Cat Declaw Ban in California

Browse News

The California Supreme Court ruled this week that cities in the sunshine state can ban the declawing of cats.

The California Veterinary Medical Association challenged a 2003 ordinance created by the City of West Hollywood that bans declawing. It was the only law of its kind in California, but now it's open for debate statewide.

According to declaw.org, the process of declawing is more like amputation – And the ordeal is extremely painful because it requires removal of the claw, part of the bone and tendons.

The West Hollywood ordinance being challenged says, “mere convenience to the pet's guardian does not justify the unnecessary pain, anguish and permanent disability caused to the animal.”

Coming to Hollywood's defense was the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, which filed papers to support the ban. Apparently, San Fran's shelters won't adopt out a cat if they know its guardian plans to declaw.

The movement appears to be gaining traction in the west. But we want to know what you think. Should declawing be banned where you live?

I feel declawing is very wrong! How would you feel if someone ripped your fingers off at the first knuckle? That is just what happens when you declaw a cat.

I think that declawing a cat is like taking away our fingers. I mean, cats are just as good as humans. We don't take away cats claws, cats don't take away our fingers. End of story.

Can anyone actually declaw a cat if they knew exactly what it felt like? Take your last knuckle on any of your fingers...now cut it off!!!! That is what declawing a cat entails....wanna declaw your cat now?!?!?

No, only bans on mutilation. Which is exactly what declawing is.....mutilation. There is no pain associated with being spayed or neutered, but cut off some tendons and ligaments... THINK ABOUT IT!! Don't base your opinion to defend bad decision you have made in the past. There are other alternatives.

I feel declawing is a painful approach to dealing with some problems of having a cat. Declawing also limits the animal in defend itself. So i have to aggree with California in making it illegal.

Whew! I truly have mixed feelings on this one. I used to be 100% against declawing, period. But I was also at home then, and able to supervise my cat and prevent problems with destructive behavior. Now I work in a shelter, and besides the fact that I'm gone all day and can't prevent a lot of destructive behavior, I also see cats surrendered because of destructive behavior. I've had cats declawed and it didn't have any bad effects. I guess my vet was skillful. My cats didn't become biters, avoid the litter pan, or show any signs of discomfort. They're happy and well adjusted. I do think too many people look for a surgical solution instead of attempting good training and supervision. Perhaps the procedure should be taxed in some way to discourage people from resorting to it, with the monies going to shelters to help unwanted cats. People need to understand that many, many people will simply not permit a fully clawed cat in their home. That translates into more cats losing their lives. It's a complicated issue, to be sure.

I'm not going weigh in on the whole "is it wrong to declaw" debate, but I do find it silly in California to ban any kind of "elective" surgery on an animal. They should, like most states, make it a nessary thing to spay/neuter your animals, so less animals go into shelters, and it's easier for those shelters to find unwanted animals homes...

I think it is great to out law this inhumane practice. It is mutilation and the owners either do it out of not understanding or selfishness.

I have 2 cats, both of which are de-clawed. This was only after I had tried everything else, at least to my knowledge. My cats were destroying my furniture and something had to be done. This was after months and months of trying various things, but to no avail. I would have preferred not to have had to resort to this, but as in my case and I don't feel I stand alone, something had to be done.

It seems to be convinent for cat owners to declaw them but what is not understood look how many of those cats end up outside! Then the cat has no way to protect him/herself. It is unfair to take that away from them!

As a veterinary student, I do not agree with declawing, and I will never practice it when I graduate for my own moral reasons. However, there are many instances where declawing can save a cats life. For example, and elderly person who has trouble clotting wants to adopt a cat from a shelter. The cat would be euthanized if it could not be adopted. The cats are under anesthesia when they are declawed, and it is considered an elective surgery. However, it makes me think of why people neuter male cats when they know the cat is going to stay indoors for its whole life. We do this for our own convenience to prevent spraying, marking, etc. Much like the argument to to declaw cats, it is for our own convenience. Sometimes I feel that there are two sides of every story.

I think a good step would be to inform people what declawing really is. I had my cat done years ago and was never told what all it entailed. Now that I know, I would never have it done. But the fact is that most people just aren't educated as to what it really involves.

While I personally would never declaw a cat , I do believe that this is a personal choice for the pet owner and it should be left up to the owners. There are people who are diabetic who if they get a bad scratch it could beme a matter of health for them.

Exactly! My grandmother was diabetic and she was ALWAYS around my cat. I had to declaw him... she was in love with my cat, so I had to do something! The soft paws didn't work out so well with my cat. Declawing him was a last resort.

