‘Black is Beautiful’ Pet Adoption Promo Shut Down

Browse News

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- An animal shelter inundated with black cats and dogs was planning to run a promotion to help get them adopted instead of putting them down.

The “Black is Beautiful” campaign, which was scheduled to run June 14 through June 20, got heavy criticism for coinciding with a Texas holiday that celebrates the final freeing of enslaved blacks, and was subsequently pulled.

“Last week, a vet tech told me that we needed to start considering euthanasia,” Animal Services Director Cheryl Schneider told Pet Pulse. “We had too many black cats and dogs, some of which had been here for a long period of time.”

Like most shelters, the Williamson County Regional Shelter finds it more difficult to locate homes for black dogs and cats. Schneider had heard of other area shelters reducing the adoption rates on these animals, so she decided to run a promotion not knowing about the holiday.

“I said ‘give me a week and let me see if I discount their fee and can get them adopted out,’ ” Schneider said.

As previously reported by Pet Pulse, the “Black Dog Syndrome” is a common affliction for shelters. In addition to superstitions about black cats being bad luck, these animals are given a bad rap by the media and negative advertising that portrays them as evil and aggressive.

According to Kimberley Intino, director of Animal Sheltering Issues for the Humane Society of the U.S., yet another contributing factor is that black animals blend into the background at shelters.

“You can’t really see their faces as well,” Intino said. “If you’re walking down a hallway and you have several black dogs next to each other, you might not notice any one individual dog.”

Adoption sales and discounts for black cats and dogs are not uncommon. Shelters across the country are running similar innovative promotions to try and minimize the amount of time these animals spend waiting for a new home.

Williamson County Regional received criticism for their program due to when it was scheduled.

“It was bad timing that it coincided with Juneteenth,” Schneider said. “It’s not our intention to ever offend any person, so we pulled the promotion advertising.”

Juneteenth -- also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day -- originated in Texas and is now a state holiday observed on June 19 in 26 states. It honors the day that Texas slaves were freed from slavery -- 2 ½ years after the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863.

After sending out a press release to promote the Black is Beautiful campaign, Schneider was informed by a local newspaper that the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People had filed a complaint saying the adoption promotion was inconsiderate.

Although the shelter is no longer running the Black is Beautiful campaign, they have left the discounted adoption rates in place indefinitely. Despite the lack of marketing, the news story itself generated a lot of attention.

“There have been tons of phone calls and e-mails and we’ve had a steady stream of people in here all day,” Schneider said. “Since noon today, we’ve adopted out more than six cats and two dogs that had been here for a long period of time.”

Schneider is hopeful that the rest of the black cats and dogs will find homes over the weekend.

“The color is just one part of the animal,” Intino said. “When people focus on the color of the animal, we may be inflating a problem that’s not really a problem.

“It’s just another characteristic that should be considered as one part of that individual animal.”

The shelter's intentions of their ad campaign was a positive one, why take offense if they weren't trying to be offensive? All pets need a loving home!

This is so sad! These poor animals, just as humans, have no say about their color. Beauty comes from inside. I wish we could all realize that.

I have never heard of the Black Dog Syndrome. I actually prefer black dogs and cats. I don't think the promotion should have been pulled. It's unfortunate about the timing. Since the pulling of the promotion caught attention, then I guess they accomplished what was needed.

The syndrome applies to cats as well. Comments have been made that due to their color their features are not as distinguishable as other colors and they tend to "blend in" to the shelter setting. And don't forget about superstition.

This is true! Too many "weirdo's" to take a chance on it. I know if I adopted out a black animal around Halloween and then found out it was to some "cult" and had been used in a "sacrifice" I would be sick and heartbroken over it! Shame that things need to be done that way!

I can see why some would consider it in poor taste to run the Black is Beautiful campaign coinciding with Juneteenth, and the timing is unfortunate. But the sentiment is so wonderful and positive, and I'm glad the shelter is still offering the discounts. One of my two dogs is black, and she had been in the shelter for months. The woman working there thanked us for taking her because they have trouble adopting out black dogs. The dog is sweet, gentle, smart, well adjusted, and not at all aggressive. Our flashier, spotted dog is the one who's scared of strangers. Anyway, I hope that the attention that the CANCELING of this promotion gets will be as good for business as the promotion itself would have been.

