Cat Declaw Ban in California

Browse News

The California Supreme Court ruled this week that cities in the sunshine state can ban the declawing of cats.

The California Veterinary Medical Association challenged a 2003 ordinance created by the City of West Hollywood that bans declawing. It was the only law of its kind in California, but now it's open for debate statewide.

According to declaw.org, the process of declawing is more like amputation – And the ordeal is extremely painful because it requires removal of the claw, part of the bone and tendons.

The West Hollywood ordinance being challenged says, “mere convenience to the pet's guardian does not justify the unnecessary pain, anguish and permanent disability caused to the animal.”

Coming to Hollywood's defense was the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, which filed papers to support the ban. Apparently, San Fran's shelters won't adopt out a cat if they know its guardian plans to declaw.

The movement appears to be gaining traction in the west. But we want to know what you think. Should declawing be banned where you live?

What happens when you declaw your cat and it gets outside? How will it defend itself?? Declawing is wrong, and leaves a cat defenseless.

I personally am so sick of the to declaw or not to declaw debate! If declawing a cat will get them into a warm and loving home then Go for it! It is ridiculous to pass your personal judgement on whether or not someone will be a good pet owner based on this alone. If someone adopts, vets and keeps their cat inside, but declaws does that make them unworthy of owning a cat? I think it would be ridiculous to ban it and I also think many people would be less inclined to adopt a cat. The point is to get these animals in to homes not make it harder for them.

I can understand why people would want to declaw their cats, but....think about what its' doing to the cats themself. I can't say too much about declawing as one of my cats is declawed herself - although she was already this way when I first acquired her. Would I declaw any of my pets that I have now that still have their claws? Probably not. Knowing what the process involves of where they cut off the nail on the cat's paw I don't think I'd ever have this done as a choice. Furthermore, what is the cat to do if it gets outside - how will it defend itself? I've seen one too many cats be brought into my local shelter that were declawed. A stray that is declawed? What defense does that have? This is one issue where owners should think more of the cat than themself.

Yes! This is a great step toward eliminating declawing. There are alternatives to declawing, which is something HSCC explains to a lot of potential adopters at our shelter. I've used Soft Claws on one of my cats, and they work, as well as scratching posts, spray bottles, and double-sided tape. It's not just about the procedure. Some people don't understand that declawing a cat leaves them with only one method of defense...their teeth. And cat bites are serious. It also can cause behavior issues, especially with the litterbox because it hurts their claws when they use it. If cat owners should be willing to work with their cats to prevent scratching instead of turning to a horrible procedure.

I know of many cats that would have been destroyed if they were not declawed. It is a decision that should only be made after talking to a vet and being informed about all the risks. It is amazing the amount of people that don't realize it is an amputation procedure. The best way to perform the procedure is to use a laser and nerve blocks along with the appropriate pain control afterward.

Good, we want our nails as nature intended. You always see the Lions and other big cats stretching out on a tree to sharpen theirs and also as a form of exercise. It feel sooo good. My sister cat, who was declawed at 4 years of age (before she came to us) is a big sissy. My mom says she has "issues" and we must respect her. Mom cuts our nails pretty regularly and it's really no big deal.

Yes- ban declawing. It's cruel. Cats come with claws- if you don't like it, don't own one.
I recommend people who have to have a declawed cat that they go to a shelter and specifically request one who has already been declawed.

It was not stated, does the car suffer long term damage? Will it always been in pain? I am a pet owner of several dogs and one cat, whome is declawed. My mother adopted him for me when I was only 7, he is 11 years old and was declawed when we first got him. Had we known what the process for declawing a cat was we probably would not have had him declawed. If the cat does not suffer any long term damage it isn't wrong to declaw them as long as they are strictly inside cats. It is dangerous to put a declawed cat outside, they have no way to defend themselves, or to flee up a tree if something is after them. Many people whome have animals do not like them on the furniture, or clawing the furniture. If being allowed to declaw your INSIDE cat attracts more people to adoption that should not be banned.- As long as the animal has no long term effects. But before any procedure like this is preformed the vet should explain orally and in writting what the procedure consist of, and the pet owner should have to sign this, acknowledging they understand the procedure and the proper post-procedure care.

YES i think it should happen in all states... no cats should b declawed... if an owner declaws ther cat then they should have the same thing sone to them... the bone tenon and all cut off just like wut happen to the pet.. just so they know how it feels and they can go through the same pain as the cat.. i know we will NOT adopt to an owner that plans on declawing too... but thats a good thing we dont and i like that rule

I think declawing is extremely cruel and should not be done unless absolutely necessary. I do think there are some cases in which declawing the cat may be just about the only option and is certainly better than abandoning the cat to euthanasia or homelessness. I think California should have the right to ban it though if they wish.

i think that this is crap. an animal owner should have the right to do this. it's just like docking a tail or cropping ears. next they will be banning this. i don't totally agree with these types of things but i do think that it should be the owners choice. i mean this is a free contry. it was anyway.

