Cat Declaw Ban in California

Browse News

The California Supreme Court ruled this week that cities in the sunshine state can ban the declawing of cats.

The California Veterinary Medical Association challenged a 2003 ordinance created by the City of West Hollywood that bans declawing. It was the only law of its kind in California, but now it's open for debate statewide.

According to declaw.org, the process of declawing is more like amputation – And the ordeal is extremely painful because it requires removal of the claw, part of the bone and tendons.

The West Hollywood ordinance being challenged says, “mere convenience to the pet's guardian does not justify the unnecessary pain, anguish and permanent disability caused to the animal.”

Coming to Hollywood's defense was the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, which filed papers to support the ban. Apparently, San Fran's shelters won't adopt out a cat if they know its guardian plans to declaw.

The movement appears to be gaining traction in the west. But we want to know what you think. Should declawing be banned where you live?

At the animal shelter I volunteer for, it seems like everyday we have someone surrender their cat that has been declawed. For those of us that are trying to find homes for these animals, it becomes more difficult. We have people that would love to adopt these cats but their ability to be outdoors has been stripped from them. I think it is wrong to deprive a cat of its natural defenses. A declawed cat's only defense becomes biting. There are so many new products on the market to help with their cat scratching. To declaw them just seems so drastic and unnecessary.

With the many alternatives to declawing (soft paws, scratching alternatives, trimming the claws themselves, etc.) declawing a cat, in my opinion, is extreme. Not only are you exposing your loving pet to unnecessary pain and anguish but you will possibly find yourself dealing with behavior problems later in life with you cat. I think that most families that opt for the surgery simply aren't aware of how difficult the process is on the cat. I'm thrilled to see the ban, but I would be even more excited to see a step up in the education to the general public about the surgery itself and the very likely problems associated with cats who are declawed. I truly believe if people were more educated on how difficult the surgery can be on a cat that most people would make this choice for themselves without the ban.

If you are having a cat declawed, you don't have the cat for the right reasons. Plain and simple.
With love of any creature comes acceptance of their nature. Someone who wants a cute kitty as an accessory but wants to change it to their liking so it doesn't scratch up their other accessories should not have a cat. Cats use their claws for other things, as well- often they will gently brandish them to let you know they're done being petted. If they don't have claws, they'll just bite the bejeezez out of you instead. They're cats. It's what they do. If you can't deal with that, don't have a cat, for pete's sake.
Also, I find it interesting that many cat stewards who have their animal declawed also let them in and out of the house. How ridiculous is that? Now you are exposing him to animal attacks, having disarmed him. Would you cut off your child's fingers because he kept drawing on your walls?

We do agree....This is the only protection the animals have while outside....Without their claws how are they to climb a tree when in danger or anything else for that matter?

I am totally against declawing. I have had many cats over the years and have never had one declawed. If people would only take the trouble to read what this processed does to their cat, I don't think anyone would be for it.

The cat is asleep. Pain medication can be given. But, what happens so many times is that people get rid of their cats. If they are declawed, they have to be an indoor cat. They can't go out. I don't believe in declawing all 4 paws. I rescued a cat from a shelter that didn't have any claws.

I believe that everyone who is considering declawing for the wrong reasons (I do believe there are some times that it is necessary, but it is mostly done for the wrong reasons) should have to watch a declaw surgery being done, It is gruelsome!!!!!!!!!!!!

Declawing should be banned everywhere. Cats should not have to be mutilated simply because the owner doesn't want to take the time to show the cat where they can scratch. Declawing is nothing more then a selfish persons way of thinking about objects over their cats well being.

Declawing is absolutely a cruel surgery, it is banned in most other industrialized nations, why should we be allowing it? How about recommending soft paws/ soft claws or sticky paws? Kudos to CA!

I am so happy that this idea is finally gaining some traction! Declawing is an uneccessary practice that is all about owner convenience (or laziness!). It's like cutting a dog's ears or tail, but worse. Cat toes serve a purpose. With options like Softpaws (nail tip covers) declawing is an even more unattractive option.

In some Europian countries they do not allow declawing, ear trimming, or tail docking. They view it as mutilation. I am totally against declawing. I worked at a vet clinic and have seen how it is done, and how much pain the cats are in when they wake up from surgery. I rescue animals out of kill shelters, and alot of declawed cats end up there because they turn to biting, or not using the litter box. I have a 4 paw declawed Persian that I pulled out of a shelter that can barely walk because of the bad job that was done on her, and she doesn't use the litter box.