I think it's rediculous to compare one with the other. Why not consider it a privilage that we are getting the black animals adopted out @ the same time as the "holiday". Anytime we can help poor defenseless animals is a good time!!!!!!!! Personally I dont see were the problem is. States have two different things going on at the same time all the time. I think it's a little selfish of whoever is complaining.

Get real... Black is beautiful (as is any other hue), especially in a pet. Leave it to some group to not see the larger issue of needless euthanasia than their own political agenda.

I hope they find homes for as many of the black cats and dogs as possible. I do understand why they decided not to do the promotion at the same time as the Juneteenth holiday. It would have been in poor taste.

All of us here at zootoo are animal lovers and probably don't see how comparing our furry friends to a group of people can be insulting. But it is... to them. If we expect people to be more compassionate to animals then we also need to be more compassionate and understanding of our fellow humans. The fact is that racism still exists even in it's smaller forms. Comparing a group of humans (any group) to animals that are seen or stereotyped as undesirable, caged, unwanted, without freewill is insulting. It suggests that they are beneath or less than another group. Many who are not African-American do not realize the importance of this holiday. I understand that so many here have or have had black animals but that is just it - animals. It is comparing people to animals. It suggests that they are non-human which is where racism began in the first place. Non-human was equated to non-white. Please try to understand how this must feel. This is a very touchy subject in this country but I feel it is at the core of many of our problems. However, it we can't get past problems within our own species, how can we do any good for the rest of the living creatures in the world. To move on we must try to understand and realize other's realities and point-of-views. Please please try to understand. This stopped being about just trying to get animals adopted once a slogan used for empowerment for African-Americans was adopted. By the way, I'll go ahead and apologize if anyone finds this insulting.

Thanks for being one of the only comments here to have some common sense and compasion towards PEOPLE. I love animals. I have 7 furry pets in my home. They are a part of my family, but I am still able to realize that people are still more important. I am a little tired of the people here who complain that we should all do ANYTHING for animals, even if it means harming or offending other people. Animals can be helped without offending people.

I just heard about "Black Dog Syndrome" for the first time recently so it's weird that this story came out now. It's unfortunate that they had to stop the marketing aspect but obviously people all over the country are reading about this and talking about it, so maybe now even MORE people will adopt black dogs and cats than before, and not just from that shelter. They say, there's no such thing as bad publicity, right?

I'm surprised that black dogs and cats are harder to find homes for. I have two black cats, had a black dog as a kid and two other black cats. I always thought black cats and dogs were beautiful, and I know many other pet owners that have black dogs and cats who feel the same way. At any rate the promotions timing was unfortunate, and I hope the shelter finds homes for all of the pets.

I think that people take policital "correctness" too far and to such asinine extremes that no one can say ANYTHING without SOMEONE being offended. Would there have been the same public outcry if it was large breed dogs and their campaign was, "Big is beautiful?" Or if the animals were primarily white in color because people didn't want to adopt animals that would look dirty all the time if they were playing outside, or something? "White is beautiful..." How this solgan was deemed inapproriate to coincide with a holiday celebrating the fact that slaves were freed is beyond me. I don't care if people call me white. I'm pale as a ghost! I have a friend who doesn't care if you refer to her as black. But I have another friend who takes offense to being described as black because her skin is brown, not super dark like some people. Who cares what color you are? Why should anyone discriminate animals by color? No one should discriminate people by color, they shouldn't do it to animals either. And just for coincidence sake, I have experienced that white cats are meaner than black ones. But it's nothing really to do with the pigment in their fur. It's just a coincidence! I love my black cats. But I do take extra care to keep them shut away on Halloween...

"Black is Beautiful." Isn't that a slogan that the black community started years ago? Why should anyone consider it offensive just because it's applied to animals.

I've never understood why people were less attracted to black dogs and cats. If their fur is shiny it gleams and is very beautiful. I do agree with some of the comments written by others that some of their facial features tend to "disappear" if the lighting isn't good. I've had that problem when I was trying to take pictures of a black Cocker Spaniel we had fostered. Luckily he wound up with a wonderful couple.

I agree, ridiculous. This is not offensive in anyway and I bet 95% of American have never heard of this 'holiday', I think the slogan is catchy and cute. Someone just wanted to cause a stir and prove that they were politically correct, taking the lives of dogs and cats in the end.

I see no reason for anyone to be offended by "black is beautiful" at all. Heavens, maybe both should be celebrated together and we could raise awareness for shelter pets AND celebrate the freedom of slaves!

I really have to wonder if they even knew what the "black is beautiful" campaign was about? It sounds like the complaint was made without even trying to contact the shelter to ask about it.

