Castaway Dog Survives 4 Months on Deserted Island

Castaway Dog Survives 4 Months on Deserted Island: Choppy waters off the coast of Australia tossed a family's pet overboard into shark-infested waters. But Sophie Tucker safely swam more than five miles to an island and survived by hunting wild goats.

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA -- A pet dog cast out to sea has been found more than four months after she fell overboard.

The Australian Cattle Dog, named Sophie Tucker, was thrown from her family's boat at the end of November, as the owners navigated the choppy waters off the northeast Queensland coast.

"We hit a rough patch and when we turned around the dog was gone," one of the owners, Jane Griffith, told The Telegraph.

"We were able to back track to look for her, but because it was a gray day, we just couldn't find her and we searched for well over an hour.

"We just thought that once she had hit the water she would have been gone because the wake from the boat was so big."

But Sophie Tucker, named after the famous American vaudeville entertainer, defied the odds by swimming nearly five nautical miles to a nearby, largely deserted island.

After a several month stay on St. Bees Island, Sophie Tucker, then thought to be a wild dog, was picked up by park rangers last week. They suspect Sophie survived the ordeal by hunting and consuming baby goats, given the animals' carcasses they located.

Though the Griffiths say they had basically given up hope that Sophie survived her fall, when they heard that park rangers had found a cattle dog on St. Bees, they contacted the rangers nonetheless.

On Tuesday, the couple met the rangers onshore after they brought the lost dog back to the mainland. They say they were shocked to find Sophie Tucker aboard the boat.

"She surprised us all. She was a house dog and look what she's done, she's swum over five nautical miles, she's managed to live off the land all on her own," Griffiths told The Telegraph. "We wish she could talk, we truly do."

Despite the time away, Sophie reportedly recognized her owners instantly.

"We called the dog and she started whimpering and banging the cage and they let her out and she just about flattened us," Griffith said.

"She wriggled around like a mad thing."

Roughing it on her own supposedly changed Sophie's docile nature, as Griffith told The Australian that the dog had "become quite wild and vicious."

"She wouldn't let anyone go near her or touch her," she said. "She wouldn't take food from anyone."

Now reunited with her owners, Sophie appears to have returned to her old, domesticated self.

"She's settled in well back at home now," Griffith told the Daily Mail. "I think she's appreciating the air conditioning."

Vicki Lomax, a Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, told The Telegraph that Sophie's breed made her better equipped to make do on her own.

"Cattle dogs are probably the most suited type of dog to survive something like this, but it would have been a major ordeal for her," Lomax reportedly said.

"Five nautical miles is an incredibly big distance to swim for any type of dog and I dare say the current would have helped her along a bit, but she is lucky she hasn't been taken by a shark.

"If this had been a Pomeranian, I don't think it would have been a happy ending -- its hair would probably have been too heavy."

The Associated Foreign Press, The Telegraph, The Daily Mail and The Australian contributed to this report.

I'm not surprised about the dogs survival since my 8 lb. dog survived outside for 3 winter months before she adopted me. (She was only 4 lbs. at that point.) I am totally amazed that the cattle dog somehow found her way to an island and one that had fresh water and wildlife. Unless it was a mountainous island how did she even see it? And the fact that she was rescued and reunited with her family is a major miracle.

What a dog! I'm glad to hear she's assuming a more domestic life style now. Hopefully she hasn't turned vicious toward other animals. I always worry when I see dogs on boats. A friend of my sister always takes her dogs out and they stand right on the edge. Any turbulance could send them over!

Seeing dogs at the edge of boats or hanging out of car windows horrifies me. An accident waiting to happen.

Great story, but the headline was deceiving-it sounded as if the dog was deliberately tossed overboard! I'm so glad she was reunited with her family.

What a great story! It makes me wonder what my dogs would have done. Daisy's fat probably would have buoyed her up for 25 miles. By the time she worked off that extra weight, she could just snack on some of her favorites - grass and dirt. She probably would have snuggled with the goats at night instead of eating them.

What a great study into animal behavior. It would nice to see what things help Sophie adjust and replicate that neglected animals as they transition into adoptive families.

Its strange, I read here that someone says some Aussie cattle dogs originated in America. Maybe that person is refering to Aussie Kelpie dogs but they most certainly did not originate in USA, neither did the 'blue heelers',(also red heelers) which is what Sohpie is. I have had kelpies and heelers all my life and they are both bred from a mixture of English and Scottish dogs such as 'Smithfields' and 'Collies' crossed with a touch of dingo. Also, the heelers have a little bull terrier and dalmation in them. Hence the 'blue' hue of the blue heelers. They are fantastic dogs, I am not surprised at what Sophie did. They have everything, looks, personality and marvellous intelligence. They are also the perfect size and make great house pets as well.My present heeler, Daisy is a delight.

Especially after swimming 5 miles...and in the heat...Sophie must have been pretty thirsty.

I imagine she did not drink sea water...or she would be a goner. I wonder if she knew enough not to drink from the ocean by instinct and/or prior experience while with her owners. I wonder how long it took her to find fresh water.

Yes! If only Sophie could speak. The angels were carrying her on that 5 mile swim. Just imagine!?

Blue Heelers sure are a strong breed. When I used to kayak with my dog she always wore an orange life vest. Of course people laughed, but I would not take any chances with my pet. And I'm talking about calm waters of Gulf of Mexico. That family should certainly have taken better precautions with their cattle dog. What a torture that dog must have gone thru. Glad there was finally a happy ending.

"We searched for over an hour". What? I would have searched and searched and searched some more. After researching and reading a different version of this story, I learned that the owners lives were at stake in the choppy water and that's why they called off the search after an hour - a very important point that did not make it into this version of this story. I am amazing by Sophie's ability to survive and so very happy for her and her family. Her ordeal is a perfect case for wearing a doggie lifejacket! Sophie should consider becoming a spokesdog for dog water safety!

Bet the family will use a life jacket on the dog after that ordeal. Microchip would of helped also to contact the family. Glad they heard of a dog being found and everything turned out well at the end.
