Bush Pardons Turkey, Killer of Bald Eagles

Browse News

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- With less than two months left in office, President George W. Bush is beginning to extend an increasing number of pardons to humans and fowl alike.

President Bush has announced his decision to pardon 14 people, bringing his total number of pardons to 171.

Included in the list of drug dealers and money embezzlers is Leslie Owen Collier, who pleaded guilty in 1995 to unlawfully killing three bald eagles in Charleston, Mo.

Collier was convicted for violating the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act after he placed pesticides in hamburger meat. While hoping to kill coyotes in his area, he wound up taking the lives of various other animals, including the bald eagles.

Though he can't bring the endangered eagles back to life, President Bush will spare one other equally coveted bird, which Benjamin Franklin once proposed for the United States' national symbol: the turkey.

Today Bush will publicly forgo one Thanksgiving turkey, carrying out a White House tradition that has held strong since President Harry S. Truman first pardoned a bird in 1947.

This year's lucky turkey has already traveled to the capital from his native Ellsworth, Iowa. At 20-weeks and 45-pounds, the bird was raised using "normal feeding and other production techniques," according to a White House release.

"The one exception is they were provided increased interaction with people so they would be prepared for their role at the White House Ceremony," the release reads.

Following the ceremony, the turkey will be flown first class to the Disneyland resort in Southern California, where he will be grand marshal of Disney's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

People can vote on the turkey's name on the White House's website, WhiteHouse.gov. Some proposed options include Popcorn, Roost, Apple, Dawn and Pumpkin.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin also pardoned a turkey in her native Wasilla last week, while displaying a grizzly scene many succulent turkeys are likely to encounter tomorrow.

"I, Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska, anticipating and hoping that in the spirit of Thanksgiving, Alaskans everywhere will find adequate nourishment elsewhere and without this particular turkey I do hereby grant Thanksgiving a full amnesty and pardon," said Palin, before selecting the spared bird from a flock.

As she spoke, however, video cameras also picked up a farm worker behind her, methodically feeding birds into a grinder.

Now jokingly dubbed "Turkeygate" by some media outlets, the video of Palin taking questions from a local station, while apparently oblivious to the "carnage" ensuing behind her, has garnered more than two million views on YouTube.

Palin's spokesperson responded to the incident -- and the attention it has received -- on Tuesday.

"The [Alaska] governor didn't know it was going on behind her," the unnamed spokesperson told Entertainment Tonight.

"We're not happy about it and the station is not happy either. This was an attempt to lighten up and do something non-controversial."

I find it kinda funny how everyone takes this as an opportunity to bash Bush, when this annual Turkey Pardoning started as an informal tradition in 1947 with Harry Truman, every president has done it since then, but most of the comments I have read here make it sound like it is some idiotic thing that Bush thought up.

I am disappointed that I allow myself to be so easily lured into these debates with you, but as I've seen a plethora of comments from you touting YOUR agenda/beliefs, I thought I might point out the hypocrisy of your condemnation.

The annual turkey pardoning is pretty silly - have never understood why it's done when dead, cooked turkeys are the traditional Thanksgiving fare. Pardoning the eagle killer I don't agree with. It sends a message that shouldn't be sent. Tho' he may not have meant to harm the eagles, common sense should prevail when trying to bait animals that are preying on livestock.

Pardoning turkeys does no good because they get shipped off to be on display at Disney World where they die within months of arrival. The reason why there are two turkeys pardoned each year is in case the one dies (there is a spare). These turkeys are bred to only live a short life, and their body weight becomes so heavy that their bodies cannot support it. If human babies were to grow at the same rate slaughter turkeys grow, by the time the baby is 18 months old it would weight 1200 lbs!

Oh my goodness...I hadn't thought of it in quite the same way. Of course I think the thing is stupid -- just a gimmick and I'm not quite sure for what purpose. I don't mind people eating turkey, I just think they should have to hunt them rather than buying them in the grocery store. I think most people have forgotten where the meat section of the store comes from!!

I think turkey pardoning is silly, because it doesn't do anything to save the thousands of other turkeys that are killed this time of year.

Didn't mean to ruffle any feathers! :) I know it is a tradition and it doesn't matter who is doing it. I guess my thought is why spend so much money on something like this now when the economy is bad. You can still have tradition but make small changes. Why fly a turkey first class? I just think it is time we look at bit more closely at how we are using are resources.

I guess it's a nice tradition to pardon a turkey. Wish that it wasn't just a symbolic act, and that everyone could refrain from killing and eating animals. I didn't know Ben Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird. Then would we be stuffing and eating bald eagles at Thanksgiving?

I don't think that any of us really like to think about the turkey that gave up their life to be our dinner on Thanksgiving. I know that my family has cut way down on red meat - with some of us giving it up completely. But we still eat fish and fowl. Again, we are animals lover so thinking about this is not pleasant.

This whole pardoning of the turkey thing is really strange. I just don't get why people continue to write about it. It happens every year and is done by the president, governors, heck, maybe even mayors. But turkey continues to be the stereotypical meal for Thanksgiving. Ok, so you're pardoned but the turkey right next to you and 500,000 more are going to die for the holiday. It's just strange. Why put on a show about it?

Have seen this "turkey pardon" for many years - just a silly tradition. Have never understood some of the other presidential pardons. This guy, putting out poisoned meat for coyotes, obviously didn't have a brain that other animals might eat it as well. Sad to think that any animal would have to die a slow death due to pesticide poisoning. I would not have pardoned him just because he didn't have the brains to think through all ramifications. Hopefullly, Bush won't do much more damage before he's out of office!

The rest of their lives will be short lived, these turkeys are bred for being a source of food, they most likely wont live a year because they are fed so much to grow so big in time for Thanksgiving.
