Bush Pardons Turkey, Killer of Bald Eagles

Browse News

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- With less than two months left in office, President George W. Bush is beginning to extend an increasing number of pardons to humans and fowl alike.

President Bush has announced his decision to pardon 14 people, bringing his total number of pardons to 171.

Included in the list of drug dealers and money embezzlers is Leslie Owen Collier, who pleaded guilty in 1995 to unlawfully killing three bald eagles in Charleston, Mo.

Collier was convicted for violating the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act after he placed pesticides in hamburger meat. While hoping to kill coyotes in his area, he wound up taking the lives of various other animals, including the bald eagles.

Though he can't bring the endangered eagles back to life, President Bush will spare one other equally coveted bird, which Benjamin Franklin once proposed for the United States' national symbol: the turkey.

Today Bush will publicly forgo one Thanksgiving turkey, carrying out a White House tradition that has held strong since President Harry S. Truman first pardoned a bird in 1947.

This year's lucky turkey has already traveled to the capital from his native Ellsworth, Iowa. At 20-weeks and 45-pounds, the bird was raised using "normal feeding and other production techniques," according to a White House release.

"The one exception is they were provided increased interaction with people so they would be prepared for their role at the White House Ceremony," the release reads.

Following the ceremony, the turkey will be flown first class to the Disneyland resort in Southern California, where he will be grand marshal of Disney's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

People can vote on the turkey's name on the White House's website, WhiteHouse.gov. Some proposed options include Popcorn, Roost, Apple, Dawn and Pumpkin.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin also pardoned a turkey in her native Wasilla last week, while displaying a grizzly scene many succulent turkeys are likely to encounter tomorrow.

"I, Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska, anticipating and hoping that in the spirit of Thanksgiving, Alaskans everywhere will find adequate nourishment elsewhere and without this particular turkey I do hereby grant Thanksgiving a full amnesty and pardon," said Palin, before selecting the spared bird from a flock.

As she spoke, however, video cameras also picked up a farm worker behind her, methodically feeding birds into a grinder.

Now jokingly dubbed "Turkeygate" by some media outlets, the video of Palin taking questions from a local station, while apparently oblivious to the "carnage" ensuing behind her, has garnered more than two million views on YouTube.

Palin's spokesperson responded to the incident -- and the attention it has received -- on Tuesday.

"The [Alaska] governor didn't know it was going on behind her," the unnamed spokesperson told Entertainment Tonight.

"We're not happy about it and the station is not happy either. This was an attempt to lighten up and do something non-controversial."

I agree Marla. I posted a comment 1 day ago and they jumped on it like flies on a ......well anyway. We should be able to voice our opinions just as loudly as they do. Never let anyone silence your freedom of speech because if you do...then what do we have? Yep, a government taking away all of our freedoms as we know them now. Speak out! It's our right as well as theirs.

I have no problem with zootoo's policies. My problem is with a particular person who constantly attacks people for having opinions she differs with. We all know who this person is. I feel completely comfortable with the discussions I've responded to, or subsequently initiated. Not once, however, have I flagged her opinions, divisive though they may be.

How do you know that it is the person you think it is? From what I've seen Cully, she (if we are speaking of the same person) has stood her ground, and answered your posts direct towards her, and others that differ from yours. To single one person out because YOU believe it to be them doesn't seem to be the answer either. I've flagged peoples posts before for various reasons, and never posted to the OP before having them flagged. That would be a waste of time, and further clutter the board with something that doesn't further the debate of the topic at hand. I have flagged posts mainly because they go WAY off topic and don't add to the debate on the article. I know we don't see eye to eye on certain subjects, so be it. I've had posts pulled after debates with you in the past, but I never accused you for flagging them. First, I don't know for a fact you're the one that had it pulled. Second, it would just be having a debate over something that is in the past, and I'm not going to cry over spilt milk. Finally, if ZooToo pulls anything, they have their reasons (whether I like them or not), and maybe that is a clue for me to be less combative, watch my language, make sure I'm not attacking/targeting individuals. I'm not going to cry that I'm being "censored" and my Freedom of Speech is violated. I'm also not going to cry about people targeting me with having things deleted, when I agreed to Zootoo's T&C on the way I conduct myself, and posting items.

