Biden to Now Adopt a Shelter Dog

Browse News

NEW YORK -- Animal activists may soon let Vice President-elect Joe Biden out of the dog house.

The Delaware senator will, after all, acquire a new family dog from an animal shelter, he said in an interview with ABC's George Stephanopoulous, which aired Sunday morning.

The unnamed German Shepherd puppy, which he purchased from a Pennsylvania commercial breeder two weeks ago, will still join the senator's family -- Biden just thought that the pup could use a friend.

"We've always had two dogs," Biden told the ABC news host. "And we've always had two big dogs and so they can have companionships."

Biden did not specifically address the ire that followed his purchase -- and not adoption -- of the 6-week old German Shepherd male. The move prompted public condemnation from various animal welfare advocates and organizations, including PETA and the Humane Society of the United States.

But Biden did explain the reasoning behind his choice of breed.

"And I've had German Shepherds ... from the time I was a kid. And I've actually trained them and shown them in the past," he said. "So I wanted a German Shepherd, and we're going to get a pound dog that my wife wants."

Despite his recent purchase, Biden had always planned on also getting a dog from a shelter, his spokeswoman, Elizabeth Alexander, told The Delware News Journal.

"When the Bidens have had other dogs in the past, they've gotten two so they could play with each other," Alexander said. "As he mentioned, they are in the process of looking for the second dog from a rescue shelter, which was always the plan."

Alexander also said Biden's interest in a shelter was not influenced by the criticism he met when he purchased the dog from Jolindy's German Shepherds, in Spring City, Pa., on Dec. 6.

The facility received several maintenance and record violation citations four days after Biden purchased the puppy, sparking some speculation of puppy mill conditions.

The owner of Jolindy's German Shepherds, Linda Brown, wholly refuted the allegations, telling Pet Pulse last week, "I run a clean facility. When you sell a dog to the Vice President [-elect], you have everybody exaggerating everything."

Though she has a license to breed and sell 250 or more dogs in a given year, Pennsylvania's Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement reported 87 dogs on the property at the time of the routine December inspection.

Biden's shelter promise may help him regain the approval of organizations that were miffed by the kennel's citations -- and the senator' decision to even go there, in the first place.

"It's so important that high-profile elected officials like the vice president set an example and demonstrate that the best source for dogs is your local animal shelter," HSUS President Wayne Pacelli told The Philadelphia Inquirer. "We are very grateful to the Vice President-elect for making the humane choice."

In honor of "this good news," PETA is planning to give Biden a basket with spay certificates, treats and toys. It has also promised to send a $500 gift bag of supplies to Biden's shelter of choice.

"Thanks go out to VP-elect Biden for raising the issue of the companion animal overpopulation crisis in this country," PETA President Ingrid Newkirk was quoted as saying in a Monday morning PETA blog post.

It is unclear when Biden and his family will adopt the dog, who will also have a new feline friend in the Vice President-elect's Delaware home. The senator already has a "pound cat," he told Stephanopoulous.

Biden said he will learn the name of the dog on Christmas morning, when his young granddaughters will reportedly announce the name of the dog that will likely receive nothing short of presidential treatment at No. 1 Observatory Circle.

No offense, but political people and their spokes people ALWAYS have a "reason" for everything. No one ever just admits that the original plan had to be "changed" because the public didn't approve. I hope he really adopts a shelter dog. God knows he has more than enough money to adopt AND donate a bit at the same time!

I hope he wasn't just making the whole "we planned this all along" story up. And calling them pound dogs and cats, well, whatever. I am truly glad he is adopting now. He should have to begin with. It's not like you can't find a shepherd in a "pound".

On one hand its a shame he supported a bad breeder but on the other hand he rescued this dog AND brought media attention on this breeder. Maybe he'll have to shut down or clean up his act. Hopefully the former. Go for shelters!

I'm glad two dogs will have a good life. I purchased both of my dogs from breeders, for concerns about my ability to be a proper "mom" to a shelter dog. Now that I have more ownership and responsibility experience I will be rescuing dogs in the future. I think anyone who will bring an animal into their home should be commended and encouraged to make good choices. I think adopting a second dog to keep the first one company is a good move.

Yes, everyone has the right to choose. It's not right to judge. Of course, I prefer adoption for myself.

"As he mentioned, they are in the process of looking for the second dog from a rescue shelter, which was always the plan."

