‘Black is Beautiful’ Pet Adoption Promo Shut Down

Browse News

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- An animal shelter inundated with black cats and dogs was planning to run a promotion to help get them adopted instead of putting them down.

The “Black is Beautiful” campaign, which was scheduled to run June 14 through June 20, got heavy criticism for coinciding with a Texas holiday that celebrates the final freeing of enslaved blacks, and was subsequently pulled.

“Last week, a vet tech told me that we needed to start considering euthanasia,” Animal Services Director Cheryl Schneider told Pet Pulse. “We had too many black cats and dogs, some of which had been here for a long period of time.”

Like most shelters, the Williamson County Regional Shelter finds it more difficult to locate homes for black dogs and cats. Schneider had heard of other area shelters reducing the adoption rates on these animals, so she decided to run a promotion not knowing about the holiday.

“I said ‘give me a week and let me see if I discount their fee and can get them adopted out,’ ” Schneider said.

As previously reported by Pet Pulse, the “Black Dog Syndrome” is a common affliction for shelters. In addition to superstitions about black cats being bad luck, these animals are given a bad rap by the media and negative advertising that portrays them as evil and aggressive.

According to Kimberley Intino, director of Animal Sheltering Issues for the Humane Society of the U.S., yet another contributing factor is that black animals blend into the background at shelters.

“You can’t really see their faces as well,” Intino said. “If you’re walking down a hallway and you have several black dogs next to each other, you might not notice any one individual dog.”

Adoption sales and discounts for black cats and dogs are not uncommon. Shelters across the country are running similar innovative promotions to try and minimize the amount of time these animals spend waiting for a new home.

Williamson County Regional received criticism for their program due to when it was scheduled.

“It was bad timing that it coincided with Juneteenth,” Schneider said. “It’s not our intention to ever offend any person, so we pulled the promotion advertising.”

Juneteenth -- also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day -- originated in Texas and is now a state holiday observed on June 19 in 26 states. It honors the day that Texas slaves were freed from slavery -- 2 ½ years after the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863.

After sending out a press release to promote the Black is Beautiful campaign, Schneider was informed by a local newspaper that the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People had filed a complaint saying the adoption promotion was inconsiderate.

Although the shelter is no longer running the Black is Beautiful campaign, they have left the discounted adoption rates in place indefinitely. Despite the lack of marketing, the news story itself generated a lot of attention.

“There have been tons of phone calls and e-mails and we’ve had a steady stream of people in here all day,” Schneider said. “Since noon today, we’ve adopted out more than six cats and two dogs that had been here for a long period of time.”

Schneider is hopeful that the rest of the black cats and dogs will find homes over the weekend.

“The color is just one part of the animal,” Intino said. “When people focus on the color of the animal, we may be inflating a problem that’s not really a problem.

“It’s just another characteristic that should be considered as one part of that individual animal.”

I think most shelters see evidence that large black dogs are among the last to be adopted ... because they don't show as well as brighter colored dogs. It's sad, because these dogs have every bit as much to offer as any other pet in the shelter ... but it's true that they often get passed by. I'm glad this shelter was able to offer a discount and place some of these animals in new homes.

how cheesy... this is america,,, and yet more people have nothing better to do than worry about such minor things. At least it got a little news coverage to hopefully find new homes for a few

I bet there was nobody that was actually personally offended by the slogan, they just wanted to win the politically correct contest that so many groups and individuals ridiculously participate in nowadays, it has gone too far!

Hmm ... I just read the article about the panda that was killed by the earthquake in China being laid to rest and got to thinking. I find myself wondering that pandas are so charismatic (and they're mostly black), yet black (and mostly black) cats and dogs are the least adopted. Maybe these special inky, pigment-concentrated pets should be given names that include the word "panda?" Just a thought! PandaPoo, PandaPom, PandaKitty, PandaPup ... anyone else feel like this might help the black and mostly black pets find forever homes?

Hmmm...It was unfortunate that the promotion coincided with Juneteenth but I thnk the forced cancellation of the promotion was a little extreme. It is pretty obvious that the shelter didn't mean any harm or discrimination with the promotion. They were just trying to find good homes for deserving animals. At least they got attention anyway!

Althought the promotion was cancelled at least it brought attentionto the fact that the black animals are simply missed or bypassed. It is a real problem, but I love all animals whatever color!

