Cat Nurses Abandoned Pup
ALABAMA – The staff at the Colbert County Animal shelter found a mother for an orphaned puppy that needed to be weaned – a cat.
The little black pup, small enough to fit in the palm of your hand was dropped off at the shelter in Florence in early December. Animal control workers began searching for an adult dog that just gave birth to wean the orphan but there were none.
They decided to press their luck and try the next best option – a cat. One had been at the shelter for a few weeks and recently had a litter of four kittens.
When the puppy was placed with the cat and her kittens, the mother was very welcoming. Animal Control Director Tommy Morson said the cat took to the puppy right away with no hesitation.
Morson said he recalls similar situations where dogs nursed kittens. Morson said the shelter has formulas for puppies and kittens but prefers that the animals nurse.
Secretary Amanda Helton said the dog will be trained using a litter box. If his future owners don’t treat him differently, she said they’ll have to get him a litter box.
Helton said the puppy nudges and plays with the kittens as if they’re his siblings.
