Bunnies – Pups That Never Grow Up

Browse News

PORTLAND, Me. - The Animal Refuge League in Portland is overflowing with bunnies.

Shelter workers say they see a large quantity of rabbits abandoned that were originally purchased at county fairs.

Unknowing fairgoers bring the furry pets home, not realizing the type of care they need – and that they're not too fond of cuddling.

Rabbits require special care. They need lots of attention, toys and out-of-cage time. They also love to chew and can even work through tough fabrics. One shelter worker described them as puppies that never grow up.

But for the right person, a rabbit can be the perfect fit.

We've told you specifically about one Maine shelter that's dealing with too many bunnies – but overflowing rabbits in shelters aren't uncommon. If you're thinking of buying one, check with your local shelter first.

You can find the shelter nearest you by clicking on the pet services tab, right here at zootoo.com.

It is so rotten that people tend to impulse pet owners & regret it. More pet education is needed.

Bunnies are the best! And I wouldn't say they don't like cuddling-most don't, but some are super social!

Bunnies are misunderstood and people dont think about what goes into to caring for them, seeing them as something such as a hamster or gerble.

Rabbits need care like other pets. People often ignore them and they become something in a cage in the corner. Very sad.

Rabbits are a lot of work, and the rescues/shelters are overrun with them. I have actually taken in two rabbits from Freecycle posters who were told by numerous local rescues that they couldn't take them. After the second one, I researched opening my own rescue, but after a year of research, I decided that I just didn't have it in me to do (financially or time wise). I still check the postings on Freecycle, just in case one should be made.

I think it is not a problem of where they are getting the animals from (though it certainly is an issue), but it is the people who don't stop to think about whether they can or even want to care for a rabbit. While I have never had a rabbit that didn't like to cuddle with me, my buns certainly have not been the "norm..." They do need attention, and can be destructive, even with the best supervision! I think that people who win/buy an animal at the fair or anywhere else fall into the same category as those who give chicks and rabbits for Easter gifts without the foresight to realize that chicks grow into chickens that cannot be potty trained, and rabbits grow too. We have never brought any animal/creature home that we had no intention of caring for for a long time. I won a goldfish at Outdoor Rama when I was three, and that goldfish lived for fifteen years! And that poor fish survived many accidental traumas (like my putting my finger painting on top of the aquarium to dry and the paints dripped into the water when I was maybe seven years old). I have bought animals from the fair before, but I have also done so with knowledge and understanding that this is something I would need to care for. I don't think banning sales of animals at fairs is the right way to go about this problem. I would think that the MAJORITY of animal sales at fairs are thought out and well intending people. Many people go to the fair soley for purchasing an animal, whether it be rabbits, chickens, ducks, or even cattle.

It should not be the responsibility of breeders/sellers to make people aware that these animals need to be cared for, though I do think that if the buyer asks, they should have advice, or even materials available for them.

Exactly.

There should be a law against selling a helpless living creature at a FAIR...
are you kidding me?

i thought you were supposed to be winning stupid stuffed animals and ridiculous inflatable plastic toys at the fair...not little fluff butts. :(

This is another one of those times when people don't do their "homework" first and find out how to properly care for the animal. Adopting an animal can be a huge resposablity, and people need to take it seriously.

Places selling rabbits should tell customers all the work needed to own a rabbit so the customers are sure, and shelters won't become overcrowded.

We probably need to get shelters better funded. I know in my town, it's next to the water treatment plant. You can smell it in the air, and yes, location really is everything. They've been trying to get the money to relocate to a larger facility (naturally, they are overcrowded), but it hasn't happened yet.

There are so many rabbit rescues across the country- other than show rabbits, I can't think of a reason to buy a rabbit. Check out your local House Rabbit Society, or search for a local group, like the Magic Happens Rabbit Rescue in Baton Rouge.

When will people learn that rabbits are not toys. Yes they are cute and soft and cuddly, but they are still live animals.

This is sad. People really need to be sure when they are getting a pet and need to commit to it for life, not just for a while. Our shelters are way too overfilled.

They could at least provide a buyer with a flyer before they make the purchase to explain about the care required. Of course greed won't let them do that!

Maybe the people selling animals should be required to do some teaching and education before being allowed to sell them. That might cut down on the problem somewhat.

It shouldn't be but it is surprising that with all the information on pets now that is out there to be had people still can't make an informed choice as to what kind of animal would be best suited as a new family member.

It's sad to think of how many people adopt a cute baby bunny and then dispose of it like trash when they don't want it anymore. They are so much work. I don't think many people realize how much work they are. They are a lot more work than a hamster or guinea pig!

this is an excellent example of why prospective pet owners need to research the kind of pet that will suit their needs, and the pet's, before they adopt.

I hope more people read this story (or others like it) before getting a rabbit. I don't have any rabbits, and probably won't since I have 4 cats and 1 dog and I plan to always have cats and dogs. I don't think it would be easy to bring in a rabbit into my house.

I love rabbits. Right now I have a guinea pig, I used to have 3, but 2 died of old age. When my last one dies my mom told me I can get a rabbit. I'm not really fond of pets that cuddle, and I learned from research that a rabbit could be a good choice for me.

I used to raise guinea pigs (9 in total) and just recently switched over to rabbits. I'm so glad I decided to branch out. I've decided to buy a new pair of guinea pig too because rabbits and guinea pigs can grow quite fond of one another (they just can't live together).

I hate when people don't research before they get a pet, rabbits are WONDERFUL pets, but not for everyone, you have to be committed. I can't wait for society to start appreciating rabbits for the amazing animals they are. I'm supporting Midwest Rabbit Shelter, they excellent! :)

Animals should never be won at fairs. I agree anyone wanting a rabbit should research care and then look at adopting from the shelter. Our shelter always has a couple of rabbits for adoption. If someone no longer wants their rabbits it would be much better to take them to a shelter that just letting them loose.

Always a good idea to see just what you are getting into before getting a pet. Rabbits require alot of care and aren't for everyone. This puts a huge stress on shelters when animals are abandoned.

There are so many wonderful rabbits in need of loving, forever homes because they've been dumped after they've become inconvenient...people should NEVER get a rabbit or any other pet without doing their research and understanding the lifelong commitment they should be making.

Animals are not toys that can be left in the corner for months just collecting dust. They are actual living breathing beings that need as much love and support as, us, humans do. Thats why rabbit rescues are so amazing. They help coordinate the path unto which the bunny is headed. Most of them check out the person who wants to adopts records to make sure they are elligable to take care of the bunny and not neglect it.

Yes, my first bunny was a baby I bought at a pet store because I didn't know about rabbit rescues. My next two came from a rabbit rescue. The rescue provides lots of help and support to the adoptive parents. There is so much contradictory information on the internet. My first bunny died suddenly and I still wonder if it was my fault.

I don't think animals should be given as "prizes" especially baby animals since they are adorable and wanted by all then they grow up and people tire of them........