Well at least it brought attention to the shelter! It's unfortunate that it came out the way it did for some, as it is clear it wasnt a campaigne to promot hatred, or discrimination. If only people would just get along, and move on. I know that adopting black cats and dogs is hard. People would come in and say...oh no that black cat is not good, and me knowing that this cat was the Most sweetest, loving cat we had would just sigh with disbelief that this person could not overcome what they had been told. But if it happens with people....it's going to happen with animals too. Sad but true.

They are obviously two separate things. The shelter was merely being literal and alliterative with their slogan rather than figurative. I think everyone should just calm the hell down and get some of these animals adopted or just adopt them...period. THAT's the point.

On the subject of black dogs, I have a black and brindle dog and he was definitely subject to the BBD Syndrome because he languished in the shelter for almost a year. We got him for many reasons but one of them was BECAUSE he was black. It just suits him so well and we fell in love with his gorgeous looks, personality and temperament. There's nothing like a black dog whose coat is so shiny, you can see yourself in it. AND, Calvin's yellow-ish eyes shine SO much brighter against his dark fur. He's just stunning.

That's just nuts. Why couldn't the message be taken solely as it was intended? I fall in love with every black cat that comes through our shelter. They are always sweet and intelligent and overlooked! I think it was a great effort and it's a shame some nit-picker found it so inappropriate that it ended. I think it was smart and forward thinking. Who's with me?

Ok, maybe it's a Texas thing, but I'd never heard of a significance for these dates aside from flag day and father's day. Does anyone else's calendar mark this event? Obviously this was an oversight by the shelter and no ill will was intended, but that wasn't taken into account, instead, let's call NAACP? At least the animals did make the news somehow.

Doesn't the NAACP have anything better to do? I mean, seriously. There is enough actual negative in the world to combat without jumping at every perceived wrong. Anyone aware of how unfair the world can be should think twice before actively preventing animals from being adopted! They should be helping the campaign, not squashing it!

NAACP should be ashamed of themselves. In this world everything is taken so serious. The shelter is only tring to get these cats and dogs adopted. Maybe the NAACP COULD HAVE JUMPED IN AND HELPED OUT INSTEAD OF BEING SO CALOUSED

I have found that some of the most important things to understand are often the ones I don't understand at first. The "black is beautiful" saying has been around for decades and has a very specific (and deeply felt meaning) for a large number of people. Respecting a person's feelings isn't about being PC. It is just the kind/right thing to do.
The person who suggested the use of the phrase may not have meant to upset people. But he did (Black civil rights slogan + caged animal = a poor/insensitive image. ) The campaign needed to be changed and an apology issued.
I know that it can be hard to know all of the things that can have double meanings and end up hurting people. The best you can do is make sure that you check your calendars when having an event for conflicts (If he had and called the June tenth folks they may have invited the shelter to set up at the event. A lot of nice people, who could have offered good homes are in those crowds). When you have checked, check again and get feed back, feed back, and more feed back.

You know, I'm all for celebrations of ethnic background and advancements/milestones, et cetera, but come ON people! Too sensitive over the fact that an ANIMAL SHELTER is trying to save lives of those most often overlooked - the black dogs and cats - by offering a celebration of their own. Regardless of the timing, they were not out to offend anyone - they were trying to save animals. How narcissistic can this organization be????

This isn't about the NAACP or anyone else - it's about the animals, about saving them.

Kudos to the Shelter for their work!!!!

i completely agree. i understand that maybe some people would have been upset, but why should they be? can't they share the saying with the poor cats and dogs stuck in shelters because people overlook them due to their coloring. if anything, the people upset by the use of that saying should be the ones to understand the need these animals have for compassion.

Maybe the people that disliked the campaign didn't really believe BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL. I think black is truely beautiful. My prettiest horse was a coal black Appaloosa with a white splash blanket. And ofcourse my most precious Neamatoad and the Delux, mamas baby boy, was black. Both are gone, never will be forgotten.

Black is the BEST color for dogs because it doesn't show dirt... !
I remember taking my Giant schnauzers to the dog park, everyone was playing in the muddy pond at the end of the field. The other dogs looked horribly muddy, mine just looked shiny (even though they, too, were caked in mud!)

I know this may be unbelievable to some, but unfortunately a lot of people are still very superstitious and believe that black cats are bad luck. Sad, I know, but true. Thank God, I am not a superstitious person as my children and I would have missed out on having one of the most personable, gentlest cats in the world. He was not black, but found as a kitten on Friday the 13th. Between my family bottle-feeding him and a very mothering dog (male) who did the rest, we had one of the best cats in the world. My daughter ended up naming him "King Friday the 13th", a Mr. Rogers character. We called him Friday for short, and now all of us consider the 13th a very lucky day.