Skippy - I say this in all sincerity... if I were going to flag anyone's post, it would have been someone else's. To my knowledge, I have never flagged anyone, but if I did, perhaps it was in my first week or something before I knew any better. I don't even remember you. You claim to have proof of this - as I GENUINELY do not remember EVER flagging anyone, if you provide me with said proof, I will publicly apologize. Again, I don't ever remember even reading one of your posts. And like I said, there is another person that if I were going to flag, it would be them - but I don't.

It's been a tradition to pardon a turkey(s) during Thanksgiving since 1989 the first President Bush "officially pardoned a turkey (it's said Harry Truman pardoned the turkey given to him in 1947, but the Truman Library has been unable to find any evidence of this. Another story claims the tradition dates back to Abraham Lincoln pardoning his son Tad's pet turkey). So this isn't something new, and either is the pardoning of people that have violated protection acts against animals. In 1999 Clinton pardoned "Harry" the turkey, and then went on to grant pardons to Howard Winfield Riddle, who had violated the Lacey Act (receipt of illegally imported animal skins), and Peggy Ann Bargon who violated the Lacey Act and violation of the Bald Eagle Protection Act.
I'm aware that this is now 2008, and president Bush is on his way out, and Obama is in, but the tone of the article seems to suggest that this is something new with the pardoning of Leslie Owen Collier. It also seems to me that ZooToo is taking cues from the rest of the MSM on the way they report.

So you have no problem with Shrub pardoning a guy who killed 3 bald eagles? I don't think Obama would do that. Pardoning the turkey is a tradition that has been around for many years, Shrub is just doing what the others did and I have no problem with that, but I have a BIG problem with many other things he's done.

Maybe you should educate yourself on the case. He was trying to kill coyotes, yes coyotes. When the coyotes died, the bald eagles fed on them, and subsequently died. While he didn’t go to jail, he was ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution. Bush pardoned someone that wasn't even in jail. The only benefit Collier got from the pardon, was that as a convicted felon, he couldn't own guns. Everyone should educate themselves before they comment on articles they obviously have no knowledge of.

Why does zootoo allow one person person to continually flag people who post their opinions on this story. Isn't that the point is? Yet she has flagged anyone who has a political comment on the story even if it's in good taste. Does one person have that much power on zootoo to flag opinions they simply don't want to hear?

A grinder???!!! Heavens. I knew there was a reason G*d created Tofurky...

And w/r/t the eagle killer, the fact that he wanted to kill coyotes instead makes it oh-so-OK...

The pardoned turkey, did he have his upper beak removed and his toenails when just a poult, as factory turkeys undergo? Can he eat normally and walk, too? Nice to pardon him, but unless they were to pardon them earlier in the "production" process they won't have much quality of life. Although he will actually have life, that is a good thing.

I had turkey for Thanksgiving, too, but I'm still glad for the turkey whose life was spared. I wish there was a more humane way to eat besides having to kill. It all seems so insane! And some of the killing methods used are barbaric because it's done on a mass scale and during the slaughtering process, often times, turkeys and other "food animals" are still alive and conscious while being scalded to defeather them. Even though many of us eat turkey, it is no reason to be disrespectful of turkeys. I am for a complete overhaul in the slaughtering process. It's just too gruesome!

It's called "Predator control" the wolves were killing off the Moose and Caribu herds, which the Alaskan population use as a food source rather than importing beef. Moose and Caribu are heathier than beef, I have relatives who live in Alaska, and the Predator control program is needed to maintain the Alaskans way of life. It's no different than fishing or deer hunting, you need to thin them out or they overpopulate. Alaska used Game and Wildlife experts and Scientists to put the Predator Control Program together.

President Bush and Governer Palin have both done great damage to our wildlife and our animals. I hope that President Bush goes back to Texas, never to be heard from again. Sarah Palin is back in Alaska and allowing aerial hunting, suing the Federal govt. to get Polar Bears off the endangered species list, killing moose and whatever else she can kill. Bush pardons a person that killed bald eagles, I am not surprised. Go away.

I don't want to make this a political thing but I lived in Alaska for seventeen years and I know Sarah Palin. Her stance on animals leaves a lot to be desired. Watch videos of aerial hunting and then say that a compassionate person could reward people with a $150. bounty for a severed forearm of a wolf that was hunted down with an airplane, ran to exhaustion and then shot. I value your opinion but Sarah Palin has no heart when it comes to animals, my opinion.
