Celebrate Be Kind to Animals Week!
For pet lovers, every week is an opportunity to show affection and love to our furry friends. But from May 2 - 8, 2010, American Humane makes this celebration official by sponsoring "Be Kind to Animals Week."
Since 1915, the organization has commemorated the special role that animals play in our lives with a weeklong celebration. During the week, American Humane promotes ways to continue to treat animals humanely and to encourage others — especially children — to do the same.
American Humane honors animals in several ways as part of the celebration, including the distribution of shelter information and resources, the release of special merchandise, and the annual Be Kind to Animals™ Kid Contest, recognizing children who go to extraordinary lengths in order to create a better world for their animal friends.
Be Kind to Animals Week may only be celebrated once a year, but there are many ways that individuals can show their love for animals every day.
Speak out for animals
Many policies and laws impact animals in your community and nationwide, so become informed about legislation. You can register to receive Action Alerts from American Humane, and begin to advocate for the rights of animals just by clicking your mouse!
Report animal abuse
Learn how to recognize indicators of animal cruelty by being aware of suspicious signs — a skinny dog chained in your neighbor's yard, or a cat in a box being kicked by a child. Don't hesitate to get others involved in helping combat animal cruelty and abuse!
Appreciate wildlife
Being kind to animals means more than just treating your pets like the family members they are. Even animals in the wild need our protection and compassion. Create space in your yard for butterflies, hummingbirds, and other animal friends. And if animals are coming too close to your home or garden, seek out ways to protect your property peacefully and humanely.
Adopt a pet from a shelter or rescue
American Humane has many tips for finding the animal friend that's right for you — from a local shelter or rescue group. By adopting a pet, you can help animals find a forever, loving home.
