Chicago Animal Hospital Sets the ‘Gold’ Standard

Browse News

CHICAGO –- For most pets –- going to the vet isn’t exactly a walk in the park. But Gold Coast Animal Hospital is changing that, one innovative procedure at a time.

The mere mention of Gold Coast Animal Hospital gets golden retrievers Shade and Maka’s tails wagging.

“My male loves to get in the car -- my female doesn’t,” owner Mark O’Neil told Pet Pulse. “But if I say, ‘come on, we’re going to see Dr. Reece,’ both of them are in the car. They get really excited when we pull into the lot."

Shade and Maka’s aren’t alone.

Dr. Harold Reece, president and owner of Gold Coast Animal Hospital, compares the bustling facility, which employs five doctors and treats up to 55 patients a day, to an emergency room.

The parallel goes beyond just the bustling environment. Gold Coast performs procedures like chemotherapy and root canals –- things you might not expect to see at an animal hospital –- nearly every day.

"We have laser surgery which many hospitals don’t have,” Dr. Reece said. “We’ve got ultrasounds and endoscopes, which are more intense surgeries as a general practice goes than most."

Round out that list with scores of spays and neuters, fracture repairs and even a rehab swimming pool –- and you begin to see why the 23,000 square foot space is necessary.

For the city’s cats and canines –- Gold Coast provides one-stop medical shopping that relies on Doctor Reece’s dogged dedication.

When Doctor Reece says he lives at work, he really means it. An apartment sits on the top floor of the hospital, where Reece stays several nights a week, so he can keep an extra eye on the animals.

"If we keep the pets in the community healthy, then we are actually providing a major community service," Reece said. "The satisfaction you get from the appreciation from your clients is certainly a major, major plus."

When the time came for Shade to have cysts removed – O’neil knew just where to turn.

"I have total comfort,” O’Neil said. “I think like a lot of my friends who come here, we all wish he’d be our personal physician."

With Chicago’s shelters and pet owners looking to Reece to mend their animals’ medical maladies, he says he’s happy to keep playing Doctor Doolittle.

"I enjoy what I do,” Reece said. “Veterinary medicine has been very good to me and a long as my health is good and I still enjoy doing the things that I do -- I will keep doing those things."

He’s made some loyal patients in the process. O’Neil and his retrievers are moving to Virginia, but they’re already planning a trip back to their beloved hospital.

“The hardest thing about moving is that I’m going to miss him,” O’Neil said. “This place is the one thing I’m going to miss the most and I think it is going to be the hardest to recreate."

This is one animal hospital that’s worth its weight in gold.

That Dr. Reece sounds like a super vet! I really love the veterinarian I take my "kids" to here in Portland, OR. Dr. Donald McCoy of North Portland Veterinary Hospital has a state-of-the-art facility with 11 doctors and plenty of caring staff & technicians. I like to take my pets to see him personally, but all of the vets there are terrific.

Sounds great but wonder how expensive it is with all that overhead.
We're lucky to have a very good vet but would have to go elsewhere for the specialized services offered here.

What a wonderful story. I wish all vet offices were like this. I love a vet who is there with compassion for the pets and not just treating them like another # on the assembly line. It is sad how sometimes people will be turned away regardless of what the condition is if they don't have the money. My cousin took his dog to the local animal hospital and was turned away because he did not have the money, he got so mad, because his dog was bleeding and had been hit by a car. He went on up the road and stopped elsewhere and they did see the animal and treat it. They allowed him to pay some and make the rest in payments.

That's unbelievable that a vet would not treat an animal that is in obvious distress because the owner didn't have the money. I thought they were in the business of healing. Ugh! Glad he found a vet that would help and offered a payment plan.

I applaud any work done for shelter. There is much that can be done to help animal, unfortunately many of these procedures come with a price that is not always easily afforded.

wow that is a pretty crazy animal hospital. i never thought that there would ever be a place like that for animals

Wish I lived closer to this vet! Talk about loving your work!

It is always great when you can find a vet that both you and your animals love. That is so important. For you, knowing the vet has the ability to really care for your animal for any need there might be. And for your animal to feel comfortable and not stressed out.

It is one of the reasons that I had switched vets. I was not happy with the vet we were using. They had changed up some of their procedures and I did not like it. Things like taking the animal to the back to do exams or whatever, instead of with me in the room so we could go over things together. I switched to a vet who also loves helping our humane society. The dogs get belly rubs from all the cute vet techs too.

