Bush Pardons Turkey, Killer of Bald Eagles

Browse News

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- With less than two months left in office, President George W. Bush is beginning to extend an increasing number of pardons to humans and fowl alike.

President Bush has announced his decision to pardon 14 people, bringing his total number of pardons to 171.

Included in the list of drug dealers and money embezzlers is Leslie Owen Collier, who pleaded guilty in 1995 to unlawfully killing three bald eagles in Charleston, Mo.

Collier was convicted for violating the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act after he placed pesticides in hamburger meat. While hoping to kill coyotes in his area, he wound up taking the lives of various other animals, including the bald eagles.

Though he can't bring the endangered eagles back to life, President Bush will spare one other equally coveted bird, which Benjamin Franklin once proposed for the United States' national symbol: the turkey.

Today Bush will publicly forgo one Thanksgiving turkey, carrying out a White House tradition that has held strong since President Harry S. Truman first pardoned a bird in 1947.

This year's lucky turkey has already traveled to the capital from his native Ellsworth, Iowa. At 20-weeks and 45-pounds, the bird was raised using "normal feeding and other production techniques," according to a White House release.

"The one exception is they were provided increased interaction with people so they would be prepared for their role at the White House Ceremony," the release reads.

Following the ceremony, the turkey will be flown first class to the Disneyland resort in Southern California, where he will be grand marshal of Disney's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

People can vote on the turkey's name on the White House's website, WhiteHouse.gov. Some proposed options include Popcorn, Roost, Apple, Dawn and Pumpkin.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin also pardoned a turkey in her native Wasilla last week, while displaying a grizzly scene many succulent turkeys are likely to encounter tomorrow.

"I, Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska, anticipating and hoping that in the spirit of Thanksgiving, Alaskans everywhere will find adequate nourishment elsewhere and without this particular turkey I do hereby grant Thanksgiving a full amnesty and pardon," said Palin, before selecting the spared bird from a flock.

As she spoke, however, video cameras also picked up a farm worker behind her, methodically feeding birds into a grinder.

Now jokingly dubbed "Turkeygate" by some media outlets, the video of Palin taking questions from a local station, while apparently oblivious to the "carnage" ensuing behind her, has garnered more than two million views on YouTube.

Palin's spokesperson responded to the incident -- and the attention it has received -- on Tuesday.

"The [Alaska] governor didn't know it was going on behind her," the unnamed spokesperson told Entertainment Tonight.

"We're not happy about it and the station is not happy either. This was an attempt to lighten up and do something non-controversial."

Why is it that an article that is clearly suppose to be about a tradition that has been around for decades, that has been carried out be every president since Truman turned into a bunch of angry, hateful comments about the president? And EVERY PRESIDENT pardons people at the end of their term... Why can't people take the article for what it is and stop all the trash talk? The people on here that are trashing Bush got your wish, you get Obama in January, so why are you still complaining? You seem extremely immature to me.

Thank you for voicing what a lot of us are thinking as we read all these comments. I supported Obama and still don't understand all the hateful comments that people feel they need to be posting on this article.

Thanks Jessica, I guess I expected all of the negative hate speech to end after the election, and I am somewhat suprised that these people are still so filled with so much anger after getting what they want. I thought that Obama was hoping to bring the "United" States together, but with this level of immaturity it will NEVER happen.

So what was the turkey ever convicted of that he needed a pardon for? :-)

On the other hand, I am now very curious about the other 100+ pardons...as well as previous presidential pardons....I wonder how the victims, prosecutors, juries and judges all feel when they see someone they put away "pardoned" as some sort of public relations tactic?

I've always wondered about the turkey the President pardons. Is it the turkey the presidential family would have eaten on Thanksgiving, but instead they are pardoning it and are going vegetarian for the day? Or are they just pardoning a random turkey while the one they are having for dinner had already been killed and stuffed?

Sarah Palin was the most under qualified uneducated candidate to ever run as a VP candidate. Simply put she is a moron. John McCain had the election until he picked this buffoon to run with him. She set women back to the 70’s where the shorter your skirt was the higher you went in the company. I’m a diehard Republican and this was the first time I just couldn’t vote Republican for Pres given the VP could be pres and she is a loon!

I agree with you! She said she is running for President for the next term. The media is horrible and us dumba**es believe everything they say! I agree with you I do not believe a word they say about her. They have been trying to set her up since McCain picked her VP. And that whole thing about them making a porn with someone playing her proves how ignorant everyone is. She is a mom and takes care of her kids. And I don't know if her daughter had her baby already but is/ or will be a grandma. Why would they start a porn with someone playing her. And I know I am going to getting replys to this message about what kind of mom is she letting her daughter have her baby at that age. I had my first daughter at 17 and my second at 20. I am still with their father and I could say I take care of my kids and they are happy and healthy and have a roof over their heads. Her daughter and the father of her child look happy together and look like they will be great parents. And stop with the puching of them gettign married because they have a kid. They will get married when they are ready!

I feel ambivalance every year when I hear about the presidential turkey pardon. It seems silly since to pardon this one bird while most of the nation chows down on millions of others.

I used to be a vegetarian. Our treatment of "farm" animals is so awful in this country. I do eat meat now but very little. However, I cook two turkeys a year - one for Thanksgiving and one for Christmas. I will look into a free range bird for Christmas.

You have to wonder what the first turkey did that made it necessary to pardon it. Are some cows eligible for pardons also?

As for the whole Palin thing - wow, if you're looking for something non-controversial maybe you should be aware of where you are filming. There is no way that the TV station didn't know what they had. Stop watching the Russians and start paying attention to what's happening 5 feet from you.

Where your parents German? That’s just how Hitler killed millions and least Bush only killed hundreds of thousands by invading a country that had not harmed or could harm us. It’s the outcry of decent Americans that stopped the insanity of the Bush regime. Had the good little Germans NOT followed the advice of your parents perhaps only Poland would have suffered and not the World. Thank God for free speech and the advice of parents who say question authority.

Liz, there is a huge difference between questioning them and respecting them. You can respectfully reject someones opinion without slandering them. I personally don't agree with every decision President Bush made, but that doesn't mean that I have to go around and bash him. After all, he still is the president. If the people of the United States don't even show the man respect, how on earth do we expect people from other countries to respect him or even this country?

First off, to imply that this persons PARENTS had anything to do with Hitler and his autrocities is outrageous, and frankly, you should be ashamed of yourself. Would you be making that statement to someone of Japanese heritage or a Muslim? Second, we got involved in WW2 because we were attacked by Japan, and not Germany. So much for your theory behind your post. There were other things involved in WHY we went to war with Germany, then who attacked whom. Same goes with why we were involved in Iraq, it wasn't solely based on the attack on Sept. 11.

First off, to imply that this persons parents had anything to do with Hitler and his brutality and genocide is both reckless and outrageous. Would you make that same remark to someone of Japanese heritage or someone that is Muslim? Secondly, we didn't get involved in WW2 until we were attacked by the Empire of JAPAN, Not GERMANY. So much for your correlation. We went to war with Germany under different circumstances, not because of who we were attacked by. Same goes with the war in Iraq. There were other things other then who we attacked by on Sept. 11th, that began our involvement in Iraq. Third, this is about pardons, not wars or other politics and peoples heritage and your attacks on people of German heritage. I wonder if your were this outraged about Clinton's pardoning TWO offenders of animals protections acts too (Peggy Ann Bargon (Violation of the Lacey Act, violation of the Bald Eagle Protection Act) and Howard Winfield Riddle (violation of the Lacey Act)? Or are you just taking an opportunity to defame others that don't hold your views, and "take it" to Bush?
