Biden to Now Adopt a Shelter Dog

Browse News

NEW YORK -- Animal activists may soon let Vice President-elect Joe Biden out of the dog house.

The Delaware senator will, after all, acquire a new family dog from an animal shelter, he said in an interview with ABC's George Stephanopoulous, which aired Sunday morning.

The unnamed German Shepherd puppy, which he purchased from a Pennsylvania commercial breeder two weeks ago, will still join the senator's family -- Biden just thought that the pup could use a friend.

"We've always had two dogs," Biden told the ABC news host. "And we've always had two big dogs and so they can have companionships."

Biden did not specifically address the ire that followed his purchase -- and not adoption -- of the 6-week old German Shepherd male. The move prompted public condemnation from various animal welfare advocates and organizations, including PETA and the Humane Society of the United States.

But Biden did explain the reasoning behind his choice of breed.

"And I've had German Shepherds ... from the time I was a kid. And I've actually trained them and shown them in the past," he said. "So I wanted a German Shepherd, and we're going to get a pound dog that my wife wants."

Despite his recent purchase, Biden had always planned on also getting a dog from a shelter, his spokeswoman, Elizabeth Alexander, told The Delware News Journal.

"When the Bidens have had other dogs in the past, they've gotten two so they could play with each other," Alexander said. "As he mentioned, they are in the process of looking for the second dog from a rescue shelter, which was always the plan."

Alexander also said Biden's interest in a shelter was not influenced by the criticism he met when he purchased the dog from Jolindy's German Shepherds, in Spring City, Pa., on Dec. 6.

The facility received several maintenance and record violation citations four days after Biden purchased the puppy, sparking some speculation of puppy mill conditions.

The owner of Jolindy's German Shepherds, Linda Brown, wholly refuted the allegations, telling Pet Pulse last week, "I run a clean facility. When you sell a dog to the Vice President [-elect], you have everybody exaggerating everything."

Though she has a license to breed and sell 250 or more dogs in a given year, Pennsylvania's Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement reported 87 dogs on the property at the time of the routine December inspection.

Biden's shelter promise may help him regain the approval of organizations that were miffed by the kennel's citations -- and the senator' decision to even go there, in the first place.

"It's so important that high-profile elected officials like the vice president set an example and demonstrate that the best source for dogs is your local animal shelter," HSUS President Wayne Pacelli told The Philadelphia Inquirer. "We are very grateful to the Vice President-elect for making the humane choice."

In honor of "this good news," PETA is planning to give Biden a basket with spay certificates, treats and toys. It has also promised to send a $500 gift bag of supplies to Biden's shelter of choice.

"Thanks go out to VP-elect Biden for raising the issue of the companion animal overpopulation crisis in this country," PETA President Ingrid Newkirk was quoted as saying in a Monday morning PETA blog post.

It is unclear when Biden and his family will adopt the dog, who will also have a new feline friend in the Vice President-elect's Delaware home. The senator already has a "pound cat," he told Stephanopoulous.

Biden said he will learn the name of the dog on Christmas morning, when his young granddaughters will reportedly announce the name of the dog that will likely receive nothing short of presidential treatment at No. 1 Observatory Circle.

If PA law states that a dog can not be sold until 7 weeks, perhaps Biden did not pay for the dog until that time. After all, I read he will not take posession of the dog til he enters the White House.

I hope the Biden family had a very enjoyable holiday with the pups, no matter where they came from. The dogs are now family!

They just had a big 'to do' on the news about the German Shepherd that he purchased. Hope they do the same for the shelter dog.

No matter what this man does he will be under the magnifying glass continuously. He can not please everyone. Now that he is the elected official maybe he will do more once he sees all the shelter animals that are available. Or maybe his wife will!

I find it interesting that the article is stating that he bought this puppy at six weeks of age, from a commercial kennel in PA. (Glorified puppy mill????) The law in PA states that the animal can not be sold until 7 weeks old (still to young in my opinion). Hmmm - wonder if that is one of the violations this kennel got???
I do hope he follows through and adopts a shelter animal.

We need to educate the White House - shelter dogs are not "pound" - "mutts". They are simply dogs that some else couldn't or wouldn't love enough to keep them! They are dogs that were born in spontaneous backyard births from people that didn't get their dogs spayed or neutered! They were the unfortunate fall-out of the Bush administration that destroyed the American economy. They are to most merely collateral damage.
If we could get our politicians to use more positive language when describing shelter animals - perhaps more would get adopted! We need to educate, educate, educate and, spay and neuter, spay and neuter, spay and neuter!

i believe we should all have the right to get a pup from wherever we want but a man in the position of mr biden could have so much influence and put shelters in the spot light for people who still don't know they exist. i hope he comes through and his second dog does come from a shelter

I know that in a perfect world every animal would simply have a home, but I wonder a little about the bitterness that is expressed toward someone when they buy instead of adopt.

Of course I am for adopting before buying, but if you love all animals, don't pure bred dogs and puppies deserve a good home, too. Some day hopefully, the demand for pets will exceed the supply and all animals will have homes. But supply and demand is in the hands of the kennel clubs and breeders, not necessarily the buyers.

It just bothers me a little to think what would happen to animals at a breeders or pet store if no one did buy them. Hate the industry all day long, but don't begrudge an innocent animal who never asked to be born, a home just because it is a pure bred dog.

I am very glad to hear that his next will be a shelter dog.

If people continued to buy from pet stores and wholesale breeders it just encourages the puppy mills to continue cranking out puppies just for the money. If the market dries up they will go out of business eventually. Hopefully, the puppies they don't sell when their business goes under will go to shelters and find homes that way. There really is no other way, it's the law of supply and demand.

I don't have a problem with responsible breeders, the ones who do it for the enjoyment and improvement of the breed. They will screen buyers of their pups and do everything possible to make sure they go to good homes. How many petstores do that?

It is nice to see that two dogs will have a new home. It would be nice if more people would adopt their pets from a shelter though. It would help a lot of great animals!

Anytime a pet is adopted it is a good thing. Let's hope that he is adopting a dog because he has thought about how it will fit into his life, who will be responsible for it, who will love , feed and train it. This is a huge responsibility. Let's hope it wasn't a political tactic.

It seems that this adoption is to appease public opinion. I suppose it's better than being in a shelter, but if he hadn't wasted money buying a purebred in the first place, he could have had two shelter animals.

I'm just glad two dogs got a good home. Why is it our business anyway? I'm glad he is getting a shelter dog too but he got a good dog from someone who raises them and it is the dog he wanted so I think it is his choice. A shelter dog will be nice too. Sounds like that is what they have done in the past anyway, one German Shepard and one shelter dog it's just now a big deal since he is in the public eye.

You can't down a guy for buying from a breeder. If the guy has shown German Shepards in the past, then why down him for wanting a pure bred animal descended from show-quality dogs? Nothing inherently wrong with any of this. Tear down Biden for not adopting a shelter dog, then you may as well tear down the whole ridiculous dog show culture.

(I would tear down the ridiculous dog show world.) I don't mind that he bought a dog from a breeder, but he should have gone to a responsible breeder. Nobody who has 80+ dogs qualifies as responsible, show dogs or not. There's nothing wrong with wanting a purebred with good bloodlines, it's where he got it that's disgusting.

Groan.... Yes, definitely politically correct. Is he really doing it to help the cause? I strongly doubt it. Yes it is his right to adopt what and where he wants. If he wanted to use his right, he should have kept his mouth closed about adopting from a shelter. His open mouth made it our business.
