel died. Fred survived following emergency surgery.

A judge will decide Sara Tinsley's fate when the trial begins on Feb. 20th. Her ex-husband Harry faces domestic battery charges for choking Sara – which allegedly sparked the animal abuse.

I don't care if the lizard was a pet, she took her anger out on poor innocent animals. She needs major help. Both of them need to learn anger management. No telling what she could do next.

The woman took her anger out on a helpless animal. Both the woman and the ex-husband need some anger management help. The choking was inappropriate. So was the retalliation on the lizards the next day.

It seems as though both these people are a little "off". Given that...I don't think this woman should be allowed to stab anyone's pet without consequences. And why shouldn't a lizard be classified as a companion animal? It sounds as though these lizards were serving as such.

If she basing her defense on that, she might as well forget it! I hope the courts don't fall for that garbage from her. She needs to pay for what she did to those poor creatures.

They should both be prosecuted. Depending on the person, all kinds of animals can be companion animals. Husband and wife both seem to be reckless of safety.

I agree with the previous writer. Two wrongs do not make a right here. What she did was much worse. Those poor lizards were not part of the problem.

They should be both charged. Although it was definitely wrong that the man choked his wife, I have more of a problem that she would stab innocent animals in retaliation.

Yes the husband should be charged for choking his wife. But where does she get off stabbing his lizards? She should be charged to the fullest extent of the law.

Just because you are angry with your spouse is no reason to involve the family pets. They're just innocent bystanders.

I'm amazed Fred made it. Reptiles usually aren't prime candidates for surgery! Good doctors, lucky lizard. I owned one of these for a while. They are very friendly, which makes them a demanding reptile. Without play and attention they will not thrive - dare I say, without COMPANIONSHIP?

I know someone and his reptiles are definitely pets. I hope that both the man and woman go to jail. The remaining lizard needs a new home with stable owners.

This is ridiculous. Even if they are not "companions," they are still animals and it is still wrong, especially since the stabbing led to one's death and another had to get surgery. Besides, their owner cared for them and considered them companion animals. She is completely and utterly wrong.

I understan how the woman was fighting with her husband but I don't think she should have taken it out on his lizards and killed them. All animals can give you love, even if you can't cuddle up with them.

So, she's crazy. She should be examines thoroughly. People that abuse and torture animals are much more prone to do it to a human being. What if they had been human children? She needs to be locked up for a long, long time.

She abused, tortured & (ultimately killed) animals - period . No way she should get off on a technicality. So many horrible things happen to pets during domestic arguments. Disfuctional people shouldn't have pets for obvious reasons.
