Ca. Ranch Home to 400 Neglected Animals

LANCASTER, Ca. - Four-hundred neglected animals were found in what animal welfare workers are calling “deplorable conditions” at a Lancaster, Ca. ranch.

Ivan Callais, the man who allegedly owns the property, could not be located when Department of Animal Care and Control officials arrived at the scene over a week ago. Authorities are currently investigating Callais' whereabouts.

Since then, workers have unearthed a series of animal abuse violations, including poor shelter, lack of proper food and water and much more.

Reports from LA's CBS2 indicate that every animal at the ranch requires some medical attention. Most were taken to a nearby clinic called Animal Acres in Action. Other local groups have come forward to help house the rescues while new homes are found for them.

The animals include dogs, cats, pigs, sheep, goats, turkeys and chickens. One animal welfare worker described the extent of neglect – (PRINT: stating the chickens had gotten into the dog cages, only to be eaten by the hungry canines. He went on to say that dozens of the dogs were pregnant and a wheelbarrow was located filled with dead canines.)

(PRINT:Small amounts of gasoline were found in what little water could be found – it is unclear if poisoning was intended. A lack of adequate shelter was evident – and in Lancaster, tempuratures in recent days have dipped below freezing.)

The DACC has allegedly known about the conditions at the ranch, and made six visits to the property over recent months. No word on why nothing was done until now.

For info on how you can help this situation or to adopt an animal, follow the links below. We're told that many of the rescues are adoptable once they've been given a clean bill of health. Others may have to be euthanized – many were found dead at the site.

Shame on the owner but a bigger shame on the animal control that knew about the situation and did nothing for these poor dogs!

indeed.

if my tax dollars go toward putting food in this man's mouth,
the system really is more flawed than they let us know.

i agree,
tie him up and let him fend for himself.

son of a bitch.

Six visits to the shelter is five too many knowing how many animals were suffering there.

I can't understand why they made six visits before anything was done. Some of the animals could have survived if action was taken when they first heard about the conditions at the ranch.

These people need to do some serious jail time. When are we as a society going to have a zero tolerance for animal abuse? At least they are getting some positive attention now.

Those poor animals. How can the owners sit back and not take care of them

Why were these people allowed to treat these animals like this? i hope justice is served and they are severly punished, not just fined! That does nothing. This is really cruel and inhumane.

If people can no longer care for their pets, then they should surrender them to someone who can. What's wrong with the organization that knew this was happening? Why'd it take them so long to do anything about it? What a shame!!!

This behavior by the property owner is unjustifiable and deplorable. Gasoline in the water? Dead dogs in a wheelbarrow. How did it get this bad without someone taking action sooner? I realize that there are a limited number of Animal Cruelty officers in force. Maybe that is part of the problem. Maybe we need to focus some funding in that area and prevent this type of cruelty and the spread of disease.

This is horrible. Why don't people take care of their pets or just give them away? I can't believe there was gas in their water, that is just awful.

How sad! Why would someone have all of these animals if they didn't even plan on taking care of them! What a disgrace. I seriously wonder about people sometimes. I hope that all these animals find loving homes.

I don't understand how they could ignore the problem on previous visits if it was this bad. Hopefully, they will catch and charge the person responsible for all of these neglected animals. How awful!

Isn't the fact that the DACC knew about the animals abuse too? I am a mandated reporter. If I know something is happening to a child and I don't do anything about it, I can face charges! What is the difference in the DACC and Ivan?

There shouldn't be any difference. Our humane officers must report signs of any abuse, child or otherwise when investigating animal abuse. And they have.
