‘Black is Beautiful’ Pet Adoption Promo Shut Down

Browse News

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Steven Harrison was on his way to Knoxville, Tenn., when his future flashed in front of his eyes.

While on a layover in Atlanta, he began to chat up a man named Robert. After a few minutes, Harrison learned that his new friend was part of the 67th Specialized Search Dog Platoon, Canine Company, 5th Engineer Battalion. He was heading back to Iraq after spending the past few days with family.

Before long, Harrison saw about 200 soldiers, all heading back to various parts of the Middle East. So he thought, “what can I do to help these guys?”

After weeks of thinking, an e-mail showed up from the sergeant who was ready to take Harrison up on his offer. The e-mail listed various care package ideas that could help the soldiers.

But when Harrison found out about all the dogs overseas, his mission was clear and with that, Operation: Furry Soldiers was born.

With the help of 200 friends, Harrison began making care packages for war dogs. What began as a few tennis balls turned into boxes of ropes, stuffed animals, and more tennis balls than even Roger Federer could handle.

"It's different. People have been sending care packages over for as long as I can remember," said Harrison. "We used to do it for college friends. I never really knew there were dogs over there doing what they do. It's not something they talk about a lot.”

Harrison isn't a popular man at the post office, but that's only because he has cleaned them out of priority mailing boxes. But he is popular with war dogs, who have never, and most likely will never meet the man who's made their life a little easier, if only for a little while.

“I grew up with dogs,” said Harrison, “I’ve been around dogs my whole life. Big dogs, small dogs. I was thinking that there are dogs over there that are playing with some of the stuff we sent over. If it gives them some kind of relaxation or fun coming off a mission, it’s worthwhile to feel that.”

The goal for the project is to collect care packages for the next few weeks and continue to ship them out all through August. As the units change every few months, it's important for Harrison to get the care packages over in a timely manner.

“I wasn’t sure what to think,” said Harrison. “This was a very person, individual thing. I was trying to do it and then it has blown up from there and got to this bigger program.”

Harrison knows it’s not easy overseas. While many of the soldiers have families that send care packages and things they need, the Florida businessman wanted to do his part to help the dogs that are helping to protect the very freedom that he enjoys every day.

“From the comments, they were excited,” said Harrison. “Just a small tennis ball, they said the dogs loved it. So much more than the more expensive dog toys.”

From the sounds of things, these dogs give Harrison’s idea two paws up.

There are many ways to help. Toys can be dropped off directly to Harrison, or for more ideas visit AnySoldier.com For information on Operation Furry Soldiers, visit OperationFurrySoldiers.org

Keep in mind there are restrictions. Hard Frisbees are discouraged because they could hurt the dogs teeth. Also, dogs cannot have treats due to veterinary restrictions. But they do love their tennis balls.

The first time I heard of the Black Dog Syndrome what when we got the Rotts-They told me it is difficult to find homes for them and stated the same reason, you can't see their features as well.
This make no sense to me. I adore black Labs, I would adopt one in a heartbeat. I agree, since this event was already planned and they felt they needed to cancel it, which i think is dumb. Who would it offend ? People should not be offended by having an event featuring a color of dog ! Why couldn't they just postpone and not have to start the killing process.
We have to many stereotypes already. Pitt Bulls, Rottweilers, Black Dog Syndrome,German Shepherd and who knows how many others. Why can't there just be dogs period. Perhaps some are bad so to speak but this could be due to the breeding process of some puppy mills who do not breed correctly and the outcome is an unstable pet. If this unstable pet is placed in the home of someone unfamiliar with the breed there will be problems. I think stricter legislation on breeders would be welcome. Higher penalty on pet offenders, those who breed, raise and abuse animals.
I believe sites such as this are raising the awareness of abuse of animals since so many of us have rescued, belong to a rescue group, volunteer in a shelters or have adopted a pet from either a shelter or rescue.

Nothing bad was intended here. I am glad though that it got the animals more publicity. I have had many black cats and they were all wonderful. I didn't even give their color a second thought.

Gee whiz, the NAACP needs to get a grip. This was an honest, heartfelt attempt to give black animals a better chance of being adopted. I don't understand the "syndrome" where black cats & dogs are hard to adopt out. My last two dogs were/are black. I rescued a black cat. I had never heard of this before reading about it on zootoo. It just blows me away that people would judge an animal because of their color. They have the same good souls as do animals of other colors. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Sometimes we go overboard with getting offended by things. This had nothing to do with people of color and I just can't imagine why anyone would be offended.

i agree! what's the old saying...sticks and stones.....? i'm not saying that there aren't cases where the spoken/written word is not offensive, but really....black is beautiful....how is that offensive?

sorry, but the NAACP needs to get a life instead of harassing innocent animals.

