Bush Pardons Turkey, Killer of Bald Eagles

Browse News

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- With less than two months left in office, President George W. Bush is beginning to extend an increasing number of pardons to humans and fowl alike.

President Bush has announced his decision to pardon 14 people, bringing his total number of pardons to 171.

Included in the list of drug dealers and money embezzlers is Leslie Owen Collier, who pleaded guilty in 1995 to unlawfully killing three bald eagles in Charleston, Mo.

Collier was convicted for violating the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act after he placed pesticides in hamburger meat. While hoping to kill coyotes in his area, he wound up taking the lives of various other animals, including the bald eagles.

Though he can't bring the endangered eagles back to life, President Bush will spare one other equally coveted bird, which Benjamin Franklin once proposed for the United States' national symbol: the turkey.

Today Bush will publicly forgo one Thanksgiving turkey, carrying out a White House tradition that has held strong since President Harry S. Truman first pardoned a bird in 1947.

This year's lucky turkey has already traveled to the capital from his native Ellsworth, Iowa. At 20-weeks and 45-pounds, the bird was raised using "normal feeding and other production techniques," according to a White House release.

"The one exception is they were provided increased interaction with people so they would be prepared for their role at the White House Ceremony," the release reads.

Following the ceremony, the turkey will be flown first class to the Disneyland resort in Southern California, where he will be grand marshal of Disney's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

People can vote on the turkey's name on the White House's website, WhiteHouse.gov. Some proposed options include Popcorn, Roost, Apple, Dawn and Pumpkin.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin also pardoned a turkey in her native Wasilla last week, while displaying a grizzly scene many succulent turkeys are likely to encounter tomorrow.

"I, Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska, anticipating and hoping that in the spirit of Thanksgiving, Alaskans everywhere will find adequate nourishment elsewhere and without this particular turkey I do hereby grant Thanksgiving a full amnesty and pardon," said Palin, before selecting the spared bird from a flock.

As she spoke, however, video cameras also picked up a farm worker behind her, methodically feeding birds into a grinder.

Now jokingly dubbed "Turkeygate" by some media outlets, the video of Palin taking questions from a local station, while apparently oblivious to the "carnage" ensuing behind her, has garnered more than two million views on YouTube.

Palin's spokesperson responded to the incident -- and the attention it has received -- on Tuesday.

"The [Alaska] governor didn't know it was going on behind her," the unnamed spokesperson told Entertainment Tonight.

"We're not happy about it and the station is not happy either. This was an attempt to lighten up and do something non-controversial."

Kind of ironic - pardon a turkey and a bald eagle killer all at the same time.

I AGREE!!!!! I'm so tired of politics in everything! And the article tying the 2 pardons together is something the writer did - not President Bush.

I think the pardons is a tradition when any president is leaving the whitehouse. I have no problem with pardoning the man re: the bald eagles. I think if it happened in 1995 and it was not truly eagles he was targeting, he has served his time. As far as Busch, I don't think he has been given credit for good things he has done, and I think people are in a dream state if they think Obama will be any better. I think he is all talk and we will be in a bigger mess in this nation than it has ever been in.

It's hard to see the good things Bush did when there was only a few that come to mind. I guess it depends on which side of the political pendulum your swining on.

When a president has done so many things wrong the things they did right become "lost." He did do a few things right but this country was no where near the mess its in prior to his being in office eight years ago. I think Obama will have his hands full and it will take years--maybe all four to help these now global disasters we have. I do think the key is surrounding yourself with folks smarter than yourself in each department and Obama, so far is doing a better job at that. We can only hope.

Of course George Bush pardoned the killer of bald eagles--he and his Administration are responsible for the deaths of countless wolves and bears and birds and prairie dogs and wild horses etc. etc. etc.

So the turkey is 20 weeks old and weighs 45 pounds using "normal feeding and other production techniques". I don't think so AND what happens to the turkey after Disney's Thanksgiving Day Parade?

On West Wing (a fictional show about the White house) the pardoned turkey is sent to a petting zoo. I hope that is what will happen with this one.

I always chuckle when the annual 'pardoning of the turkeys' is done. That turkey or sometimes turkeys go on to live a cushy existence in an animal sanctuary or park somewhere.

I could go on forever about this idiot of a president but if he was going to pardon anyone. It should of been border patrol agents Ramos and Campeon. Instead he pardons drug dealers and embezzlers. It just goes to show what kind of a man he truly is!

I really find the poisoning of wildlife reprehensible ~ not only is it a painful and terrible way to die, but it is also indiscriminate, killing not just the "target" animal, but anything that happens to find the bait. In any case, it should be against the law. Period.

Once again Bush proves to be a joke. Why on earth would you pardon someone that willingly killed three bald eagles. I wonder how much money tax payers had to pay to fly the turkey to FL.

I knew the turkey pardon event was coming up--though nothing will beat the Palin turkey film--and I was actually most worried that this turkey would go through all he has to be ready for the big day and then Barney would eat him right in front of the camera. Thank God the little guy find reporter tastier than turkey!

Do I have to disuss this topic in order to get points. It's just stupid politicking and excuse for publicity, photo ops, etc.
As for the HUMAN pardons, I'm all for them. Even though I'm one of those atheistic east coast lapsed Catholics, I do see the humanity in the injunction: "Let those without sin...."

the bald eagle killer, should not be pardon. I don't like that, at the end of a presidency, that president can pardon whoever he feels like.
