PORTLAND, Me. - The Animal Refuge League in Portland is overflowing with bunnies.
Shelter workers say they see a large quantity of rabbits abandoned that were originally purchased at county fairs.
Unknowing fairgoers bring the furry pets home, not realizing the type of care they need – and that they're not too fond of cuddling.
Rabbits require special care. They need lots of attention, toys and out-of-cage time. They also love to chew and can even work through tough fabrics. One shelter worker described them as puppies that never grow up.
But for the right person, a rabbit can be the perfect fit.
We've told you specifically about one Maine shelter that's dealing with too many bunnies – but overflowing rabbits in shelters aren't uncommon. If you're thinking of buying one, check with your local shelter first.

I think it is not a problem of where they are getting the animals from (though it certainly is an issue), but it is the people who don't stop to think about whether they can or even want to care for a rabbit. While I have never had a rabbit that didn't like to cuddle with me, my buns certainly have not been the "norm..." They do need attention, and can be destructive, even with the best supervision! I think that people who win/buy an animal at the fair or anywhere else fall into the same category as those who give chicks and rabbits for Easter gifts without the foresight to realize that chicks grow into chickens that cannot be potty trained, and rabbits grow too. We have never brought any animal/creature home that we had no intention of caring for for a long time. I won a goldfish at Outdoor Rama when I was three, and that goldfish lived for fifteen years! And that poor fish survived many accidental traumas (like my putting my finger painting on top of the aquarium to dry and the paints dripped into the water when I was maybe seven years old). I have bought animals from the fair before, but I have also done so with knowledge and understanding that this is something I would need to care for. I don't think banning sales of animals at fairs is the right way to go about this problem. I would think that the MAJORITY of animal sales at fairs are thought out and well intending people. Many people go to the fair soley for purchasing an animal, whether it be rabbits, chickens, ducks, or even cattle.
It should not be the responsibility of breeders/sellers to make people aware that these animals need to be cared for, though I do think that if the buyer asks, they should have advice, or even materials available for them.

There should be a law against selling a helpless living creature at a FAIR...
are you kidding me?
i thought you were supposed to be winning stupid stuffed animals and ridiculous inflatable plastic toys at the fair...not little fluff butts. :(