Our rescue(Planned Pethood in Toledo, Ohio) has found it to be very true that black dogs do not get adopted as easily as others. We comment amongst ourselves about "big black dogs" and have also done promos such as "Big Black Dog Month" in which we discount our adoption fees for black dogs over 45lbs.
I don't pretend to know why this phenomena exist, but it is very real and there are actually statistics out there that will verify it is not just anecdotal.

Black is beautiful! If you read the article about the class action lawsuit against Menu Foods you were introduced to Ebony. She was the most precious, sweetest, loving cat I ever had. She died due to the poisoned foods. She had beautiful green/gold eyes, the shiniest fur you ever saw and yes, she was black and beautiful. Sadly many shelters take their black cats at of adoption during the halloween season because people use them for satonic rituals among other things. Are we humans ever going to learn that color doesn't matter!

Black is Beautiful Pet Adoption Promo is a great idea, regardless of what anyone thinks. It is a way for people to look at these animals in a different light. I think every state should have a Black is Beautiful Pet Adoption Promo, After all this is America isn't it? And we do have freedom of speech, regardless if it offends anyone. It is our right, it is what we fight for. Hope all goes well with the adoption regardless of what it is called.

I wish very much that every black cat and every black dog and every cat,dog with every color will be adopt and will find good home.
And can not to euthanize so nice, sweet cats or dogs only becouse they are black color.
Better to sterilisate them and to give them freedom.
But some people need to understand that color of the cat or dog does not matter.
So people need in education, they need to have more lifes experience that to understand better what can to bring bad luck to the people in the life.
Becouse all this nice, clever, sweet, understanding and thankful black cats and dogs can to bring only good luck, happiness and joy to the people.
And life show,it is true, they bring good luck, happiness and joy to the people. How my black cat for me and to my family many years.
I thanks to my fate that I and my family were very glad and were enjoy many years with our black cat.

Wow! How unfortunate for these animals that there are people who are so narrow minded, and self centered. Instead of being happy for the animals opportunity to get adopted thanks to a great idea the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People turned it into something negative. How childish can you be? Instead of looking at it in a positive way they act like children. Why not be excited about "freeing" these animals for the world of cages they live in. Juneteenth is about FREEDOM, why would you not want to share your excitement, and honor that day by continuing to offer animals the opportunity to be freed?

Racism is in the mind of the beholder- and "Black is Beautiful" is actually a positive message- not just for dogs but for people. Our world is becoming obsessed with being politically correct that it has become silencing. Obvious racial slurs are just that, obvious. These dogs and cats need homes, they need to be loved and get overlooked due to their color and many are seen by the public as not "beautiful". Their alternative is death- I hope the shelter gets many adoptions and I hope people start fighting the true racism that occurs in our country , not at a struggling shelter.

I really don't think that it should have matter that there was a national holiday because it wasn't like they were trying to compete with it. They were just trying to let their community know that not everything has to be discriminative and if they people would have looked into it better they would have realized this would probably be a good campaign at the same time as the holiday because its all about equality is it not. It sad that it was looked upon as it was though it did indeed have a great outcome.
I have a black dog and its not any different the array of other colors of animals I have, its her personality that makes her special.

In today's world it seems like someone is always offened by something. Too often people don't look at the whole picture. I don't understand why the "Black is Beautiful" campaign was pulled. It had nothing to do with the holiday. It was about helping animals find homes for crying out loud. In any case, I am glad that at least the controversy has led to more people coming into the shelter to look at black dogs and cats. Hopefully they will be able to hold the campaign later this year. And like it said the color of the animal is just one characteristic of the animal. Each animal has its own personality. That is why you should adopt an animal, not the color of its coat!

My daughter accused me of only liking black dogs as all the dogs that I owned were black until I recently adopted Delilah who is brown and white. Riley, her dog is brown and white, but all of our other dogs are black with maybe a little white or brown on them. Samson is black with four white feet, a white chest and his 80 pounds, Lily is black with some white around her muzzle that makes her look old but she is still only 2 this year, Lacy is black , laced with brown around her feet, eyes , hense her name. I don't know why, but I am a bit partial to black dogs. I love all of my dogs, but the black shiny coats are especially beautiful to me! I have owned several black cats in my lifetime too, Charky, Tarbaby, Misty to name three that I have owned in my past. Charky and Tarbaby were solid black, Misty was a tuxedo cat with a white face. I only wish the black dogs and cats good good luck in getting adopted. If I didn't already own five dogs, 3 of which are black, I would be glad to adopt another one, but my budget wont allow it.
