Cat Shooter Sez He Was Protecting Rare Birds

Browse News

TEXAS – Ornithologist Kim Stevenson says he was trying to protect endangered birds when he shot and killed a feral cat last year.

But prosecutors say Stevenson made no attempt to alert authorities that the animal was endangering rare birds.

The cat he killed was living under the San Luis Pass toll bridge near Galveston Texas. It was part of a feral cat colony living there - a fact Stevenson says he wasn't aware of before he shot it.

Had he done more research, he would have known that the cats indeed have a caretaker - someone who cares for and protects them - much in the same way the ornithologist was protecting birds.

Stevenson became involved in a car chase with bridge worker John Newland, who chased him down after seeing the feline get shot.

Newland feeds and cares for the colony, and considers the cats his own.

The chase ended in a collision – at which point Stevenson was arrested and later released on $10,000 bail. If found guilty, he could face a $10,000 fine and up to two years in jail.

But the 54 year-old founder of the Galveston Ornithological Society says he never would have hurt the cat had he known someone was caring for it. He didn't know the colony was domesticated.

I wish they did more updates on these articles. What ended up happening? but its silly that he ran after this happened, if it WAS justified than he had no reason to run.

I think the fact that he ran after shooting the cat kind of points to the fact that he knew what he was doing was wrong. I'd like to know how the court case turned out.

It shouldn't matter if the cat was part of a feral colony or not. You don't shoot animals. Don't take responsibilities like protecting endangered animals as your own, it's not random citizen's responsibilities. Leave it up to the professionals.

makes me wonder if he was just using the birds as an excuse. he sure didn't bother to investigate before he took it upon himself to kill the cat.

Guns and human interference are not the way to deal with Nature's Plan. Sometimes nature makes us moan and groan but we have to give way to it.

I don't think the shooter handled the situation very well at all. There is always a better solution than picking up a gun.

It's good to know that feral cats are protected by the law too. I'm happy to hear this man is being punished.

Stevenson said he would not have shot the cat if he knew someone was caring for it. I believe he meant he would not have shot it if he knew someone were watching. I commend John Newland for his vigilance and forthright actions!!

In Maui, there was a man who killed his landlord's german shepherd because he thought the dog was trying to kill a feral cat that he was feeding. It was a really divided case, as the landlord lived in a house on the property, and also had a cottage on the same land that he rented out to a Filipino family. One day he heard a yelp. and his beloved german shepherd, who was chained, was found with his head nearly severed. The tenant had used a machete to hack at the dog's neck. He said he did it because he thought the dog was trying to kill a feral stray cat that his family had been feeding. The dog, named Dallas died. People in the community were torn, the cat lovers defended the killer, while the dog lovers thought that the guy should be punished. I just don't get it. All animals' lives are important, and no one should ever kill someone else's pet.

It just seems that there could have been a better solution to this. I can see that he wanted to protect the birds. But the problem is really the feral cats. People should not be feeding them without capturing and sterilizing them too. Otherwise, they are just encouraging this feral colony to thrive, and that's not good for the health of the community of people and birds.

There's no excuse for shooting a cat, ever. As sad as it is that bird populations are plummeting, there are safer, kinder alternatives to murdering felines. Also, how safe do you think it is for some man in a vehicle to be driving around shooting at things. What if there had been children around?

I disagree with the guy shooting the cat, but he was trying to do what he thought was best for the animal he prioritized. It's easy to argue both sides here, but ultimately, he should have done a little more research or tried to trap and remove the cat from the area before resorting to shooting it.

I understand wanting to protect the endangered birds - but I could never condone shooting a cat. Seems the cat needed protection from the man with the gun. Difficult situation.

I can sympathize with the ornithologist to a degree. His passion is birds, particularly this rare one he was allegedly protecting. But, like the article mentions - if he had done his research, he'd have known that not only was the cat was being cared for, but that feral cat predation is VERY low on the list of reasons for native bird deaths. Birds crashing into the windows of skyscrapers and being sucked through windmills (gross, I know) are reasons much higher on the list, and - that's right - PEOPLE are responsible for those...

he's in texas, there's other natural predators there... is he going to shoot them too? i mean, they're wildlife, so they're probably not in anyone's direct care so.... i guess to him that would make it okay.

It looks like this is two guys taking things into their own hands and making things worse. You cannot just go around shooting cats to protect birds that are not yours and on your property. You also cannot get into a car chase putting peoples lives in danger to catch an idiot shooting wild cats.

That seems like a very large fine and jail time. I don't condone shooting cats but I understand where the bird man was and if he truely thought it was wild then maybe could understand.

He should not have shot the cat no matter what the reason. But the caretaker should not have chased him, that caused the accident that could have killed someone, making a bad situation worse. He should be held somewhat responsible for the accident. But you can't judge the shooter too harshly, considering the advancement of the USA was founded on the same kind of decisions. Such as, shoot the wolves, mountain lions & other predators to protect the domesticated animals.

Luckily no one else was hurt. He shouldnt have shot the cat though. He obviously didnt check the cats out too much or he could have found out that they were being taken care of. I'm sure the city knew this?
