Calif. Group Brings Life-saving Model to Global Shelters

Browse News

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. -- A major dilemma of many animal loving shelter employees is the inability to find alternatives to euthanasia. A California shelter aims to change that, and by doing so set an example the world can follow.

Mike Arms is the president of Helen Woodward Animal Center. His mission is to save the life of every orphaned animal.

“This little puppy, she’s 20 pounds already,” said Arms as he held the pup. “She was rescued from Arizona, came across state lines just so she could have another chance of life and we are willing to give it to her.”

He’s dedicated to finding the little pooch a safe and happy home -- a task that is often mired by a lack of human compassion.

“We know that adopting a pet - this is a life saving business and we run it as a business,” he said. “You are not going to get families to adopt unless they know that these great little animals are here. So we use the media a lot to promote the animals through special programs.”

Each week, Arms’ animals get their 15 seconds of fame on TV. The effort, said Arms, is geared toward giving exposure to animals that have never been given a chance.

“…We do not devalue our animals, if you want to adopt this little animal; it will cost you $230. She is worth something,” he explained during an interview with Pet Pulse.

While serving as Director of the North Shore Animal League, his previous animal-saving role, Arms created two major programs to increase adoptions and awareness. Pet Adopt-a-thon and Home for the Holidays helped more than 400,000 animals find homes during his 20 year tenure there.

He’s applied the same principles at Helen Woodward Animal Center, creating new ways to raise funds and save lives.

One such program, a Surf-a-Thon competition, pits brave canines against one another on California’s shores.

Last year, 40 dogs competed, raising $40,000. This year, the HWAC will host surf camps for dogs to get them ready for the competition. It’s an all-around good time with a great outcome -- saving animals’

But that’s not all HWAC does for its’ animals.

“We service about 20,000 people in our community with our pet encounter therapy as well,” said an HWAC employee. “We also have a huge equine facility and education programs with critter camp and those actually allow us to generate more funds for the facility to keep it running.”

Every other month, HWAC invites shelter workers around the world to come for a three-day conference. It’s part of their Animal Center Educational Services program, through which other shelter workers learn more about the business of saving lives.

“We started inviting organizations here to teach them how to fundraise so they can have money to help the orphans,” said Arms. “We teach them how to market, so they can increase their adoptions through the media, increase adoptions and decrease euthanasia.”

And that’s not all. The conference provides training on setting up day camps for kids to learn about animals – a revenue boosting venture.

“We teach them how to recruit and manage volunteers,” he said “… everything from A to Z about animal shelters so we can make the world a better place for animals.”

The weekend conference is free, and in the last two years, shelter workers from as far as India, China, and Egypt, have learned about becoming a no-kill shelter.

And the program continues to grow.

“I take what I do very seriously,” said Arms. “Those lives are very precious.”

Kudos galore to Mike Arms & HWAC for really making a difference in animal rescue. If only one "humane society" switches its focus to "rescue and placement" then all the work is well worth the effort! I'm going to find a way to get some of our rescue workers to training at HWAC some time this year. Thanks for all of your hard work on behalf of the thousands of homeless animals who are just waiting to be someone's beloved pet.

Hey, my local television station USED to do this during the noon-time program, but they've ceased showing animals on the air. I need to find out what happened, send them an e-mail or something. Eureka!

wow, that is absolutely amazing. i would LOVE to attend one of those conventions. i may have to think hard about that and try it out. $230 for a puupy is awesome, people will pay a breeder $700 for a cat that's "hypo-allergenic" but they'd balk buying a "used" pet for $230? people need more sense.

This is a great program! Our shelter is very poor in comparison, but does some very cool things too. Linda (the director) is on TV every Monday morning, with an adoptable pet and information on fundraising. They have all kinds of activities to get the community involved and ususally, the community turns out!

I think it is a great program we need to be educated for sures cuz so many people do not know and think its just getting a dog and there is so many that breed the dogs to sell (this is my opinion) about bringing more animals into this world it is sad so many sufferings and homeless abused pets already here and so many that are euthunized, When I first became a pet owner I did not know any better and I wanted my furgirl to have puppie cuz I figured they would be so adorable but once I started watching how so many dogs suffered in the tv, internet, real life, when I first visited a shelter I cried and wanted to bring all those dogs home they just look at you like pick me take me with you so I did research and educated myself. so yes this is great what they are doing and the price is a lil steep but pets are worth it!and it is better than buying from puppy mill, breeders ect.

i belive that what the chick before me is trying to say is that we all need to care for our animals, shelters are good but they arent someone people just dont care about animals like others do. spading and neutering animals is cruel, animals like dogs and cats are what bring families and friends closer and its a shame that people spade and neuter animals, they are just like humans, they have feelings too.

Wow...valuing our animals...what a "no brainer" idea that seems to be working. I hope they don't see so many numbers that they can no longer handle the load. We still need to educate everyone about spaying and neutering our animals.

What a great program, since they are toughing nations across the ocean from us. I concur they should charge a moderate price for these sweet creatures so they do not end up in the wrong place.

I'm glad to hear this I hope his program continues to go well. I just adopted a full grown lab last month. He's a wonderful dog. We had alot of people ask us how much the adoption fees were. When I told them they were like Oh my if I want to get a dog I'll just get a free one out of the paper or buy a pure bred for that price. While I don't think the donation is to much I think many people do.

Adoption is a great way to get a great pet. More people should consider it instead of supporting Puppy Mills and Backyard Breeders. It is great that this shelter is teaching others how they can be successful so that more animals are available for adoption.

I believe that the adoption fee is a bit high. At the shelter in my town, cat adoptions are $5 and dog adoptions are $20. Why would I pay that amount when I could, and have, gone locally. I'm still saving a life. They are still grateful. And I am still rewarded with those facts.

That is actually not a high fee. It is the about average for the whole US. I adopted my first dog for $200 and my second for $350. For both of them these fees included their neuters, all up to date vaccinations, heartworm treatments, grooming and microchips. The shelters also have to feed and house these animals while they are there. They are not making a profit by any means.

This is a great idea but $230 to save an animal is a bit high, there are plenty of people who would make great forever homes but do not have that kind of money.

A lot of animals cost that or more anyway. So it's not that much. If someone is willing to spen a lot of money on a new puppy, why not spend less and save an animals life?

Great program. The more people that are aware of what happens to animals, the better. There are always bound to be other people that are willing to help, and more people would increase the chances of finding people like that.

I hate euthanasia- millions of animals die just because they don't have a real home. It is only OK if the animal is really suffering.
