‘Black is Beautiful’ Pet Adoption Promo Shut Down

Browse News

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- An animal shelter inundated with black cats and dogs was planning to run a promotion to help get them adopted instead of putting them down.

The “Black is Beautiful” campaign, which was scheduled to run June 14 through June 20, got heavy criticism for coinciding with a Texas holiday that celebrates the final freeing of enslaved blacks, and was subsequently pulled.

“Last week, a vet tech told me that we needed to start considering euthanasia,” Animal Services Director Cheryl Schneider told Pet Pulse. “We had too many black cats and dogs, some of which had been here for a long period of time.”

Like most shelters, the Williamson County Regional Shelter finds it more difficult to locate homes for black dogs and cats. Schneider had heard of other area shelters reducing the adoption rates on these animals, so she decided to run a promotion not knowing about the holiday.

“I said ‘give me a week and let me see if I discount their fee and can get them adopted out,’ ” Schneider said.

As previously reported by Pet Pulse, the “Black Dog Syndrome” is a common affliction for shelters. In addition to superstitions about black cats being bad luck, these animals are given a bad rap by the media and negative advertising that portrays them as evil and aggressive.

According to Kimberley Intino, director of Animal Sheltering Issues for the Humane Society of the U.S., yet another contributing factor is that black animals blend into the background at shelters.

“You can’t really see their faces as well,” Intino said. “If you’re walking down a hallway and you have several black dogs next to each other, you might not notice any one individual dog.”

Adoption sales and discounts for black cats and dogs are not uncommon. Shelters across the country are running similar innovative promotions to try and minimize the amount of time these animals spend waiting for a new home.

Williamson County Regional received criticism for their program due to when it was scheduled.

“It was bad timing that it coincided with Juneteenth,” Schneider said. “It’s not our intention to ever offend any person, so we pulled the promotion advertising.”

Juneteenth -- also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day -- originated in Texas and is now a state holiday observed on June 19 in 26 states. It honors the day that Texas slaves were freed from slavery -- 2 ½ years after the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863.

After sending out a press release to promote the Black is Beautiful campaign, Schneider was informed by a local newspaper that the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People had filed a complaint saying the adoption promotion was inconsiderate.

Although the shelter is no longer running the Black is Beautiful campaign, they have left the discounted adoption rates in place indefinitely. Despite the lack of marketing, the news story itself generated a lot of attention.

“There have been tons of phone calls and e-mails and we’ve had a steady stream of people in here all day,” Schneider said. “Since noon today, we’ve adopted out more than six cats and two dogs that had been here for a long period of time.”

Schneider is hopeful that the rest of the black cats and dogs will find homes over the weekend.

“The color is just one part of the animal,” Intino said. “When people focus on the color of the animal, we may be inflating a problem that’s not really a problem.

“It’s just another characteristic that should be considered as one part of that individual animal.”

I agree with Suzanne-I love my black dog! I picked her because she is black and I had been reading about the difficulty shelters have in getting black pets adopted out. She's a great dog!

I'm not sure how it offends either, unless the NAACP felt the shelter was somehow equating dogs with African Americans. It's a shame to shut down the promo, though. Our shelter has done "adopt a black dog/cat" month, and it really does help to call public attention to these overlooked animals.

Black dogs are actually my favorites--but am familiar with the fact that for many they are not. I think it was a creative idea and unfortunate that the timing was wrong and some people chose to put a negative spin on it. It should have been clear to anyone that this had no intent other than to help the animals. We gotta lighten up sometimes before making something positive into a negative!

I agree with you. I didn't know until this past time at getting my dog that more black dogs get put into shelters then any other color - I like my dog- black and all? He looks like a little violinist in tuxedo? Well, from now on I will only adopt black dogs? We;; - unless the shelter has another dog that needs a home more?

I think it's a great idea, and I also think some people are overly sensitive and look for things to be offended by. Sheesh. I have two black dogs, one bc he was in a shelter for 6 months and nobody showed any interest. I'll probably gravitate towards black dogs in the future as well. Shelters need to make the public aware of this so they don't unknowingly look over what could be a great pet, simply bc of its color.

I love my black cat! Also I might be naieve but what in the world does an pet adoption advertisement have to do with Juneteenth? The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is upset by "Black is Beautiful", that doesn't even make sense to me.

If there's a human foolishness that out-stupids all the others, it's superstition. Black cats, broken mirrors, walking under ladders, number 13. I despair, because no matter how hard you try, you can't put wisdom in a fool's brain.