I think declawing an animal is inhumane. It is like cutting off your finger to the first knuckle!! I wished more people would use soft paws. They are inexpensive, and easy to use, and you don't have to put your poor animal through that torture after the fact.

Declawing is not only an unnecessary pain but it is totally CRAZY. It's like telling one of your loved ones OFF WITH YOUR HANDS. It should be outlawed. I've worked for a vet clinic for many years and I hate to see people come in with their litter of kittens to get declawed. Do I think it's wrong... Yes yes and yes!

Declawing should be banned. It is painful and inhumane. If you as a pet owner cannot deal with the nature of a cat, perhaps I can interest you in a pet rock instead. It doesn't claw, crap, or demand attention.
Cats are cats, accept them as they are or leave them alone.

I wish people would become more informed on this topic. Most people that I talk to do not realize that it is in fact an amputation. There are a lot of resources out there to help cat owners deter them from scratching the furniture. In addition to other adverse affects it is also believed that declawed cats sometimes tend to stop using their litter box due after declawing so they end up in a shelter for not using it. When someone decides to adopt a pet they need to realize the possible consequences and then decide. Scratching is a consequence that can come with a cat if they do not look into alternatives. I agree with the statement "the mere convenience to the pet's guardian does not justify the unnecessary pain, anguish and permanent disability caused to the animal.”

Declawing of cats is something I feel we should be able to have done if we chose to do so. There are advanced methods now that are less invasive and allow for faster recovery.

If we want to extend this a little further, if we think that declawing is inhumane, let's just chalk up spay/neuter as inhumane as well!! Declawing is something chosen by pet owners to stop an undesired behavior. I would not own a cat if it was not declawed. My furniture would be clawed up and my curtains in a shamble.

I absolutely think that declawing is wrong. I've seen cats wake up after the procedure and they are miserable. Then the owners aren't smart enough to buy special litter so the cats get really bad infections. What would happen if a declawed cat got loose. They would have no way to defend themselves.

My clinic declaws cats....and...well....it makes me sick. Let's just go ahead and endorse the procedure of debarking dogs while we're at it...that's another annoying habit we need to "fix" instead of solve (that's a joke, btw, I exaggerate). We do use a surgical laser...which I guess makes it...a teensy weensy less barbaric...but I think it's a complete atrocity. I've seen too many go wrong. It really frustrates me when doctors and such actually encourage it...I sometimes wonder if they're just thinking of their pocketbooks. The gross misconceptions on how well the pain meds work and what the cat goes through between the surgery and the owner picking them up...well...I guess what you don't know doesn't hurt you...it just hurts the cat. Bleh, I've just always hated the concept.

I am not for declawing by any means and watch cats get declawed on a daily bases and know how painful it is but banning declawing is not going to help because people will look for illegal ways to do it, and it puts more cats out into the street. If it came down to a cat getting declawed or thrown out i would rather see it declawed. What people need to know is that if they want a cat declawed do it when there young and bounce back well not when there severl years old and heavier I see this all the time declawing older cats and all the problems they have. If there is stuff for them to scratch on and nail trims are done on a regular basis most cats will leave furniture alone People just need to be better educated

I don't agree with declawing a cat. I consider it very cruel. The cat can never go outside without risking its life every time. They have very little defense left. There are so many other alternatives that don't hurt the cat.

I actually thought about having the procedure done; I read up on the "surgery" and pros and cons, I found that not only was the procedure horroble the way in which it was done but the consequences that could result from the procedure such as infection, loss of feeling in the paws up to and including crippling the poor animal.
Needless to say I did not do it nor would I condone!

I think that having a cat declawed is not always wrong, but people should at least wait a certain amount of time before doing a declaw, because not all cats need to be declawed. Many cats that are declawed end up having litter box issues later in life and many people do not know that. Declawing is painful and expensive, and should only be done if absolutely necessary. We have a declaw policy at the shelter I work at and no cat can be declawed until 30 days after the adoption date, that period of time gives the cat an opportuinty to show if it needs to be declawed, and if they do the declaw they can only do the front and NEVER all four! All four declawing is inhumane.

I don't condone declawing at all. I have seen it done and the after effects of traditional declawing looks to be very painful. The newer laser removal does not seem to cause as much pain after the surgery. However, the declawed cats that enter our shelter seem to have more behavioral problems and tend to bite more than the non declawed cats. I guess I would bite too if someone cut off the end of my fingers.

I dont think that is it right to have a cat declawed because even though they might say it doesn't hurt them it might, and also if your cat gets out or something that it doesnt have anyway to deffend its self. If you dont like your cat scrating your furniture get a scratching post! DONT CUT THIER FINGERS OFF

Declawing is wrong. Many movements start in California where people are more open minded and like other issues, I'm sure it will spread. I look forward to the day when people are not permitted to mutilate animals as a matter of course.

The fact is MOST people don't understand what is being done to the cat. They think declawing is just the thing to do.