I'm glad the shelter is having a good turn-out anyway!

I never really knew that people were not as willing to adopt a black dog until I adopted mine. The thought never crossed my mind, frankly. A local shelter where I live has promos for black animals too - I think it must work. I can't comment about the controversy here except to say that I wish people would realize that we are talking about something different and just go with it!

That is crazy! I owned the cutest little black dog for 16 years and when I adopted him I wouldn't have cared if he was black or purple with polka dots. I mean honestly, what difference does it make- the dog doesn't know or care what color they are, so why should we?

I agree that it was going overboard for anyone to file a complaint against the shelter for using a positive message like "Black is Beautiful" for such a positive purpose...saving animals! I think the groups that filed the complaints should have instead embraced the shelter promotion and incorporated it into their Juneteenth celebrations inviting the shelter to have animals up for adoption at their celebrations. It could have turned into a beautiful community partnership if people weren't so quick to judge the shelter's efforts as offensive.

Oh brother! It really was just bad timing for the promotion. That's all it was. I pray that all the black animals that need to be adopted find wonderful forever homes. I hope this shelter considers using this campaign another time of year in the future when they have alot of black animals in need of homes. It makes the community aware of the problems of "black dog" syndrom & in this case black cats as well. The black community should appreciate that the shelter is trying to fight against the prejudice of the animals in question!

For anyone that has ever been under discrimination before should realize that a campaign to help stop it is a wonderful thing! I would think that this would be supported by everyone to try to help animals lives' get saved. People are judged and animals are judged just the same! More people should be trying to stop this judgement. I hope that they are able to get all of their black dogs and cats homes! I want a black cat, and I will definitely be adopting one in the future. I already have an orange tabby, which they are overlooked as well, and he is the best kitty ever!

The shelter was wrong to pull this campaign. People and organizations will always find something wrong with whatever is done - no matter how innocent it is and no matter how it will help. It is time that we do what we feel is right - not what someone else tells us is wrong! The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People should be ashamed of themselves and focus on more relevant issues!

I can't say I understand why the campaign was offensive, but at least the news coverage got the shelter some attention--and some adoptions. My daughter has a black cat and a tuxedo cat that she took home from the rescue she volunteers for because they were such great personalities and she was told they might not ever get adopted because of their color. I had never heard of this bias until then--and have had a series of tuxedo cats over the years who were wonderful friends.

Ah, yes, as the world turns today......I think if you saw this campaign as racist YOU are racist. This is absolutely ridiculous. There are far more important things out there, people, than the fact that this ad campaign might offend someone. What a load of manure. Forget about the fact this shelter is over run with black dogs and cats. The most important thing is the wording.
I have a black dog and I just took her. Never thought about her color. My other dog was black also. It just turned out that way.
I have a black rescue cat that has more personality than most people I know. I had heard about black animals being euthanized so I just kept her. She is a joy to be around and makes me laugh each and every day.
I think people who have nothing better to do than this mindless crap should be made to help out some animals. At least do one thing good with their life while on this earth. Give me a break..................

How sad, our rescue sees this everyday, our shelters are full of black dogs. Mostly Black Labs or Lab Mixes, and we can't take them all. We usually have 2-3 months a year that we do half price adoptions for Black Labs, cause we have a hard time adopting out the best behaved black dogs too.

That is why I can't stand breeders of black labs. Seriously, there are too many black labs in this world, hold off for a while! They are great dogs and the lab personality and skill is there in the dogs that aren't AKC registered or whatever.

I think it is sad that anyone thought that this campaign was aimed for anyone other than those poor dogs who happen to have black fur. Perhaps a differently worded theme would have been a better choice. Personally I love the rich black pigment on dogs, especially German Shepherds. It is surprising because in Germany, the darker and richer the pigment, the more highly favored the dog. In the US, it seems people prefer the lighter coats with only a black saddle, or more like Rin Tin Tin. To me, the darker coat just ripples and shines when the dog moving effortlessly. You can't see it as much on a lighter or sable coat.

It is incredibly sad that black animals are more difficult to adopt' I never realized this. My puppy is black. He is a black lab/ australian cattle dog mix. I think that he is adorable. He is a very loving, affectionate and fun dog. I can't imagine having any other puppy. I also used to have a solid black cat. She was one of the sweetest cats I've ever seen. Next time I decide to adopt another pet, I think I will purposely only consider the black pets at the local shelter.