Oh my. I didn't see anything offensive about this. Seems the messages of the two groups have more in common and if the NAACP had gotten behind the dog promotion, maybe some good could have come for both groups.

Really, people shouldn't take offense -- I've always thought black dogs/cats were beautiful, and not til I started volunteering at the shelter, did I hear that they weren't as easily adopted, because you can look at a picture and not see their best features. Even in petwars, my dog with the black face isn't scoring as high as my dog with more white on his face -- just a strange thing.....

Wow! Instead of making this a war between two groups of people dedicated and passionate about their needs/wants they should have worked together to promote each other. No offense should have been taken because they were promoting Black Animals - that is what they were - black animals...

Oh, I forgot, June 19th is my birthday, not only a juneteenth holiday so go ahead shelter, black cats and dogs are beautiful, much more so then then these overly sensitive african americans who have to complain about an animal shelter. Instead of bitching, why don't they pitch in to help these animals.

I love black cats and I support the shelter trying to adopt them out. They are Beautiful and I can't believe the NAACP took offense to the term black is beautiful. Nobody owns the term black and it is what these animals are. Crap like that is what turns people off to the real incidents of racism.

Living in Austin, I had heard about this locally. Of course, they did not mean to offend anyone and were only trying to find homes for these lovely dogs and cats. Black coated animals traditionally have a problem...we will just have to educate one person at a time.

I'm interested with all the comments below. Living near the shelter in this story, I had heard about the issues they were having. Ok, so bad marketing on the part of the shelter. June-teenth as it's often referred to is a pretty big holiday in Texas, and I thought more people knew about it. Either way, they were trying to do something to prevent "Big Black Dog Syndrome." We see it often at the shelter where I volunteer. In fact, if I see a dark colored dog (black, brown, even brindled) in a kennel with dark bedding, I'll go to the back and get some lively bright pinks and greens to replace it with. That makes it easier to see the pups!

One time I came across a little black lab on a navy blue towel in a lower kennel. You couldn't even see him back there! Some bright, cheery yellow fixed that up quick!

As an owner of a generic looking black dog that languished in a shelter for far too long, I understand the importance of marketing black dogs and educating people about the "black dog syndrome". I hope the people that complained are happy that euthanasia was the next options for these poor dogs.

I have about the superstition surrounding black cats. Having owned many black cats, I have never noted any unique unwanted character issues. I think it is just their appearance which causes some to steer clear of them. As for the issue of this shelter's campaign and choice of "Black is Beautiful" slogan. No certain group of people "own" the term "BLACK" and it was obvious that there was no reference in this campaign to any certain group of humans. It was about animals! The political correctness Nazis make me want to puke! I think a good New Years resolution for 2009 would be to absolutely ignore these radically over-sensitive minority groups and continue on with the NORMAL majority's agenda.

A group so happy about their own freedom should have been more than proud to help with the freedom of these animals. Shame they couldn't see it in that light. But, the misguided attention has helped and that is good news

I think that any good marketing person at that shelter could have predicted that some people would be offended and should have come up with another theme to feature black cats and dogs. It's not very smart to irritate part of your customer base when you can easily avoid doing so.

The first time I heard of the Black Dog Syndrome what when we got the Rotts-They told me it is difficult to find homes for them and stated the same reason, you can't see their features as well.
This make no sense to me. I adore black Labs, I would adopt one in a heartbeat. I agree, since this event was already planned and they felt they needed to cancel it, which i think is dumb. Who would it offend ? People should not be offended by having an event featuring a color of dog ! Why couldn't they just postpone and not have to start the killing process.
We have to many stereotypes already. Pitt Bulls, Rottweilers, Black Dog Syndrome,German Shepherd and who knows how many others. Why can't there just be dogs period. Perhaps some are bad so to speak but this could be due to the breeding process of some puppy mills who do not breed correctly and the outcome is an unstable pet. If this unstable pet is placed in the home of someone unfamiliar with the breed there will be problems. I think stricter legislation on breeders would be welcome. Higher penalty on pet offenders, those who breed, raise and abuse animals.
I believe sites such as this are raising the awareness of abuse of animals since so many of us have rescued, belong to a rescue group, volunteer in a shelters or have adopted a pet from either a shelter or rescue.

Gee whiz, the NAACP needs to get a grip. This was an honest, heartfelt attempt to give black animals a better chance of being adopted. I don't understand the "syndrome" where black cats & dogs are hard to adopt out. My last two dogs were/are black. I rescued a black cat. I had never heard of this before reading about it on zootoo. It just blows me away that people would judge an animal because of their color. They have the same good souls as do animals of other colors. It just doesn't make sense to me.
