Breeder strangles dog in front of teen

Browse News

ENGLAND – A breeder from outside Brighton, England, was sentenced to four years in prison today in the March hanging death of a Staffordshire Terrier.

The dog had been a gift to a local teen whose mother wouldn't allow the boy to keep the dog at home. So it stayed at the home of Anthony Woodhouse, a 49-year-old breeder of Staffordshire, or Pit bull, terriers.

According to Woodhouse, he called the boy over to his home when the 6-month-old dog became aggressive, pinning him against a wall and barking.

The boy arrived soon after to find Woodhouse holding one end of a retractable leash. The other end was tied to the dog, stretched over a door. Woodhouse then pulled the leash, thus hanging the dog by its neck. After a few minutes, the dog died.

The boy, whose name cannot be released for legal reasons, said he could hear the dog's nails clawing at the door as it tried to escape.

He said his dog wasn't overly aggressive, as Woodhouse had claimed.

After the incident, the boy buried the dog in a friend's garden. It was later exhumed by RSPCA officials who, after a necropsy (autopsy of an animal) determined the dog died from asphyxiation.

Woodhouse's crimes include animal cruelty and committing a crime in plain view of a minor – for which he will serve four months in prison.

He is banned from owning another animal, and a few small pets found in his home were rescued and given new homes.

In his defense, Woodhouse claims he didn't think strangling the dog would be pailful.

That poor dog he didn't deserve that. How awful for the boy. Seems like they have stiffer laws to then we do in the states. Maybe we should have such laws and then maybe we'd have less stuff like that here.

This guy was a very uncaring individual, it scares me to think how long he has been in volved in the breeding worl pud and has he done this before, at 6 months the pup needed to be trained, and to do this in front of a child, I am glad he is being punished

It sounds like their sentences are harsher than our sentences, here, in the U.S. I'm glad to see he will be serving four years and will not allowed to be owning any more pets when he gets out.

Why would Mr. Woodhouse possibly think that strangulation wouldn't be painful? That poor boy and that poor dog! I'm glad that Mr. Woodhouse got charged.

That man has no defense, but I'm glad he served some time. In the U.S. he wouldn't of got that punishment, more like a slap in the wrist.

Interestingly enough, this one instance of hanging gets a person 4 years behind bars, while in the United States, four kids torture a cat and officials don't even know if they will be charged. This is obviously a clear case of the United States needing more strict animal cruelty laws.

I agree.. we let too much go and severely punish people where a light sentence and fine would be appropriate.. any violent or cruel act should be punished accordingly whether it is a person or animal.

This is a horrible story... Having just adopted an adorable baby pit bull mix, it just saddens me the bad rep pit bulls get, and the poor treatment as a result.

That poor child! First a mother that won't allow him to keep his dog at home where it belongs, then the breeder kills it in front of him. At least the breeder will have to pay a little. Often they get nothing for the crimes they commit. Since he can't have animals, he is out of a job. Maybe he can learn to do something else in prison!

A terrible story. A sick son of a bitch. Four years (first paragraph) or four months? Four years would not be enough. The puppy is dead and just imagine what the young boy must be feeling.

Strangling not painful???? Is he for real?

Killing the dog period was inhumane, sick, and of an animal that belonged to someone else. How old was this kid who owned the dog? How could he not help the dog? A teen is old enough to decide to try to either remove the leash from the man, or hold the dog up to keep it from strangling.

Completely disgusting.

Painful or not, was there a reason to KILL the poor thing? It was probably barking b/c it heard its owner coming or something! This guy has no business with animals and people should think twice about dealing with him as well
