Calif. Group Brings Life-saving Model to Global Shelters

Browse News

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. -- A major dilemma of many animal loving shelter employees is the inability to find alternatives to euthanasia. A California shelter aims to change that, and by doing so set an example the world can follow.

Mike Arms is the president of Helen Woodward Animal Center. His mission is to save the life of every orphaned animal.

“This little puppy, she’s 20 pounds already,” said Arms as he held the pup. “She was rescued from Arizona, came across state lines just so she could have another chance of life and we are willing to give it to her.”

He’s dedicated to finding the little pooch a safe and happy home -- a task that is often mired by a lack of human compassion.

“We know that adopting a pet - this is a life saving business and we run it as a business,” he said. “You are not going to get families to adopt unless they know that these great little animals are here. So we use the media a lot to promote the animals through special programs.”

Each week, Arms’ animals get their 15 seconds of fame on TV. The effort, said Arms, is geared toward giving exposure to animals that have never been given a chance.

“…We do not devalue our animals, if you want to adopt this little animal; it will cost you $230. She is worth something,” he explained during an interview with Pet Pulse.

While serving as Director of the North Shore Animal League, his previous animal-saving role, Arms created two major programs to increase adoptions and awareness. Pet Adopt-a-thon and Home for the Holidays helped more than 400,000 animals find homes during his 20 year tenure there.

He’s applied the same principles at Helen Woodward Animal Center, creating new ways to raise funds and save lives.

One such program, a Surf-a-Thon competition, pits brave canines against one another on California’s shores.

Last year, 40 dogs competed, raising $40,000. This year, the HWAC will host surf camps for dogs to get them ready for the competition. It’s an all-around good time with a great outcome -- saving animals’

But that’s not all HWAC does for its’ animals.

“We service about 20,000 people in our community with our pet encounter therapy as well,” said an HWAC employee. “We also have a huge equine facility and education programs with critter camp and those actually allow us to generate more funds for the facility to keep it running.”

Every other month, HWAC invites shelter workers around the world to come for a three-day conference. It’s part of their Animal Center Educational Services program, through which other shelter workers learn more about the business of saving lives.

“We started inviting organizations here to teach them how to fundraise so they can have money to help the orphans,” said Arms. “We teach them how to market, so they can increase their adoptions through the media, increase adoptions and decrease euthanasia.”

And that’s not all. The conference provides training on setting up day camps for kids to learn about animals – a revenue boosting venture.

“We teach them how to recruit and manage volunteers,” he said “… everything from A to Z about animal shelters so we can make the world a better place for animals.”

The weekend conference is free, and in the last two years, shelter workers from as far as India, China, and Egypt, have learned about becoming a no-kill shelter.

And the program continues to grow.

“I take what I do very seriously,” said Arms. “Those lives are very precious.”

It is great that they are sharing their information and ideas. It would be great if more shelters could get training and help others out too. The more awareness and education there is, the better it is for everyone.

I'm so happy to hear this. I went to school near Rancho Santa Fe and (many years ago) the area relied heavily on a very old fashioned pound.

Yes, every shelter does what it can. Small shelters may need to spend most of their time raising funds to stay in business

The goal is get as many animal out as possible but into good homes. Its so hard in an inner city to find enough good homes so advertising and posting is so important

Finding innovative ways to bring the plight of shelter animals to the public is important. It may be marketing 101 as the previous post suggests but how many shelters are having the success he is having? There are a lot of very good people taking care of shelter animals, we need to help them by finding equally good marketers and fundraisers so we can, ultimately, put the shelters out of business. No more stray or unwanted animals, no more shelters.

He certainly brings nothing new to the table. It is publicity and marketing 101 and finding creative ways to bring the animal to the attention of the public.
Sorry Mike- I am not impressed but I applaud your efforts to place more homeless animals. That is a goal for all of us in the field.

They are setting the bar for all other shelters to follow. The goal is to decrease and then totally eliminate euthanasia. Good for them!

This fellow is very creative in his efforts to save animals. IT would be wonderful if
our shelter could become a no kill shelter as his .An inspiration to others that there
are new and better ways to save our animals because they deserve it. Until you have
loved an animal , a part of ones soul remains unawakened-Anatole France.

I believe all animals are created by God for a reason and they deserve to have a life as we do. They give us unconditional love and we should give back to them our love, compassion and care.

Mike Arms is a great asset to the animals there. I am going to save this article & ask my local shelter if their employees can attend the next conference. No kill shelters is the way to go. We should all strive to get our shelters to that point! More power to Mike. What a great guy for doing what he believes in with such passion.

Great story & great concepts - I don't know where Rancho Sante Fe is located and how close to media outlets they are - here in our very little town we have no television or radio coverage to help with fundraising on a scale like this. We have a great regional daily newspaper & a couple of local weekly papers that offer us as much space as they can but to compete on a large level with fundraising - boy , even if they teach me all their best tricks I can't see them working here. NOW the programs they have established and have working are wonderful and I applaud them for what they have done - great service to the animals and their community!!

This is great. It should be a federal law that no animal be put down in shelters or pounds or anywhere unless it has been approved by a panel of vets, no-kill shelter management due to illness or aggressiveness that can't be tamed.

If I could, I would go to the conference. I would really love to learn more about fundraising to save the animals at our shelter.

I do love the word "orphan" instead of using the word "stray", that is one thing I can take with me and start using now.

I love that they're utlilizing the media to save lives, and teaching other shelters how to make the most of their local outlets and fundraisers. It's great that they're sharing their knowledge with others, and working to improve shelters across the globe to eliminate the need for euthanasia in doing so.

First of all, I love any shelter who helps other shelters. They are teaching how to improve. You can take the information and use it or not. But they are offering it.

I love the surf a thon. that is really cool. What a great story.

I love this program and I wish more shelters implimented it! They should be contacting shelters and schools or homes for disabled children and adults. I would bet that many would be interested in having a therapy pet or two in their facility. Anyone who owns a pet can testify to the therapy a pet can give just by being themselves.
