Cancer Pooch Wins 20th World’s Ugliest Dog Contest

Browse News

PETALUMA, Calif. -- The winner of Saturday’s World’s Ugliest Dog Contest is the subject of a beautiful story, a hairless Chinese crested canine named Gus, who lost a leg to a skin tumor and had an eye taken out by a tomcat during a fight.

Gus’ owner, Jeanenne Teed of St. Petersburg, Fla., says the $500 first prize will go toward the dog’s chemotherapy. Teed and her 16-year-old daughter, Janey, rescued Gus from the garage of a home where he was being kept in a crate.

“I’m just in shock,” Jeanenne Teed said. “We came so far and are so happy that we can put the winnings toward Gus’ radiation treatment. We’re just thrilled.”

The contest, held at the Sonoma-Marin Fair, began in 1989. In recent years, winners have been dogs which were abandoned or neglected before being adopted.

“It’s sort of a media phenomenon, frankly,” said

Vicky DeArmon, the fair’s marketing director and contest coordinator. “You have to have a sense of humor to appreciate the contest, and appreciate the uniqueness of the dogs.

“You also have to be a dog lover because these owners love their dogs intensely.

“And they’re probably the most cared for dogs on earth,” DeArmon added, laughing. “Several of (the owners) don’t even like to fly here because they don’t want to subject their dog to being on an airplane, or whatever.”

This year’s contest featured 12 entrants, some not only from Florida but Arizona and New Jersey. Any dog can be considered for entry.

“A lot of people are concerned, ‘Oh, are the animals, are they just being made fun of?’ ” she said. “And they’re not. They’re being really honored for their uniqueness, and that’s really the heart of the contest.”

This year’s judges included a local reporter, City Council member and the Sonoma-Marin Fair’s board president, all dog owners and dog lovers, DeArmon says.

Qualities the judges consider include weird, crossed or sad-sack eyes, a droopy or crooked tail, an odd colored or unruly coat, a jutting jaw, severe under bite and buck teeth.

This year’s contest was more popular than ever, DeArmon says.

“The ability to see how it’s grown is really how much media attention there is now on it,” she said. “Gus made The O’Reilly Factor and he was on The Today Show.”

The contest holds separate rounds for pure breeds and mutts, with the winners competing for Ugliest Dog of 2008. That dog then goes against the Ring of Champions, former winners of the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest, with that winner named the new World’s Ugliest Dog.

Sam, a Chinese crested mix, won Ugliest Dog three straight years starting in 2003. Last year’s winner was Elwood, a Chinese crested and Chihuahua mix.

Gus and his owners had a unique advantage over the other competitors, DeArmon says.

“They’ve been trying to raise enough money for his chemotherapy,” she said. “So he won not only for really that he was homely, but really for his story. That’s kind of what was compelling to the judges this year.”

I am so glad Gus won and can use the money towards his chemotherapy and I hope he can be cured! I think these contests are great because it shows that what some consider 'ugly' are beautiful to others! Me? I prefer a homely dog over a 'pretty' dog. :)

I'm glad the "ugly" ones have their day to shine! It's very popular, and couldnt be a better winner than Sam's owners. At least they will have some help with his vet bills.

Oh my gosh. Does it really matter what the name of the contest is? They can call it what ever they want for all I care. As long as it is a fun way for pets lovers to interact and show of their babies. While the pets and owners are having fun the contest is promoting responsible pet ownership and raising money for the good of the dogs. I have seen this on TV before and most of these dogs truly come from a bad situation in to a home where they are the center of the world and get more love and attention than anything I have ever seen. Any contest that takes notice of these animals and awards the owners for the good they have brought to these dogs life is an A+ in my book. No matter what the name of the contest is!!!

What a great story. I watched part of this contest on tv one year and it is a hoot. The owners are truly proud of their "unique" pooches. So glad these folks are getting help with the chemo--it can be a real drain.

I've seen a few people say they don't like the term "ugliest" dog; however, I don't think this competition would be half as successful or highly recognized without the term. I know I wouldn't have been nearly as curious if it was the "most unique" dog competition. Maybe "weirdest looking dog" would work as well...

Anyone else think it would cost at least $500 to get from Florida to California? There goes the money for his chemo. Unless what they really wanted was the publicity so they could get donations.

I think this is great. It's nice that this dog was saved and has such a great family to love him. Come on, he would have had a tough time getting adopted at a shelter. I'm glad someone loves him!

Would we like to see an ugly baby contest or Miss Ugly America? Funny if you think about it. Probably great ratings but who would want to enter.

Gus is a winner in anyone's book! He's precious! You can tell he's been through so much (ditto for his person), but that he keeps digging down and finding more strength to keep fighting for his life. I agree that "ugly" does not describe this canine sweetie! He looks like a very huggable kind of fellow! Two paws up, Gus! We love ya!

I'm glad the winnings will go toward the vet bills. I think perhaps the worlds strangest looking or unique looking dog would be better a better title but I guess calling them ugly is catchier for the media. I don't thing any dog is ugly.

There is no such thing as an ugly dog, they might look a little peculiar but that makes them more lovable and they stand out.

chinese cresteds always win the ugliest dog competition. They're one of the most expensive breeds, too...what does that say about our taste in pets?

I'm not crazy about having an "ugly contest," either, but if there weren't one Gus wouldn't have money to put toward radiation. So at least something good happens.

Honestly, I've never been too keen on the Ugliest Dog thing. I realize it's all in good humor, but I've never felt comfortable with any contests where the most negative or repulsive traits wins the pot. The word Ugly brings to mind things most negative. Looking beyond that, and realizing that this rationalization is far beyond a dog to comprehend, I am glad that the winning pot will go toward a positive cause! I cannot imagine what chemo for a dog must cost & any help is, I'm sure, greatly appreciated.

As much as I'm not too keen on the name of the contest,I can see the humor of it.
I know though for a fact, that normally people who own pets that are "challenged",or deemed ugly, are usually people that truly do love them, and give them the moon,as you have to be a very special person to look past the negatives that come from people who just don't understand ,or are just ignorant.
Beauty is really in the eyes of the beholder. I can look at every animal and find real beauty. Our society needs to get past all the judging, that's for sure.