Declawing a cat is totally inhumane and unnecessary. If declawing is the only way a person will keep a cat in their home, perhaps that person should not have a cat. Would you cut off your child's fingers because they wrecked the living room furniture? Obviously not. There are EASY and humane ways to keep your cat from destroying your furniture. And, if you value your furniture more than your cat, perhaps you should not have a cat.

Declawing a cat is horrible. The process is not just removing the nail, it is the whole first knuckle! At our shelter, we do not allow it to our adopted pets. This is mulitation. Also, if your cat runs away; it wont be able to protect its self. It could starve to death or be killed by another animal.

I think this is so unfair. Who are these people to decide what we can and can't do with our pets. What are the going to say next, we can't cut our childrens hair. You might say those two things are nothing alike...how about circumcision? Will they say we can't have that done to our sons? We live in a free country for a reason. If someone wants to declaw their cat, then that's their choice. Not the states or governments. Declawing is nothing like amputation. If these people would take a little time out of their day and visit a vet clinic to watch a declaw being performed, they would completely chang their mind. I'm for declawing!!

Personally I have 2 cats both of which are indoor cats that are free to roam outside if they choose, I have had neither declawed. I do agree with Jenna however that if you ban declawing, you are going to have a lot of "Adoptive Parents" that will not adopt your cats from your shelter. I chose to leave my cats claws intact due to the fact that they do roam outside & their claws are their means of defense. I know several people however that have only had their cats' front claws removed. I think though if you are going to have a cat that will be inside at all times, you should have the choice to declaw or not declaw. But if it is going to be an outdoor or part-time outdoor I feel the claws should be left intact.... for self defense of the cat....

Declawing a cat is cruel. It does not solve problems, but only adds to them. Cats use their claws for protection when attacked. If you get your cat declawed, have problems later with them not using the litterbox, and throw them outside, how do you expect them to defend themselves? If you spend time with your cat, you can train them not to claw up your house. My family has always had cats, inside and out, and we have never had to even think of getting a cat declawed!

I think declawing is inhumane. It`s cruel to the poor cat. How would you like it if someone took you to a doctor and took all your fingernails of? I bet you would hate it, and so would a poor cat. It`s wrong, and it should be against the law.

Declawing is barbaric and should be banned every where. I think it will take some time for this to happen, but it's great it's making a start. In the meantime, we need to education everyone on the alternatives and how to trim nails and train a cat to a scratching post. When the ban comes, more people will be prepared for it.

You should watch the surgery if you think it is fine - it's horrible.

I feel that declawing a cat is just plain wrong. I applaud California for taking such a step in promoting the welfare of cats. If people who declaw their cats would take the time to learn different ways of reprimanding their cat, they wouldn't need to declaw them. I have 3 cats and none are declawed, but don't claw the furniture or scratch anything but their scratching post. Do the people who declaw their cats take into consideration what would happen if that cat should get outside. They would have no protection from dogs or any other hazards. Also put yourself in your cats place. Would you like part of your finger removed just to make it convenient for someone else, so they don't have to train you properly.

well it doesn't matter either way but if your cat ever gets lost and has to defend for it's self then it should have it's claws left in but if you no your cat won't ever EVER get out then it's alright i mean i have four cats and there all declawed because they live inside and will never get out

I'm thinking that a compromise law could be enacted. How about a mandatory two-week wait for the surgery. The owner could be given some educational information describing training methods which provide options to declawing. At least some of the owners could be convinced that it's not a good idea. The operation usually is done by people who are ignorant of how to teach a cat not to claw, or they are too lazy to deal with the training.

I'm not sure about outlawing it completely. I agree that too many cats need homes, and this will definitely keep some people from adopting. The other thing is that this is the land of free. We can't keep having the government putting limits willy-nilly on our ability to live our lives.

Declawing is WRONG!!!! It is like cutting off half your finger. Come on,we are smarter than clawed cat. There are so many ways around this, scratching poles, calming agent, common sense.....When are humans going to take the high road and realize this is a problem we can deal with, without hurting the cat. We can make a difference. Yes it take effort, but it is well worth it.

Personally I do not believe that declawing is a matter of choice. I have had cats that have been declawed (front paws only) and some that have not been declawed. I do hope that the process did not cause pain but I never saw any damage or limitations (other than not being able to shred furniture) to my furry friends. Couldn't this be compared to circumcision choices of a parent on a male newborn? I think people are getting a little carried away and stressing on some silly issues.

I FEEL THAT DECLAWING OF CATS, IF DONE AT AN EARLY AGE, SHOULD BE UP TO THE CAT OWNER. OUR COURTS SHOULD NOT MAKE THAT DECISION FOR US AND SHOULD NOT OUR LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS. EVERY CAT OWNER SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO DECIDE BASED ON THEIR WANTS AND NEEDS.