This is so sad! These poor animals, just as humans, have no say about their color. Beauty comes from inside. I wish we could all realize that.

I have never heard of the Black Dog Syndrome. I actually prefer black dogs and cats. I don't think the promotion should have been pulled. It's unfortunate about the timing. Since the pulling of the promotion caught attention, then I guess they accomplished what was needed.

The syndrome applies to cats as well. Comments have been made that due to their color their features are not as distinguishable as other colors and they tend to "blend in" to the shelter setting. And don't forget about superstition.

This is true! Too many "weirdo's" to take a chance on it. I know if I adopted out a black animal around Halloween and then found out it was to some "cult" and had been used in a "sacrifice" I would be sick and heartbroken over it! Shame that things need to be done that way!

I can see why some would consider it in poor taste to run the Black is Beautiful campaign coinciding with Juneteenth, and the timing is unfortunate. But the sentiment is so wonderful and positive, and I'm glad the shelter is still offering the discounts. One of my two dogs is black, and she had been in the shelter for months. The woman working there thanked us for taking her because they have trouble adopting out black dogs. The dog is sweet, gentle, smart, well adjusted, and not at all aggressive. Our flashier, spotted dog is the one who's scared of strangers. Anyway, I hope that the attention that the CANCELING of this promotion gets will be as good for business as the promotion itself would have been.

I think it's rediculous to compare one with the other. Why not consider it a privilage that we are getting the black animals adopted out @ the same time as the "holiday". Anytime we can help poor defenseless animals is a good time!!!!!!!! Personally I dont see were the problem is. States have two different things going on at the same time all the time. I think it's a little selfish of whoever is complaining.

Get real... Black is beautiful (as is any other hue), especially in a pet. Leave it to some group to not see the larger issue of needless euthanasia than their own political agenda.

All of us here at zootoo are animal lovers and probably don't see how comparing our furry friends to a group of people can be insulting. But it is... to them. If we expect people to be more compassionate to animals then we also need to be more compassionate and understanding of our fellow humans. The fact is that racism still exists even in it's smaller forms. Comparing a group of humans (any group) to animals that are seen or stereotyped as undesirable, caged, unwanted, without freewill is insulting. It suggests that they are beneath or less than another group. Many who are not African-American do not realize the importance of this holiday. I understand that so many here have or have had black animals but that is just it - animals. It is comparing people to animals. It suggests that they are non-human which is where racism began in the first place. Non-human was equated to non-white. Please try to understand how this must feel. This is a very touchy subject in this country but I feel it is at the core of many of our problems. However, it we can't get past problems within our own species, how can we do any good for the rest of the living creatures in the world. To move on we must try to understand and realize other's realities and point-of-views. Please please try to understand. This stopped being about just trying to get animals adopted once a slogan used for empowerment for African-Americans was adopted. By the way, I'll go ahead and apologize if anyone finds this insulting.

Thanks for being one of the only comments here to have some common sense and compasion towards PEOPLE. I love animals. I have 7 furry pets in my home. They are a part of my family, but I am still able to realize that people are still more important. I am a little tired of the people here who complain that we should all do ANYTHING for animals, even if it means harming or offending other people. Animals can be helped without offending people.

I just heard about "Black Dog Syndrome" for the first time recently so it's weird that this story came out now. It's unfortunate that they had to stop the marketing aspect but obviously people all over the country are reading about this and talking about it, so maybe now even MORE people will adopt black dogs and cats than before, and not just from that shelter. They say, there's no such thing as bad publicity, right?

So, black can'be be beautiful on certain days. Hmm. Me thinks we have taken being "PC" a bit too far when the welfare of the animals is overlooked so we don't offend someone.

I'm surprised that black dogs and cats are harder to find homes for. I have two black cats, had a black dog as a kid and two other black cats. I always thought black cats and dogs were beautiful, and I know many other pet owners that have black dogs and cats who feel the same way. At any rate the promotions timing was unfortunate, and I hope the shelter finds homes for all of the pets.

I think that people take policital "correctness" too far and to such asinine extremes that no one can say ANYTHING without SOMEONE being offended. Would there have been the same public outcry if it was large breed dogs and their campaign was, "Big is beautiful?" Or if the animals were primarily white in color because people didn't want to adopt animals that would look dirty all the time if they were playing outside, or something? "White is beautiful..." How this solgan was deemed inapproriate to coincide with a holiday celebrating the fact that slaves were freed is beyond me. I don't care if people call me white. I'm pale as a ghost! I have a friend who doesn't care if you refer to her as black. But I have another friend who takes offense to being described as black because her skin is brown, not super dark like some people. Who cares what color you are? Why should anyone discriminate animals by color? No one should discriminate people by color, they shouldn't do it to animals either. And just for coincidence sake, I have experienced that white cats are meaner than black ones. But it's nothing really to do with the pigment in their fur. It's just a coincidence! I love my black cats. But I do take extra care to keep them shut away on Halloween...