The plan was to support a puppymill first (and take away a dog from his mom way, way too early) AND save a rescue dog next? The second half of the plan is okay with me. The first is a little messed up... :/

Some breeds are not available in shelters, or go so fast that the average person can't get the breed they want. Some people want purebreds or more pure if possible (and not talking breeding here) and those also are not always available or provable in shelters. Personally, I want a doberman.. but I am also VERY leery of adopting one even from a breed rescue as the history of the dog is not known. There are some breeds (in my opinion) that I would only trust around my kids when I have raised them from puppies myself.. doberman in this case - I am fine getting one for a big or a small breeder or from a rescue as long as the dog is a puppy.. NO issue adopting older dogs from other breeds... just depends on the breed.

I think people have the right to get their animals from anyplace they choose as long as they have educated themselves about all the possibilities and don't steal a dog. I have full confidence that VP Biden knew he was going to catch flack for not adopting...I can see why people may be upset, but how is giving someone a hard time from not adopting going to improve their feelings about adoption? If he was always going to adopt the second dog then thats great but guilting him into it is wrong! As long as he neuters his dog that's all I care about. He is limiting the pet population by being responsible!! I saw a note where the person condemned Biden for paying for a pure-bred but then said they get their animals from friends that have litters...how is accepting that your friend will not spay/neuter better than what Biden did? Either way the animals that are not adopted or purchased from either the breeders or lazy pet owners (that don't spay) are brought to shelters. I know I work at one and see it everytime.

AMEN.. supporting "backyard breeders" to me is actually worse than going to a reputable breeder. It tells them that it is OKAY to keep letting their mutt get pregnant and not be responsible for the outcome (aka lots of unwanted puppies)..

If Biden likes German Shepherds so much he could have gone to a German Shepherd Rescue to get one, I usually go to a shelter for my pets, but the year I got my dog there were no puppies in three countries when I was looking, I got a Cocker Spaniel and over paid, no papers......glad that Biden is going to the shelter to get a dogmate for his Shepherd. Hope our Prez goes too.

I have never understood people paying high prices for pure-bred anything. We have always gotten animals from the shelter or friends who had puppies or kittens to give away.

Getting a pet from a shelter doesn't mean you can't get a purebred. There are all types of animals at shelters. Abuse, neglect and homelessness know no certain breed. Of course you won't get the paperwork with the pet but if you are only getting it to be a pet and don't plan on showing or breeding, you don't need to show lineage. I am happy to read that Joe Biden is going to a shelter since he is in the public's eye. Perhaps, it will encourage more people to go to a shelter when looking for a pet.

I think everyone has the right to choose which dog they want, whether from a breeder or a shelter. I have always gotten my dogs and cats from shelters but I think mutts make the best pets. Some people believe certain breeds make the best pets. I'm just glad that any dog has a new owner and hope that it gets the attention and love it deserves.

From the first page of a search for "German Shepherd Rescue" there is MidAtlantic German Shepherd Rescue and New England German Shepherd Rescue both listing MANY good quality pure bred GSD's. I realize that with a rescued dog you often do not have their pedigree but unless he intends to show and/or breed there is honestly no need for that. Not to mention how many "reputable" pure breed breeders have been found to either falsify records or not be responsible with testing for genetics much less diseases and you can end up with a pet that you have to put down due to fatal diseases or disorders. I do not buy for a minute that they could not have found his GSD and her shelter dog without resorting to feeding the puppy mill set.

I don't care who you are, some people (including celebs, etc) may not know the rewards if that is what you want to call it from adopting an animal from a shelter or a rescue...
adopting from a private party is costly and you sometimes get taken for a ride with that also....
why not adopt from a place that can do some good, not only for the animal but for the shelter/rescue...
again , i think it is up to the person adopting on what they want to do. i know what i do, and that is a shelter / rescue...

I am for adopting from a shelter, but if he wanted a dog from a particular breeder, that's his choice. No matter how you slice it, two dogs are going to a good home. You never know, the breeder pup may have wound up at a shelter down the road.

it is the persons choice where they want to go for a pet. if they dont buy them from the kennels and breeders they will end up just like the dogs at the humane society. too old and unwanted. if they were in a puppy mill is it not better for someone to buy them and take care of them properly where as shelter dogs are getting the excersize and food and space and care they need? it is a persons choice where to go. They should not be criticized for it.

This is nothing but an attempt to improve Biden's pr. The breeder from whom he got his German Shepherd had been cited for having violations. Biden is now trying to clean up his image by getting a shelter dog. Shame on him for not doing his homework the first time and going to a reputable breeder.