I do commend Dr. Reece and his 23,000 square foot facility and his apartment that he stays in several nights a week but I do have some questions about this story:
Why do the animals love to go there? Are they bounding in the car for that pesky root canal that is made more enjoyable at Gold Coast?
Also, I have to wonder what he charges. It has been my experience that a fancy facility passes on a fancy bill.
Pet owners are already being raked over the coals on so-called premium pet food. I would love to take my rescues here but something tells me I would not be able to walk thru the doors of a Gold Coast.
Again, I certainly do not want to take away from what is being done here but it just seems to be another option for people with more money than I have.

While I think it's a great idea, I think of those that can only afford to maintain the basics of their pets care. Your seniors, and your low income could benefit from this too, but we know being on the "Gold Coast in Chi-town" is not going to be reasonable to anyone but the wealthy. Health care is rising for our pets...not just us, and it's a real shame because those that cant afford the chemo or root canals, just suffer or get put down. So I dont know if I commend this article. Illinois is so over populated with shelters full of animals in need of loving homes, so I am happy to see the less fortunate able to have an animal to love, I just wish they had options for treatment as those of the "Gold Coast".

Kudos to Dr. Reece. I wish I had that kind of vet for my animals. The facility has so much more to offer than a small town vet office that just vaccinates & does spay/neuter. It would be a blessing if more vet offices had surgical procedures available in their office for pets instead of being referred to s specialist 100 miles away that's a total stranger to you & your pet. Keep up the great work Dr. Reece & employees:)

Its great to have vets who care about the whole health of your pets. Not just get them in and get them out for a buck. When they put this much thought into pet care they must really love their jobs and the animals who come there know this. You can feel comfortable knowing your pet will get the best care possible, this is great to see happening and hopefully the idea will spread.

I had a vet who had an apartment above his office. When an animal was critical, or needed around the clock care...shots and so on, he was right upstairs. He also had whatever the animal needed for services. He was an amazing vet!

I think the article missed the real point here. While the fancy equipment and procedures are wonderful and I certainly make use of them when my animals need them, the real story here is that the animals love this vet! We have and allergist, who is certainly educated and has an arsenal of knowledge and procedures to help my animal, but the reason that our princess likes to go there is simply that EVERYONE there from the receptionist to the techs to the vet treat her like royalty and are genuinely glad to see her.

That's what we've been pointing out: the lack of information regarding WHAT the animals like about going to this particular Animal Hospital. Your comment offers us MORE pertinent information than the article itself! (That's good for you and the Zootoo readers, but not very flattering to the article's author.)

That's exactly what I was thinking. The Gold Coast in Chicago is known for being uber-expensive, and Dr. Reece says in the article that vet medicine has been good to him.

I like the fact that everything is located in the same building. It is hard enough to find that your baby has a serious health problem. When you have to transport it to different places to get different tests it just makes it harder on the pet and you

What a great sounding clinic, I wish they had one by me. Most of the vets around me, only do basic vet. You really need to travel for more extensive care, and you get a triple the bill too.

Just like she said, a good doctor (vet) is hard to find. This is amazing, and I very much wish we had something like it in my town. I've a wonderful vet, but he doesn't have such access to this additional equipment, nor available 24/7. And to find an equine vet that's available - insane.

So, kudos to this animal hospital and it's great staff!

Kelsie just likes to ride in the car, so if it's an excuse to do that...WOOHOO! She likes her usual vet Dr. Brown, and we were 'shopping' for a secondary or new vet, because a lot of times Dr. Brown is BOOKED, and he's not able to make appointments with you for a couple days. Although, if you have an emergency, he's wonderful.

I have to agree with Michele Z. on this one, where is the correlation between the vet and the dogs' eagerness to get there other than the special treats and such? Sorry, but I failed to see where that connected.

Sounds like a great place. my dogs do not mind the trip to our vet.

My animals generally do not like going to the vet. The last time I took my pup Delilah to the vet though she thoroughly enjoyed it. She was giving the vet puppy kisses and was happy as she could be. The time before she whined and cried and you would have thought I had beat her before we came! You never know how they are going to react.

It is wonderful when an area has a facility like Gold Coast Animal Hospital available to them; it saves a lot of time going from one place to another to have specialized procedures done. It is obvious that Dr. Reece not only has a sincere love of animals but has that added "touch" that makes him a friend in their eyes, or they would not react so well to visiting him.

This is a goal all pet hospitals should strive for. We had a very good pet hospital like this in Pittsburgh and one in Morgantown, but now that we live in Parkersburg, WV, there are none like this around here.

Wow! This sounds like a great place. My cats hate going to the vet. I can't even say the word vet in front of them. We have to spell it out and say it's time to go the V-E-T. I have a very good vet, but they don't have all the technology listed in this article. There are offices in the not to distant area that do but I'll keep going to mine unless they need something like that.