"Black is Beautiful." Isn't that a slogan that the black community started years ago? Why should anyone consider it offensive just because it's applied to animals.

I've never understood why people were less attracted to black dogs and cats. If their fur is shiny it gleams and is very beautiful. I do agree with some of the comments written by others that some of their facial features tend to "disappear" if the lighting isn't good. I've had that problem when I was trying to take pictures of a black Cocker Spaniel we had fostered. Luckily he wound up with a wonderful couple.

I agree, ridiculous. This is not offensive in anyway and I bet 95% of American have never heard of this 'holiday', I think the slogan is catchy and cute. Someone just wanted to cause a stir and prove that they were politically correct, taking the lives of dogs and cats in the end.

I see no reason for anyone to be offended by "black is beautiful" at all. Heavens, maybe both should be celebrated together and we could raise awareness for shelter pets AND celebrate the freedom of slaves!

I really have to wonder if they even knew what the "black is beautiful" campaign was about? It sounds like the complaint was made without even trying to contact the shelter to ask about it.

I'm glad the shelter is having a good turn-out anyway!

I never really knew that people were not as willing to adopt a black dog until I adopted mine. The thought never crossed my mind, frankly. A local shelter where I live has promos for black animals too - I think it must work. I can't comment about the controversy here except to say that I wish people would realize that we are talking about something different and just go with it!

I think it would be less controversial if they took sayings from the fashion world rather than history or someone's cultural background. They could run a black is back fashion show and get a pet store to sponsor it. Black dogs are great at showing off brightly colored items because it stands out on them. They could show of leashes, collars, clothes and such. It could bring a lot of attention without the controversy. That being said, it sounds like the controversy got them some free publicity anyway.

I agree that it was going overboard for anyone to file a complaint against the shelter for using a positive message like "Black is Beautiful" for such a positive purpose...saving animals! I think the groups that filed the complaints should have instead embraced the shelter promotion and incorporated it into their Juneteenth celebrations inviting the shelter to have animals up for adoption at their celebrations. It could have turned into a beautiful community partnership if people weren't so quick to judge the shelter's efforts as offensive.

The partnership idea is a great thought!

Oh brother! It really was just bad timing for the promotion. That's all it was. I pray that all the black animals that need to be adopted find wonderful forever homes. I hope this shelter considers using this campaign another time of year in the future when they have alot of black animals in need of homes. It makes the community aware of the problems of "black dog" syndrom & in this case black cats as well. The black community should appreciate that the shelter is trying to fight against the prejudice of the animals in question!

For anyone that has ever been under discrimination before should realize that a campaign to help stop it is a wonderful thing! I would think that this would be supported by everyone to try to help animals lives' get saved. People are judged and animals are judged just the same! More people should be trying to stop this judgement. I hope that they are able to get all of their black dogs and cats homes! I want a black cat, and I will definitely be adopting one in the future. I already have an orange tabby, which they are overlooked as well, and he is the best kitty ever!

The shelter was wrong to pull this campaign. People and organizations will always find something wrong with whatever is done - no matter how innocent it is and no matter how it will help. It is time that we do what we feel is right - not what someone else tells us is wrong! The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People should be ashamed of themselves and focus on more relevant issues!

I can't say I understand why the campaign was offensive, but at least the news coverage got the shelter some attention--and some adoptions. My daughter has a black cat and a tuxedo cat that she took home from the rescue she volunteers for because they were such great personalities and she was told they might not ever get adopted because of their color. I had never heard of this bias until then--and have had a series of tuxedo cats over the years who were wonderful friends.

Ah, yes, as the world turns today......I think if you saw this campaign as racist YOU are racist. This is absolutely ridiculous. There are far more important things out there, people, than the fact that this ad campaign might offend someone. What a load of manure. Forget about the fact this shelter is over run with black dogs and cats. The most important thing is the wording.
I have a black dog and I just took her. Never thought about her color. My other dog was black also. It just turned out that way.
I have a black rescue cat that has more personality than most people I know. I had heard about black animals being euthanized so I just kept her. She is a joy to be around and makes me laugh each and every day.
I think people who have nothing better to do than this mindless crap should be made to help out some animals. At least do one thing good with their life while on this earth. Give me a break..................