Declawing is a painful process for cats, involving the removal of more than claws. It should be the option of last resort for a pet owner. Declawed cats may develop other behavior problems, including biting. In addition, even well- behaved house cats can escape if the circumstances are right, and that pet would be left with no significant defenses. However, it seems intrusive for governement to determine whether or not a cat should be declawed. The more reasonable course is good pet owner education.

The pain and possible infection and other problems to follow does not justify the convenience of the cat owner. If a declawed cat accidentally (and accidents do happen) happens to get out of the house, it has NO defense against other animals. Maybe some education as to other solutions could be taught??

It sounds like it would be painful to the cat, but sometimes homeowners have no choice. If my cat was tearing up all my furinture, i would have him declawed! Im sure they give the cats some kind of pain killer befor the do the procedure so the cats dont feel a thing!

this is exaclty what i mean!! if your cat was tearing up your furniture you would have it declawed. why would that be your first option instead of maybe calling a vet, shelter or even doing your own research on how to train your cat to not be destructive? I have 6 cats...NONE scratch my furniture....because they were all trained!! they won't even jump up on my sofa!! The whole declawing thing is inhumane and just another easy way out for HUMANS who don't want to take time to care properly for their pets who trust in them. How could anyone just hand over their cat to the vet....BONE SAW in hand.....HORRIBLE!!!

I work in the shelter and we often get "dumped" off cats that are declawed. They get "dumped" because oftentimes when their claws are gone they start biting! I like this law.

I hope that this ordinance withstands any future opposition as well. If other cities adopt such rules, my hope is that it will spread eastward and that declawing will be come obsolete, an artifact of history.

I'm against declawing. I think it to be a cruel way to control a cat's behavior.
Cats have claws for a reason.....self preservation. If people need to have a cat declawed then maybe they should have a different type of pet....like fish.

I think that maybe people should be educated more on other alternatives instead of declawing. Making it against the law I am not sure of but people should be required to weigh the benefits. Just because puppies chew everything people don't go running and removing their teeth!

I think this is ridiculous and it will turn away a lot of potential adopters in CA. What's next--ban on spays because they are too invasive?

That is a pretty weak argument. Of course there wont be a ban on spay and nuters because they are invasive. Spay and nueters are required to stop the pet overpopulation and homeless problem. The difference between that and banning declawing is DECLAWING is cruel, inhumane, and painful for the animals. Why is it that its okay to just have your cats bones sawed off instead of YOU, the RESPONSIBLE PET OWNER taking responsiblity to train your animals so they don't engage in destructive behavior? To me its basically laziness..and perhaps some lack of education on the matter. CATS COME WITH CLAWS PEOPLE!!!!

Personally, I think that declawing a cat is wrong because they don't just cut off the nails: they also cut off the last bone in your cat's paw. Not to mention, the action is inhumane and unnecessary mutilation! There are other ways to make it so your cat can't tear stuff up (have you ever heard of Soft Claws???)

I dont think having a cat declawed is wrong. I have three cats and two of them are declawed. They were sleeping during thier surgeries and medicated with pain relievers when they came home. They did wonderful with thier healing process. With so many bans and new rules, no one is going to want to adopt or rescue cats and the homeless problem could become far worse than it already is! just my 2 cents!

I don't think having a ban on declawing would cause people to not want to have cats. There are alternatives, like caps, but people need to know about them. What if vets were required to give people all their options before agreeing to do the surgery?

how would you feel if someone put you in a cage,
and cut part of your finger just so your nail won't grow anymore,
when you really think about it, It's selfish and cruel.
I was pissed when my mother got Taffy fixed and declawed,
and so was he, he ignored and hissed at us for weeks,
but eventually got over it, I just think it should be against the law !!

Oh my gosh, I'm surprised at the number of people who think that this mutilation is okay. Yes, it "appears" as though your cats who went through this procedure were just "fine" with it....hmmmm....I must respectfully disagree. Cats who are declawed live in a constant state of anxiety....yes, YOU know that they live indoors, but your kitty doesn't. Also there is a direct correlation between declawed cats and litter box issues. Trust me on that one...I volunteer at a shelter and I would estimate that out of 10 declawed cats reliniquished, 7-8 have a litter box aversion. Declawing results from your vet using a BONE SAW to cut through your kitties bones! How is that animal lovers feel that this abuse is okay? Perhaps the next time you want to declaw your animal, you'll take the time to train them to stop destructive behavior....I have 6 cats...NONE of which even go on my sofa!! PEOPLE can train them....have a heart....don't just take the easy way out because you don't have the time or the patience to train your cats. Cats have claws. Cats need claws. If you are so worried about your furniture...perhaps you might consider adopting a turtle.
