Biden to Now Adopt a Shelter Dog

Browse News

NEW YORK -- Animal activists may soon let Vice President-elect Joe Biden out of the dog house.

The Delaware senator will, after all, acquire a new family dog from an animal shelter, he said in an interview with ABC's George Stephanopoulous, which aired Sunday morning.

The unnamed German Shepherd puppy, which he purchased from a Pennsylvania commercial breeder two weeks ago, will still join the senator's family -- Biden just thought that the pup could use a friend.

"We've always had two dogs," Biden told the ABC news host. "And we've always had two big dogs and so they can have companionships."

Biden did not specifically address the ire that followed his purchase -- and not adoption -- of the 6-week old German Shepherd male. The move prompted public condemnation from various animal welfare advocates and organizations, including PETA and the Humane Society of the United States.

But Biden did explain the reasoning behind his choice of breed.

"And I've had German Shepherds ... from the time I was a kid. And I've actually trained them and shown them in the past," he said. "So I wanted a German Shepherd, and we're going to get a pound dog that my wife wants."

Despite his recent purchase, Biden had always planned on also getting a dog from a shelter, his spokeswoman, Elizabeth Alexander, told The Delware News Journal.

"When the Bidens have had other dogs in the past, they've gotten two so they could play with each other," Alexander said. "As he mentioned, they are in the process of looking for the second dog from a rescue shelter, which was always the plan."

Alexander also said Biden's interest in a shelter was not influenced by the criticism he met when he purchased the dog from Jolindy's German Shepherds, in Spring City, Pa., on Dec. 6.

The facility received several maintenance and record violation citations four days after Biden purchased the puppy, sparking some speculation of puppy mill conditions.

The owner of Jolindy's German Shepherds, Linda Brown, wholly refuted the allegations, telling Pet Pulse last week, "I run a clean facility. When you sell a dog to the Vice President [-elect], you have everybody exaggerating everything."

Though she has a license to breed and sell 250 or more dogs in a given year, Pennsylvania's Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement reported 87 dogs on the property at the time of the routine December inspection.

Biden's shelter promise may help him regain the approval of organizations that were miffed by the kennel's citations -- and the senator' decision to even go there, in the first place.

"It's so important that high-profile elected officials like the vice president set an example and demonstrate that the best source for dogs is your local animal shelter," HSUS President Wayne Pacelli told The Philadelphia Inquirer. "We are very grateful to the Vice President-elect for making the humane choice."

In honor of "this good news," PETA is planning to give Biden a basket with spay certificates, treats and toys. It has also promised to send a $500 gift bag of supplies to Biden's shelter of choice.

"Thanks go out to VP-elect Biden for raising the issue of the companion animal overpopulation crisis in this country," PETA President Ingrid Newkirk was quoted as saying in a Monday morning PETA blog post.

It is unclear when Biden and his family will adopt the dog, who will also have a new feline friend in the Vice President-elect's Delaware home. The senator already has a "pound cat," he told Stephanopoulous.

Biden said he will learn the name of the dog on Christmas morning, when his young granddaughters will reportedly announce the name of the dog that will likely receive nothing short of presidential treatment at No. 1 Observatory Circle.

It shouldn't matter where he gets the dog from, just that he gives it a good home. The media needs to leave people alone and let them enjoy their personal lives. No one cares where I got my animals from.

The public can apply a lot of pressure. Joe must have someone to look after these dogs when he is away from home alot.

I think it's none of anyone's business whether he has a dog or not. And where he gets it? Please. It's good he's getting a shelter dog. It sounds like he has the know how to train it. Not everyone does. No one has any right to push their beliefs on others. So many people do it-their way is the only way. I do support shelters, don't get me wrong. I've fostered for a breed rescue in the past. The best thing you can do is set a good example. Being pushy just makes you look like a lunatic. I got my first Aussie from a breeder, and he's the highest quality dog I own. I know his parentage, and that's a big thing!

Awesome! Go shelter dogs! Now if we can only get some more legislation in place to help them out and really prevent animal cruelty.

Good deal, there are people out there that like certain breeds of dogs and that is all they will have, I don't condone the man for buying from a breeder but it is great he will find a playmate from a shelter. Personally I think the shelter dog will be a far more better pet.

I repeat ! How would you like it if someone told you who and where to get a dog from ? The man obviously likes dogs, has had them in the past, knows how to take care of them and certainly has much more important issues to address starting in 2009. (How would you like to have to face the mess that our current administration has left for the new guys to deal with ?) Does this mean that everyone that works for Obama and Biden now have to adopt shelter pets ? Why not tell all polititians that they must adopt ! This whole issue is rediculous ! Get a life !

Its his choice. Period. Am I glad he's also adding a shelter dog to the family? Absolutely! But ultimately, this is his families choice.

It is unfortunate that so many people think that if you don't adopt from a shelter or rescue group you are being inhumane. These people need to learn more about responsible breeding and it's many, many benefits. Of course I don't want people to stop supporting shelters but to stop criticizing something they know little about. Many of the dogs in shelters have "issues" and not everyone can cope with them. Does that mean they shouldn't hvae a dog? Give me a break. P.S. I only have shelter dogs because I do have the time and knowledge to deal with an animal that requires more than the average amount of attention.

I'm going to stick with my original opinion, let people make their own choices. I'm sure "we" didn't force him to get a shelter dog. If we have that power, think what we could do!

I'm glad that Biden is also getting a shelter dog, but I hope he's not just doing it because he was "shamed" into it. He had every right to purchase a purebred dog and no one should have slammed him for that.

Now is everybody happy? Such a stink was made about him buying a dog that the thought of having two dogs never crossed anyone's minds.

I'm glad he is getting more than one and that he already has a cat from a pound.

Guess we can really make a difference, with all our comments and complaints. Can't help but wonder if he did indeed intend to adopt from a shelter also, all along. Or is that just his politically correct solution to the outpouring of slams from all of us?? Either way, happy ending

This is America...I do believe one has the right to choose their pet whether it be from a breeder or a shelter. HOWEVER, if those of us who support saving lives don't educate others and market our shelter friends....the puppy mills, pet stores and breeders will forever win and our homeless friends will DIE! Thank you Mr Biden for choosing a shelter dog and cat as part of your family.

I think it's nice for your dog to have a companion friend.Rescuing a Shelter Dog is a wonderful way to do that.
Just wondering though,Was this his plan from Day 1,or did Public Outcry push him into a very tight corner, and he's now trying to make every body happy?
It is really amazing seeing the press that this story received.I thought it quite ridiculous.

I think waaaaaaaaay too much press has been given to this story. Leave the poor man alone. Owning a dog is a personal choice.....and the choice of dog is personal, too.....not something that should be dictated by others. I'm sure a lot of other 'high-profile' personalities own "pure-bred'" or "designer" dogs. It's really no one's business.

I wasn't too upset by him buying a dog, as long as it was from a good breeder and not PetLand. Adoption is always the better way to go, and it is great that he is making up for some lost ground with the public by following a family tradition of having two dogs.
